Meet the GOP's wrecking crew Why did a small group of Southern Republicans turn the auto bailout into a demolition derby? Introducing the senators who hate unions and love foreign cars.

  • The arsenal of freedom

Does America really want to see its manufacturing base disappear? Let's remember that Detroit builds not only cars and trucks, but in times of war, it builds tanks, too. Who knows what the future will bring? Do we want to be without the domestic ability to defend ourselves? Will we rely on foreign-owned factories in the South for our security?

The GOP cares about one thing and one thing only: the wealthy. They hate unions because unions challenge the wealthy. In their hatred for the working man and woman, the GOP betrays its true lack of patriotism. The GOP should rot in hell.

  • Union Hacks need to go

The UAW is crippling the domestic auto makers much like the corruption and "Pay to Play" tactics cripple our politics and economy.Hacks and cronies abound and the real fight is to clean this mess up.The UAW becomes part of the solution or part of the problem.Michigan,Illinois,Massachusetts,New Jersey,New York,California all ripe with mob connections and corruption through its governments. We have congressman stuffing cash in freezers, state legislators stuffing cash in bras.Does Massachusetts have more felon ex speaker of the houses than Illonois have felon governors?Who knows, but all of these eventually are connected to mob ties. The worst of it happens in liberal states where unions are strongest. For us to be competitive we need to eliminate those people and processes that do not directly add value to the product. It is that simple except for all the cronies in phoney positions and money and influence ,most collected from union dues, spent to buy politicians and influence to keep this "national"mob shakedown going. It's time to call it for what it is.The UAW walked away not the Republican Senators, and yes those "foriegn" car companies are building here, employing people here, creating jobs here for americans. The demand for cars will be the same the only differince is the piece of the pie the big three can slice for themselves which will be smaller and smaller until they can compete and produce a superior product. The biggest strain on that is Labor, the Union shaking them down and sucking out potential profits. You cronies didn't think this through when you wrote this article we americans are getting fed up with this elitist, socialist, mob connected crap you spew and try to spin.

  • The GOP wrecking crew

Interesting how the Wall Street bailout was rushed through without being subject to the same scrutiny the automakers are under. I would just like to point out, whenever I hear how the Japanese workers make less, does anyone point out their health insurance is paid by the country they work in? Don't blame the workers, don't make them the scapegoat. And I bet more autoworker sons and daughters are fighting in the middle east than any of these so-called patriotic Senators.

  • It would be cheaper

To give every American $20,000 and then pass a law that only big 3 cars can be insured and registered. Violators will be imprisoned, citizen.

  • Let's get regional

Interesting study in the NY Times today about the most corrupt states. http://www.nytimes.com/2008/12/14/weekinreview/14marsh.html?_r=1&scp=1&sq=most%20corrupt%20states&st=cse

It seems that of the states (not counting DC and the territories) that top the list, the top seven all voted for McCain and it is not until number 8 of the states, that you get to Delaware and number 9, that you get to Florida.

Three is more than regional pride in this, there is regional distinction.

I pose a question. If you were a well qualified senior in high school (and not a star jock strap) and you had your choice of which college to attend, which from among these ten would you choose?

    1. LSU

    2. Alabama

    3. Auburn

    4. South Carolina

    5. Northwestern

    6. Michigan

    7. Oberlin (Ohio).

    8. Rugters

    9. UC, Berkeley

    10. Boston College

(I left out the Ivy League on purpose)

Is it happenstance that the most corrupt states have the least regarded higher education; voted against Obama; and produce union busting Senators?

I am the son of a man who in the thirties was a charter member of a newly organized machinist local (AFL). I was fortunate enough to plow through college and law school on scholarships. But in my family, magazine bibles included Colliers, the Reader's Digest and the American Federationist. One of my uncles was a charter member of Steelworker's local (CIO). Another was employed by a non-union tool and die company. Made for interesting, and loud, arguments at family gatherings.

Shebly, Corker, Demint et al are a dying breed. They are going to destroy the GOP as a national force in Congress. If the next GOP candidate for President doesn't distance himself from these clowns, he will make Alf Landon look like a political genius. Ironically, the bad times may produce the one thing these clowns fear most: a rebirth of the union movement. And its spread to the white collars.

The driving force behind American prosperity has been the ability of the American middle class to both save and spend. Henry Ford discovered that. Pay good wages and you can sell your product.

The GOP clowns have no vision except exploitation and ultimately they will fail. The GOP will become a regional party and that region will ultimately lose until it too sheds them, like a rattle snake sheds its skin. The US is shedding them now. And like the dried skin of the rattle snake, all they will be able to make is noise.

Or maybe the proper analogy is a death rattle.

  • One nation?

Neptunefame, you say "The south cares little about northern 'elites' or unions or any of that mess. Give us jobs! If you want to secede, we'd be all for it. I think the south can do just fine with its beaches, agriculture, and whiskey stills without the dying north."

I seriously doubt you'd do just fine without Northern tourists and consumers.

And you say you don't care if our economy is "dying" while claiming there were no charity donations from us following Katrina, an insult to everyone from north of the Mason-Dixon line who gave countless hours and sent millions to try to help the Gulf Coast.

The Salon article pointed out that it is Southern Republican senators who want to destroy Detroit's auto industry and break the UAW, that's not bias, just a fact.
