Meet the GOP's wrecking crew Why did a small group of Southern Republicans turn the auto bailout into a demolition derby? Introducing the senators who hate unions and love foreign cars.

  • Southern Comfort

Those hillbillies have shown their true colors

    Luckily, they failed

Bush doesn't want the Big 3's death on his 'legacy'

    But, this is a warning

The Republicans will oppose Obama's programs

They'll try to frustrate his efforts and demand pay offs

    DON'T LET THEM

When the new Congress opens, they have to End the Filibuster

It only takes a 50 vote majority to end this obsolete custom

End the filisbuster and you've de-fanged the Republicans

Let Obama get his whole program through, unobstructed

    Abolish the Filibuster

Southern states get more in expenditures than they pay in taxes

Industrial states paye more in taxes than they get in benefits

{ut an END to that nonsense

  • This thread is developing its own internal epicycles of silliness

Just so you know where we really stand: Timbuktom believes Walter Map has been brilliant throughout this auto industry debate, on this thread and others. Timbuktom also believes Elephantman has been pretty good on auto industry stuff, although E-man's constant focus on CAFE standards seems off-topic in this bailout context.

However, Timbuktom is amazed to find himself on the same side as Elephantman, even if it's only on one topic. Timbuk is keeping an open mind, but he worries about many of E-man's other posts on other topics.

Finally, Timbuk wonders why E-man and Walter insist on fighting one another here. Let us keep on educating, and fighting neo-mythical misconceptions.

  • The North Needs to Shut the Fuck Up and Evolve!

I'm a resident of the Midwest and I am sick to death of listening to people in "The North" gripe about the South as a bunch of stupid, inbred rednecks who are dragging this country down. The management of the Big Three, the UAW and Northern politicians have had an incestuous relationship for years and it's reduced the Big Three to a slobbering, inbred mess - exactly the stereotype Northerners have of the Southerners (black AND white) who are going to remain employed while the Rust Belt keeps rusting. Why doesn't this article take John Dingell (DEMOCRAT - Michigan) to task for being the Big Three's Enabler in Chief for years?

And let me just say, the North has NO RIGHT to get on the high horse when it comes to race relations. The most segregated metropolitan region in the world is DETROIT, MI. Slobodan Milsosevic couldn't achieve the kind of ethnic cleansing that went on there, and white flight in Detroit (and countless other Northwern cities) wasn't an example of Jim Crowe, it was an example of CHOICE. See, in the South it was segregation by law. In the North, it was (and still is) segregation by choice. What's worse?

Second, the South and California are the places that understand globalization (which Democrats and Republicans largely defend) and they've found a way to adapt, instead of retreating into partisan and regionalist bickering that's kept the Northeast and Midwest perched on the edge of a cliff. If the U.S. govwernment doesn't show that it's competent and cares about helping the entire country adapt to a globalizing world, the South will simply do its own thing, and it'll do it with civil rights intact because, unlike the North, there's enough blacks in the South to keep some parity with the future.

Who knows? In 50 years, instead of having Mexicans swim across the Rio Grande to find jobs in the USA, you'll have Americans swimming across the Ohio River looking for jobs in the CSA.

  • GOP decline and revival

The only way for the Repubs to regain political power is to clearly define their fundamental principles, and then conceal them. These principles are quite simple: more power to the powerful, more wealth to the wealthy, and absolute contempt for the intelligence of the American voter.

  • The Big 3's Failures Have NOTHING to do with labor costs...

    . NO!

The problems have been--and continue to be--with the "Captains of Industry" running them.

For 40 years, they have been running the companies all-reactively. Little or no innovation to meet the new challenges in transportation; only newness a

    "at the edges."

]They continued to build masive cars weighing thousands of pounds more than necessary, containing engines over-adequate to run these behemoths, The natural result has been a giant waste of irreplaceable natural rersources which will too soon run out, "justifying car" buyers' expenditure of too much $$ for each such outofdate car coming off the assembly line AND making a nasty assured global warming,to boot.

And YOU blame the workers?? BS!

  • Mystery of auto managers versus their own Republicans

In Detroit, all the workers are Democrats, and all the bosses are Republicans. No big revelation, of course... But why are the Southern Republicans and the Washington DC Republicans so hostile now to their brother Republican auto company bosses?

Hard to say. The Detroit Republicans have been very successful in running Detroit, Michigan and Flint, Michigan and many other cities straight into the dirt. I guess that pales in comparison to W. Bush and Cheney running the whole world's ecomony into the the ground, but still...

Why haven't these Detroit Republicans racked up any credibility with the Republicans who run the USA?

  • Elephant man still delusional

    Quote from Elephantman

Lord have mercy, you are one stupid fool. Detroit hasn't lost money because it built platforms like the Yukon/Tahoe, or the Explorer, or the F-150. Detroit isn't bankrupt becuase it builds Corvettes, or Mustangs, or because Chrysler builds the 300. (Barack Obama had a nice 300, I see on ebay. That was before he, wisely, got himself a dandy Ford Hybrid Escape.) Those platforms all make money. I think I should repeat that for rdmcbee, don't you? THOSE PRODUCTS ARE ALL PROFITABLE, YOU DUMASS!

    Quote from Elephantman above

    They were profitable...

What is this mythical scenario you are talking about? Please a link to anything supporting it Elephantman. They were profitable now they aren't. So they need help. They had a profitable European division for some and an unprofitable United States. The European market is fairly small for U.S. big 3 so to claim that the U.S. is one big loss leader speaks volumes about ignorance and the more about the ability to regurgitate talking points.

It means that their business model doesn't work. Part of that is healthcare for retirees and part of that is people stopped buying their cars. You claim its all part of their grand strategy to showcase at a loss in the U.S. and rake in the profits in Europe? Do you even think before you type?

Here is why Korean and Japanese auto makers are profitable. They kicked foreign car makers out of their countries and have national healthcare. Their markets belong to their domestic manufacturers period.

Is any Republican nut-tard going to dispute that? That is the model we should follow as well as mandating fuel standards which for any thinking person the would realize are for imports as well as domestic cars!!!
