Why not get a little revenge--The unions have been stealing money from their members and using it in elections againt republicans.
You really are an utter moron; or a Republican tool/operative/employee/hanger-on, which amounts to the same thing. Find some self respect, sir. Be a human.
UAW workers make about $10/hr more than non-union auto assemblers, according to the very NYT article you cite in claiming the pay difference is "spurious."
Buffoon.
...government oversight of automobile manufacturing is going to be superior to the dumbasses that have been running the big 3 and we have an unlimited money supply with which to fund our rich connection to our fellow Americans. How about our fellow Americans also express some understanding of the direness of the situion and if they choose to remain with the Big 3 automobile manufacturers they accept a paycut? They are, after all, highly compensated individuals--way above average pay rates last I checked.
There is no big difference between North American auto companies and others in:
1. Wages (see shaunnarine's post previous - it's true), 2. Sales (nobody is buying anybody's cars), 3. Quality (look it up!).
The Confederate Senators are promulgating myths. Maybe they believe the myths. That would show that they are stupid. Probably, they are just cynical, and love the spotlight. Or, maybe, they are crazy. They may have an irrational hatred for unions, or for people without Southern accents.
Let the Detroit automakers fail and be restructured into railroad rolling stock companies.
Let the automakers in the South continue on for a few more years, until it becomes painfully clear that the fuel to run personal automobiles has become prohibitively scarce and expensive.
Let the Southern GOP burn up the last of the goodwill, the last of the credibility, the last of any claim they might have had to saving the U.S. economy, and let them bet on a dying horse.
Then let Detroit go back to being the industrial center of America, building vehicles we can actually use in the future.
...an Audi S4. And an angel cried.
And ten dollars is a big difference an hour in labor costs. It's true, Mr. Non-MBA. Look it up :P
And, Beth, how the heck much does your family make? Why do you deserve more or less, whatever, than the auto workers? 100 words or less.
People, one thing:
Most southern parts manufacturers (including those Nissan plants, BMW plants, etc) sell to the Big 3. They go under, the foreign plants in the South will close, too. No car in America is fully "foreign" or "American". They are a mix. Kill the Big 3 and you will really hurt the foreigns.
That's why three Southern Senators are suddenly backtracking, and Bush stepped in. Springhill in Tenn (Corker's state) is going first, GM just announced. Guess where the Big 3 will make sure supplier layoffs will hit?
Top UAW salary is 27, top non-union 24. UAW is not the problem.
When people lose jobs, they get mad. These senators just earned themselves a nasty lesson in one fact: the Big 3 and the foreign automakers are interconnected. You can' t hit one without nailing the others.
It will be more that a "few million jobs lost." Kiss Ohio, Michigan, and Indiana goodbye.
If the middle class has no money, and these jackasses cram down everyone's wages, who do you think will buy these cars? The foreign automakers are not selling cars, either. NO ONE IS.
Destroying more decent paying jobs is the last thing the economy needs.
I never said I deserve more than the auto workers. I also don't work for a company going bankrupt that is asking my fellow Americans to richly connect to me and bail my company out, so I can keep a 29.50 per hour average wage either. I got a cool car though :P
UAW workers make about $10/hr more than non-union auto assemblers, according to the very NYT article you cite in claiming the pay difference is "spurious."
I quibble with the use of "spurious," but I also have to ask why you're remarking on that $10 an hour difference? For Christ's sake, will we all have to be in Old Poor Richard's poorhouse before you're satisfied? I await the revolution where certain so-and-sos meet a certain such-and-such-an-end and meet their maker in such-and-such-a-manner.
Those foreign cars are pretty darn good compared to most of Detroit's gas-guzzling low-grade tech!
working for foriegn companies and their Reps trying to crush American corporations are just two examples of that hatred. As if more were needed.
The American auto industry was bankrupted by its own stockholders, who also sit on gas company boards, and force management to build oil sucking lemons.
We're just spinning our wheels until Obama takes office. I hope he redoes the bailout, gets control of management, and converts the companies to sustainable manufacturing: green cars, mass transit, clean power generation, etc.
Let's see, I don't own a home. I'm in a pretty high taxbracket, so I pay more per dollar earned than most folks. I bust my fucking ass in working around 65 hours per week. My Dad was a blue-collar union guy from the south way back--a yellow dog democrat who trained me up the way I should go. I'm flush with umm...excess/success? I donate to homeless shelters, the aclu, doctors without borders. All my holiday gifts will be given to an adopt a family.
But somewehre in all that I believe in like...freedom of choice. I got laid off in 2001 (last recession) and fought like a damn biotch to get my career restarted and took a 12 buck an hour job at a shitty company for almost a year to make ends meet. It took time to recover from the last economic collapse.
So color me a little...oh, I dunno, not weeping over the hardships of life experienced by the auto workers! Or those who chose to have mortgages they couldnt' pay for! I don't even have a damn house, but you can bet your bottom dollar I'm paying for those who DO. I hope I've exploded some of your preconceptions about someone who would oppose not the automobile bailout per se, although I literally *hate* badly managed companies, but the fact that a bunch of folks would dig in their heels and not understand that many of us sacrifice wages sometimes, that life isn't that damn easy, and that this situation sucks! They can take a damn nominal pay cut when they make way more than average.
But I got an audi s4 so life is just terrific :P
