Is Obama president yet? And who's that other guy in the White House? As George Bush continues his vanishing act, Barack Obama steps into the spotlight, two months early, to calm a jittery nation.

  • In spite of all that might be said about Bush he has kept this country safe after 9/11.

    Anandasubramanian said:

“You probably deserve to be ruled by Bush for 50 long years, until such time you are left penniless on the street with no roof over your head, and can't complain because you will be treated in Gitmo if you do.”

From comment like yours it seems you might deserve the same that happened today in Mumbai, India.

In spite of all that might be said about Bush he has kept this country safe after 9/11.

  • Juan,

Too bad Bush II didn't keep us safe BEFORE 9/11.

  • There are always two sides to every story. Many say it is Clinton’s fault.

He did not kill Osama when he could have done it.

  • Clionton "did not kill Osama when he could have done it."

Despite the Republican's strenuously objecting to the operation as "wag the dog" to distract from the Whitewater investigation, Clinton came a lot closer before 9/11, the CIA hitting a car in bin Laden's convoy with an RPG in 1998, than Bush ever did even after Osama killed 3000 Americans, and despite Bush's bankrupting the US, getting 4000 more Americans killed, killing a hundred thousand or so innocent people who we are supposed to be "saving", destroying the US' reputation and friends, handing most of Iraq over to Iran, and allowing Iran to become a nuclear power in the process.

  • "The Muslims are coming, suckers"

Yes, in a couple of months Obama will put his hand on the Koran and intone "Allahu akhbar" and declare a jihad on Christian America. Oh noes!

  • "Common sense tells me that ‘natural born citizen’ means "

"common sense tells me" is usually not applicable in a court of law. Unfortunately, or fortunately, the concept of "natural born citizen" is never addressed, let alone defined, in US law anywhere else but that mention in the requirements for President. On the contrary, naturalized citizenship is rigorously defined, and Obama does not meet that definition at all. In fact, having been involved in debates regarding the possibility of children adopted from foreign countries to become President, I can assure you that there seems to be a reasonable case to be made that such children fall under the classification of "natural born citizen", since they definitely do not fall under the definition of naturalized citizens, and instead are provided with American birth certificates after they are adopted by American citizens. That being at least up for argument, being born to an American parent abroad who did not reside in the US quite long enough after age of majority would seem to be not the unbeatable objection some seem to think. On the other side of the question, there are those who hold that the definition of "natural born citizen" in fact excludes all children born to American citizens abroad.

So, even if Obama was born in Kenya; and even if his mother did not live in the US the requisite time after her majority; the worst that would lead to is a legal challenge to a definition which has not in the past been enforced in the most restrictive definitions possible.

Of course, that's what the rightwing extremists are after; if they could get Obama disqualified that would be a nice but unexpected Christmas present for them, but the real tactic is to hamstring the legally elected President of the US with an endless string of legal harassment, as seen in the Clinton presidency, in the belief that although me may be legally elected, he can't possibly be legitimate. The converse being the Bush "victory" in 2000. In the minds of these people, anybody who doesn't buy into their tribal dogma is not a "real" American, and any President who wasn't selected by them isn't legitimate. Of course, if this attitude isn't so intuitively obviously correct to you that you need to have it spelled out like this, you Hate America.

  • @Juan Enrique

Not only was that a cheap shot, but also typical of a Bushiite supporter. Throw mud on whomever speaks the facts, attack the person rather than the idea...

    Nothing surprises me anymore.

But don't worry, you will get Palin in 2012. Then you racists can dance to your hearts content about electing a ditzy blonde to the highest office of your country, plus you get a chance to play with her while she pushes you into your grave.

Oh BTW, The Towers were attacked under Bush's watch. Or are you going to claim Clinton was the president on 9/11?

  • Ever talked to a lib? Or the wall?

Sarah will lead us out of it in four years. I promise. And Gitmo will be gone with the dear prisoners walking our streets as the Constitution is used for toilet paper.

  • No birth certificate or medical records

But why should we demand any shred of legitimacy...right?

  • terkoy

Sarah will lead us out of it in four years.

No doubt using the skills she learned by leading the Republican party off a cliff.

Perhaps she'll learn how to speak in complete sentences by then. That's a big if. Most people with that condition only get worse.

Of course she'll run again. She needs the clothes. But if you pubs want to win you're going to have to stop running gag candidates and criminals.

  • Juan Enrique

In spite of all that might be said about Bush he has kept this country safe after 9/11.

You're really hoping nobody mentions New Orleans, aren't you?

What about before 9/11? Can you name one thing Bush did to try to prevent the 9/11 attacks?

    Anything?

    Anything at all?

Oh, please, he must have done something.

    Didn't he even try?

  • terkoy

I'm getting more jittery as Obama gets closer to the White House

All Bushite criminals say that. Maybe you should beg Dubya for a pardon.

  • Keep an eye on W, he's still dangerous

All this speculation and arguing about the constitution is good fun, and will keep the responses coming. And it makes the headlines. But W and the machinery behind him are still focused on their goals. What can still be done quietly doesn't quite hit the headlines - maybe an article in the middle of the NYT or on NPR at some odd hour.

e.g.: Quietly changing the rules on emissions from coal-fired plants. Embedding GOP faithful into the permanent civil service structure where they can't be dismissed (easily).

I'm sure there is more quiet work going on - some nice contracts to Halliburton? anti-piracy work for Blackwater? The pardons list?.

And of course the obvious transfer of a bunch of taxpayer money (My money! - and yours) to Poulson's friends. All that money gone, no change in outlook, and no relief for any homeowner. Oh yes, W and friends are definitely still in charge.
