Doesn't even exist. The Constitution makes no mention of it (but God forbid that a Democrat do something outside the Constitution -- that's different). But if that's the worst the new guy can do, then I'm ok with it -- I just hope his arrogance and pomposity keeps him strong during those long lonely days and nights while he struggles from getting in over his head...
I was reflecting the other day about what a fast transition really is. In mid 90's, when the power transferred from Tory's to Labour party in he UK, (the night Labour had a landslide victory), John Major had to have his bags packed by mid day the next day, and Tony Blair moved in soon after noon the next day, and assumed the full responsibility for governing. It was quite a site to see as all John Major wanted to do was go and watch a cricket match at Lords, the famous stadium in London.
I know we have this "2 1/2 month -transistion". I really believe that time has come to revisit the constitution and get the power transfer quickly and smoothly as we witness the disintegration happening right before our eyes. We are a better society than this.
MaxNYC:
"nope. Until the electoral congress votes him in, he is president elect. GW like it or not still runs the roost."
Technically, Obama will not become president-elect until the Electoral College meets next month.
There's a great deal of arrogance with Obama and his myrmidons (e.g., Salon) on this issue. The voters had to wait until March 1933 for FDR to be sworn in as president, and the economic situation was far worse then. We also had to wait until January 1981 for Reagan to be sworn in. We had both a bad economy then and a serious hostage situation in Iran that Carter, the worst president of the past half century, could not handle.
Be patient, children. Your messiah will be president soon enough. Then he will have his own cross to bear.
And to make sure of that, he's probably having himself preserved in alcohol even as we speak.
If Dodd and Frank are responsible for the financial mess, why is Greenspan so confused and contrite: and why did Paulson declare the end of "naked capitalism." The fact of the matter is that our banking system has been run by a horde of used car salesmen, which is really an insult to used car salesmen.
As far as Obama's potential is concerned, he has to do better than Gonzales, Rumsfeld, Cheney, Wolfowitz, Bolton, Thomas and company.
No impeachment huh? Bush was not bad enough huh?
I intend to NEVER again vote for Democrats as a result.
Democrats and Republicans think they OWN the United States. the US Sheepulace follows along.
don't bitch that there are no useful or valid checks and balances in our society when nobody wants to follow through and DO THE RIGHT THING.
Yes, we have been treated to several orgies of gravitas from our President-Elect, but I am not brimming with hopeychangey. Apparently, he has selected a Scapegoat of State to take the fall for not getting out of Iraq (is calling in the generals still the plan for his first day?). He has alerted the markets to Geithner, who is already doing what he is doing that is or isn't helping. He has told us rebuilding a world economic system and a manufacturing base in the US won't happen fast--so now we know. This AM, I read all the powers that be have cranked up the loans, bailouts, and obligations (guarantees) to $8 TRILLION. When I went to bed, it was the $750 BILLION, plus another $800 billion Paulson got somehow the other day, the $300 Billion for Citi, etc. I am losing track--but now it's eight BIG ONES! This doesn't even count the public works WPA stuff the PE is bandying. So...is he president yet? No. But too close. ANd could we not suspend the Constitution and put him in now? Could we at least not do that?
I am truly worried about you. All this anger is extremely unhealthy. Please kick back and have a good Thanksgiving. Remember to breathe. Remember to smile.
...by standardizing his handful of uncreative, repetitive posts into an indexed directory (free for the asking)?
For instance, that last gem of his... R and D, all the same, yadda, yadda, yadda.... .
Let's simply call that "Number 4"
There's even something in it for you, dear Brighty- a significant reduction in risk of contracting Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.
Bush should quit. We should all ask him to quit. Oh yes, then Cheney would be president. OK, Bush AND Cheney should quit. Then, who, the Speaker of the House would be president? Nancy Pelosi? Our country's first woman president!!
Or the Congress should move up the inauguration date temporarily to December 1, 2008. Like they did with Herbert Hoover and FDR so long ago.
Calming a jittery nation? Looks like he is already failing on the job.
The U.S. government has been shredding the constitution for the last 50 years (democrat and republican alike), and some still think it is in-force. I almost feel sorry for the arrogant jerk that thinks he can fix this mess. We are headed for the french solution. The Iclanders got it right. It's time to bust some windows.
"The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants. It is its natural manure."
Thomas Jefferson
"That sense of impatience on the part of everybody -- it's very strong this time," the Obama campaign advisor said."
No, he is not President yet.
The country is going to hell and people realize that we're not being leveled with about the mess and they want solutions NOW, not more cooing and oohing from the media about Barack Obama and how many bowel movements he had this week.
People are not impressed with "inside baseball" stuff. Only insiders are impressed with themselves. Conducting job interviews is hardly earthshattering, but then again, we've come to expect the media to hype just about anything Obama does.
Much of the initial coverage about Fort Hood turned out to be wrong. Is there anything wrong with that?
