  • Walter Shapiro and Ayers!

Why would I expect anything less than anyone from Salon defending anyone from the radical left now or in the past. I was in my 30's. I remember it all. The Vietnam war was started by a Democratic president and congress, it was not fought to win and I never did fully understand why it was started. So with the death of 55,000 plus servicemen casualties, it was brougt to a close by a Republican president who was fighting anti-war protestors who were out to get his hide rather than letting him end the mess started by the Republicans. (This is never taught in schools or by the left wing press)

Its not different with the Iraq war. Those who helped start it (democrats) later deny their involvement and blame it all on President Bush.

There is no morality amongst the far left. They can get the governent to finance left wing organizations like ACRON, push labor unions upon workers who don't want labor unions and hundreds of other immoral actions but its always the Republicans they can pass the blame on with the help of all the left wing media. There is no shame on the left.

  • Paul Daniel Ash: How does it fill to be lied to by the media?

    Paul Daniel Ash said:

“When you have to lie about what somebody did, even somebody you hate - especially somebody you hate - it's got to feel pretty nasty. What's that like for you?”

You are being naïve if you believe what the media tells you without thinking. Don’t you know that every article, every where, in all media outlets, are biased by the author?

The ethics in journalism went the same way as respect for life went, down the toilet.

Do you consider this article as ethical? Why the interviewer did not ask about the bomb destined to kill the soldiers and their dates in the attack they were planning when the bomb exploded?

  • no morefunky

The Vietnam War was started by Eisenhower who was a Republican. Democrats later escalated it.

  • Walter Shapiro: With this interview you glorify terrorism!

    Walter Shapiro wrote:

“Proving yet again that there are indeed second and even third acts in American lives, Bill Ayers had transformed himself over a quarter of a century from an on-the-run-from-the-law member of the Weather Underground to a Distinguished Professor of Education at the University of Illinois at Chicago.”

With these words you hint at the possibility that Osama Bin Laden may one day be considered a “distinguished” professor or citizen some where in the world, even in the United States.

If Ayers did it why not Osama? And Osama would not have to repent, Ayers has not.

Thanks to you and journalists like you we are in our way to make it possible.

Did not Obama say he might sit to negotiate with Ahmadinejad? Might it not be that in the future you write an article about Ahmadinejad’s visit to the White House where he was honored with a state dinner?

And Ahmadinejad would not have to repent about his plans for the annihilation of Israel.

Repentance is not a requisite for acceptance of terrorists anymore in the America that you are helping to build Mr. Shapiro.

I don't have time to go through it all, but I'd just like to point out one area where your post is openly disingenuous.

The Brink's robbery in 1981 was not performed by the Weathermen. It occurred 5 years after the Weathermen disbanded and a full year after Ayers and his wife turned themselves in.

By continuing to post falsehoods in order to add potency to your arguments, you merely weaken them and cast doubt upon everything else you say. I find it odd, because you'll find that the majority of people disagree with Ayers' methods, even if they are sympathetic with his mindset. Exactly what are you hoping to accomplish by gilding your accusations with falsehoods?

  • @ Juan Enrique

"As for Ayers, the bomb that killed his comrades was full with antipersonnel artifacts like nails and it was destined to be exploded in a dance for soldiers and their dates. That it did not kill hundreds of them was purely providential, that day God had mercy on the innocent.

Now the media, including the interviewer from Salon, is silent about that."

Silent? Everybody knows about this, including you. Why would the interviewer waste time asking questions about an event that was very accurately documented a long time ago? Plenty of information is available about the event. Use the Google. Has it occurred to you that it wasn't the point of the article to discuss that event?

And if you really believe that innocents were spared due to divine intervention, then isn't it also fair to say that the same omnipotent/omnicient diety prompted those individuals to create the bomb in the first place? There! Nobody to blame but God! Boy, that was easy!

  • More Madness

I agree with BernieO above, that violence only begets violence, but to my mind what destroyed the peaceful anti-war movement was the murder of four students at Kent State by the national guard, with impunity. As a military veteran, I know full well that the explanations given were sheer poppycock, i.e. no one knew their guns had live ammunition and no one knew who gave the order to shoot. When live munitions are issued, the military makes a point of apprising everyone of the potential for danger, and anyone who shoots a weapon without orders to do so, especially domestically, is subject to a court martial. All military groups know who is in charge, and everyone in the military knows when his gun is loaded with live rounds. Once you realize that the federal government is willing to kill college kids on campus, it's a whole new ball game.

Then, there were the murders of JFK, MLK, RFK, the freedom riders in Dixie, the Black Panthers in Chicago, the Chicago police riot, inter alia. As others have pointed out, little kids were being roasted alive by Napalm, and Vietnamese children are still being born with horrendous defects due to agent orange. It's hard to continue life as usual when such monstrosities are being committed.
