The narrow reactionary right's focus on Bill Ayers is inaccurate. The Weatherman did not stop the war - the U.S. soldiers in Vietnam who refused to fight stopped it, and the Vietnamese NLF and NVA won it.

what in the world makes you think we (collective here) think of soldiers as dirt bags and criminals? I have nothing posted to indicate that is the case...have you? Would you cite it for me please?
you seem to have a terible load of bitterness and that's too bad...but because you loathe us, do not feel it is reciprocal.
okay?
If Ayers was really violent he would bitch slap Camille Paglia.
Chris is in a hermit hut somewhere? I think?
`O, of all the worldly cares I've have shunned,
`O, and I'm free, a small hut is enough for me.*
I'll share this: `Chris was the first blog I read.
Floyd invited me to write @ Atlantic Free Press.
I'm guessing it's still out there? Google? O my.
My name is Arthur James. I wrote 4- rants @ AFP. It was Chris Floyd's 'sister site' I was still learning where to place a [,] and spiel. There use to be a you-tube anti-war 'gig' at the bottom of a personal expression, which I wrote, around the time of Bush's coup, and it was a few years ago. Maybe gargle it?
I wrote for my safety.
The gang were thugs.
Man o day, Oh, bathe!
My disgust with people like Ayers and Dorhn are that they carried out their violence by putting working class people in the crosshairs. His little fantasy about putting a bomb in the bathroom to take out a Pentagon computer? Well, who's cleaning that bathroom? Idiot. He lived, and lives, a life of privilege, sheltered from the draft with his educational deferment, attending his Ivy League schools with the money of the parents he dissed, and putting other people's middle and working class sons and daughters at risk to make his political point and play "hero."
He should not be welcomed into our present. He's a relic of a spoiled, violent past. The anti-war movement of the time was in the right, but people like the Weathermen and the SLA and other like-minded upper-class twits did nothing but target Americans who didn't have the choices they had, who would be in the way of the inexpert bombs they planted, or of their bullets as they carried out bank robberies to fund their "rebellion."
No true progressive who claims to care about the class divides in our country should do anything but spit in the faces of these domestic terrorists. They're no better and no different from the Eric Rudolphs and Tim McVeighs of the extreme right.
The winds of tyme roll out from sock puppets bobbing in a caustic sea
I fear they care not a whit for you and me
No longer can they pretend glorious virtue
Their hubris and pride will hurt you
The worst are arrogant self absorbed twits
Methinks they took too many hits
Will Obamas usher in an age of fellowship and peace
Or will our nation's wheels run out of grease
I cannot, by this interview and listening to this very thoughtful man get where the Right would label him a terrorist. We really have had in the last 8 years in particular, a lot of noise and very little in the way of sober discussion about complex realities. Beyond proving that he really was not a close associate of incoming President Obama, the conversation seems to become a meditation not only about the senselessness of war from someone who abhors violence, but an honoring of this moment in history when we may just have become mature enough as a nation to work for "liberty and justice for all." I say this man is a pacifist. Pacifists fight, but the weapon of choice is words and reasoned, if passionate appeals to conscience, to our "better angels". He sounds like a man who is like so many of us who seek a shift away from the toxic discussion of opposites we've been having. Maybe now in the Obama era, we'll adopt a more thoughtful mindset of the kind reflected in interviews like this.
@SusanGSMcGee:
I had an epiphany last week about the "spat upon" soldier myth that never dies.
The story goes that uniformed servicemen, fresh off the plane from a year's service in a jungle war, were spat on by hippies and called a murder. And the soldier stands there and takes it, presumably hurt to the core by such ingratitude.
Pause to run that scenario in your mind.
A hardened man, used to killing and being shot at on a daily basis, a wired, extremely traumatized young man in extremely good condition and trained in hand to hand combat, stands there and lets it happen? Not only that soldier, but countless others, as the right wing keeps telling us?
And that soldier didn't kill or maim the spitter? All of those soldiers? Really?
Don't recall any "hippies" going to the hospital after such incidents. Amazing, as that would be included in the narrative with great joy by anyone who would be inclined to believe such things happened.
