I defended Obama throughout the campaign. Now that he is president elect I had hoped that we would quickly get over the shame of old white ladies fearing some uprising of angry black people. I'll try to quietly allow African Americans their moment in the sun, and hope I don't hear more of "down with white people" than I've heard already even if it's just an immature joke. I hope Salon will move on from it's "whitening expressions" and help us focus on the task at hand. We have a victory to celebrate because the oppressive policies and attitudes we've had to suffer for 8 years will no longer oppress the poor and middle class of ALL colors and creeds. Yes, Obama is 1/2 black, but we elected him to represent us all. Let Salon bring us articles that ask how we should move forward.
I couldn't handle watching Fixed news during this campaign....but watched some last night and more this morning. We all have to remember that while Karl Rove has found a home on Fox, he also ignored a Congressional subpoena. If you or I tried to do the same, we'd be in jail. I was so pleased that the numbers were beyond refute. No hanging chads, no Supreme Court, no voting machines to calibrate. We spoke, we voted, we kicked butt. I was equally undone by the celebrity given to Tom DeLay - another politician who left disgrace in his wake. The right has to look squarely in the mirror with a level of intellectual and spiritual honesty to see who they have become. They are not the party of lean government, fiscal responsibility.....they have become a party of divisiveness and hateful innuendo. My greatest wish is that the Gov from Alaska fades into the snow.....and that the Republican party re-invents itself to something that is policy rather than culturally driven. That is a debate worth having - the Rev. Wright, Ayers, Kalidi, smarm is a thing of the past - which was part of the message to the Republicans last night.
...I have to admit it was nice to see a more human side from FOX. The Republican party as they know it is largely over. Its media will also have to change as they redefine themselves. Maybe it would finally be appropriate for them to ditch Rove. He represents what has gone and can be no more.
reflect the fact that Fox's viewership is overwhelmingly about the age of Rupert Murdoch himself--that is, 137 or something.
As this angry, elderly demographic of rural white racists literally starts to die off, abominations like Fox will disappear and America will slowly, hopefully, become a better place.
The kind of conservatives who are pro-big business elitists, however, are of all ages and will always be with us, I'm afraid. Let's marginalize them into becoming the small special interest party they were meant to be, like the FDP in Germany for example, which never garners more than 15% of the vote.
"If W drove this bus to the cliff, isn't Rove the one who gave him the keys?"
The keys, the welded-stuck steering wheel, the cinder block on the accelerator, the bled brake lines and nitromethane in the fuel tank.
They "blocked streaming" or whatever the term is. peace
erithtotl,
I believe that CNN wants to be part of the sea change that's coming for the Republicans. To that end, they seem to be making a play for a certain segment of the FOX news audience. Good luck with that. Truth will probably maintain its liberal bias for quite a awhile, so I may shift over to MSNBC.
Not to beat a dead horse, but what really summed up the two electorates last night came at the end during their respective speeches. McCain congratulates and wishes Obama well which was met with a chorus of boos. Obama thanked McCain for his patriotic contributions and received a huge round of applause. The hardcore Republican base is disgraceful.
Ft. Greene was insane last night--hollers of joy in the street till the early mornings. Someone joked to me that she was ready to get her rioting on, while I pulled out my lighter and said "How hard is it to overturn a car? That Mini over there can't be too heavy." But besides bad humor, there was no crazy behavior--just a lot of happy, happy people. So many hugs with strangers, toasts in the streets, and high fives from people sailing by in honking cars.
It was one of the most amazing nights of my life--once disbelief settled into joy, I couldn't imagine being anywhere else.
I too viewed Fox more than I ever have; 100% actually, since I never watch it.
Regardless, it was hilarious to see the corpulent Karl Rove and the funereal Chris Wallace solemnly discuss their mortal fear of the "impending" reinstatement of the equal time rule for broadcasting, which would "decimate" right wing talk radio.
Brilliant stuff!
Not a job I would have wanted, watching Fox for five hours! I generally start yelling back at the TV within five minutes. Thanks for doing the hard jobs so we don't have to.
The clip of Juan Williams was interesting; for my money, one of the most emotional moments of the night came when Gene Robinson started talking about what the election meant to him after speaking to his parents in SC. His voice broke a few times; it made my wife cry (again, she'd been crying before)...very touching moment.
Glad a previous poster and Rove brought up the "better angels of our nature" quote. It was Obama who appealed to the better angels of America's nature and never seemed to stoop to criticism of personalities. He did not criticize Palin's unwed pregnant teenaged daughter or expensive wardrobe or bring up her witch doctor clergyman. If McCain had run a campaign on a similar high note, the contest might have been closer. But it was McCain's lack of new ideas, choice of Palin and similarity to Bush that did him in.
It would behoove the entire country if we returned to the Fairness Doctrine. Once Reagan eliminated it, our country's media devolved into rudeness, lies and attack theater.
Thanks to Mr. O'Hehir for watching Fox so we didn't have to.
Much of the initial coverage about Fort Hood turned out to be wrong. Is there anything wrong with that?
The accountability imposed by another country for the CIA's kidnapping and torture reveals much about our own.
