You need to get educated sport. Card checks will not put anyone "out of business." They will simply eliminate the Rovian style (and worse) tactics utilized by employers for the last 60 years to manipulate and defeat Union elections.
Instead of sticking fingers in the eyes of the Loyal Opposition why are you not proposing actions for your leader to take with the mandate he has been given? Positive energy is much more productive. Revenge is its own reward. This is the eleventh presedential election for me and I have been happy with my choice all but once. If Obama makes that twice I will be a happy American. God bless the greatest country in the world and our next President. I did not vote for him but he says he will be my President and I believe him.

Couldn't you just shove knitting needles into your eyes?
Uncle Al
... a number of times over the course of these past 2 days. mind you, I AM NOT A FAN, but that guy does know his stuff. he had actually predicted an overwhelming Obama win the day before (his website is a testament to his political savvy) and was beyond complimentary of the way our new -- and fabulous -- president-elect ran his campaign. this morning i actually heard Rove chide the idiots on Fox and Friends when they tried to imagine the transition -- and how awful Obama's staff would be. "Give the new administration a chance to settle in" he said, "it's not easy. Don't be so anxious to criticize them before they've even set up shop". sure we know what will happen once they DO set up shop, but i, for one, was gratified to hear Rove take the high road for a change. who knows? maybe he'll discover it's nice up there, and stick around. stranger things have happened...
Can't be THawk, the grammar is too good. It sounds a lot...suspiciously...like Elephantman.
Andrew O'Hehir's ignorance and condescending attitude toward the idea of "card check" is typical of a yuppified, college-boy liberal, who doesn't really care a fig about the fates and fortunes of the millions of working and middle class Americans who should be voting Democratic routinely in every election. Card Check is a method of approving a union which is designed to prevent employers from coercing and intimidating their employees to keep them from unionizing. These activities are all illegal as unfair labor practices, but the right-wing hacks appointed by Bush refuse to enforce the law. The Fox News people don't really care if unionization will help make life a little easier and better for millions of their fellow Americans. They see it purely in terms of brute power politics. If it helps the unions it hurts the right-wing Republicans and their Big Business allies. Accordingly, they're against it and, of course, that's all too proletarian and trivial for the likes of Andrew O'Hehir. At least Obama knows all about card check.
Thanks for this, Andrew.
Always has. I can't figure him out. But I have always sensed a defensiveness in his conservatism. This was eloquent.
By the way, what's "card check"?
I was on the same channel with Andrew. I was hoping for weeping and gnashing of teeth. It was fun and I still do not know what card checking is either. I watched them two years ago while they fumbled and declared Democrat winners days after the fact. I cannot help it. I had to watch Fox eat it. By the by, I was impressed by Juan also. It is just hard to empathize with this man who defends the company that gives him a paycheck every chance he gets. Hume sucks and has always sucked.
It's no longer red vs. blue or liberal vs. conservative or black vs. white, it's intelligent and educated vs. ignorant and superstitious. look at the states that voted for McCain. Do any of them have more than one university? Would you want your children growing up in any of them? The all too true statement that Obama said in Pennsylvania . . . ("clinging to their guns and religion") could be applied to half the country- but not the half that produces Rhodes scholars." [emphasis added]
This is just a bit reductionist, don't you think? But hey, what the hell do I know? I'm just a dumb atheist liberal from the Deep South.
Texas has its Austin. Mississippi has its Jackson. Louisiana has its New Orleans (yes, we're still here). Kentucky has its Lexington. Tennessee has its Memphis. I could go on.
If you want to foam at the mouth over something, try directing your rage at the Electoral College. Or perhaps at the blatant gerrymandering of district maps that serves no other purpose and yields no other effect but to artificially skew Congressional representation to the right. Democracy is all about the process.
The culture war is their game. Why are you playing it?
You'll excuse me if I don't stick around for an answer just now. I need to get back to the kitchen before my arugula wilts.
There are many reasons to be happy that Obama won, but seeing the pain on the FOX news faces is a small but real one. Now I fear they will begin the effort to destroy Obama so he can't accomplish his goals. They (conservative Republicans not FOX)did it to Bill Clinton and I'd bet the farm that they are gearing up again. The right will not, can not, allow a Democrat, particularly a liberal one, to succeed at anything. They will go after Obama, and we have to be ready for it.
...back on the New Year's episode of Fox News Sunday, at the start of 2008.
Bellatrix LeStrange--isn't that Sarah Palin's real name?
all day i kept watching the replays of the network's calling the election for obama - on youtube and elsewhere -and it felt like he was winning again and again and again.... i was like a rat tapping the bar for another cocaine pellet.
what a great night!
part of me is oddly detached. like this must be happening to another country. i have a feeling it won't really sink in until january. fine by me!
i watched the returns on msnbc. because i just like how they talk, frankly. it's smart. i flipped over to cnn and watched bill bennett for awhile. what a load. jeffrey toobin should get his own show.
though i fear fox will become more powerful now. if you thought they were full of crap before, just wait till they swing into opposition mode. that network is tailor-made for it.
Hillary 2012 (as a Republican). you betcha!
