All this talk about "God's plan" demonstrates exactly whose side the nowadays Republicans would have been on in the revolutionary war.
They believe in what amounts to the divine right of kings. It is a feudalist belief system. They talk about freedom and all of that, but when you get right down to it, these guys still think America needs a king.
Don't accept it as "God's plan." Consider it "the will of the people" and accept that, but to say "Its God's plan" is nothing more than:
1: Accepting fuedalism as previously stated and;
2: Copping out of your responsibility as a voter.
The thing with Democracy is you cannot afford to cop-out of your decisions as a voter, you have to vote according to what you think is best, and if you are such an ignorant dumbass that you think Obama is a communist, then you need to cure yourself of at least half of that condition before you are ready to vote.
Who gets elected as president is not up to some mythical genocidal maniac. It is up to Americans, who might be known for their arrogance, but aren't that bad.
It really is no use reasoning with these people. They obviously have their own world-view, and no amount of logic, no overwhelming evidence of fact will change that. Maybe it would be a good idea to split the country in half--red states and blue states can each go their separate ways. Then they can elect whatever far right wing demagogue they want for their president. Oh, and they also inherit Iraq. Good riddance.
In Alaska they redistribute the oil company profits by giving every Alaskan a rebate of a few thousand dollars. Sounds like socialism to me!!
Hey isn't that what Obama wants to do? Tax the big oil companies and redistribute the wealth to the rest of Americans, via new bridges, better schools, etc. OOOOH but a Democrat wants to do the exact same thing that Palin does in Alaska, the Democrats must be bad bogeyman socialists. Guess what? No one with half a brain buys into the Republican distortion of redistribution of wealth. Wake up America! Social Security is socialism. Medicare is socialism. Subsidising farmers and Tobacco( GASP COUGH) is socialism. Get over it!! Ever since we began with an income tax decades ago, the wealth has been redistributed!!!
This is what Palin and McCain are really about: coercive control over the bodies of others; whether it is young men going off to war or civilians who happen to live in countries at war with the US or young women not wanting to have a baby or convicts on death row. Republican administrations have begun to look like totalitarian, Facist states. There are generally no differences between the parties in taxing and spending but a major difference in terms of priorities. The Republicans must control using any tactic they can. Here, they are using the same tactic as the Taliban. Fear.
It seems to me that Salon and many of its readers believe in some kind of inherent power of the GOP to control the minds of rural and conservative Americans. As if these people would not want to think that Obama is a terrorist or that a Democratically controlled federal government would mean a socialist agenda. The fact is, however, these things that the McCain campaign and numerous campaigns around the country are saying these types of things because they stick. There has not been full Democratic control of the federal government in 40 years, and then 30 years before that. Both times these federal governments rolled in huge packages of social programs aimed at equality and justice where there had been none. In the 60's it was the Great Society plan and in the 30's it was the New Deal. Most people, albeit wrongly, associate each of these periods with socialism and have that historical backdrop by which to measure a proposed Democratic super-majority. It is this fact that keeps conservatives from voting for Democrats in the first place, if they can pallet the total disdain for knowledge that the modern incarnation of the Republican party has shown. There is something even more to this issue than just historical factors as well. We live in a country that puts so much emphasis on the individual and his/her responsibility to provide his/her family with opportunity. Many people come to believe that when they have bought a house, paid their bills, educated their children, provided for their future that this was all done on their own as told from the mountain of American freedoms and individualism. It is inherently part of their psyche. Why have there been no exposes on this idea? Why it is a mind control game that the GOP plays? It seems to me that other than Obama's ability to distance himself from the rest of the Democratic party, which is laughable sometimes, and the fact that the Repubs have screwed up soooo bad the last 15 years, the Democrats would have no game plan because they don't know how to appeal to this part of our culture. Where does the individual get uplifted in paying higher taxes? Where does the individual get uplifted for being more responsible to his/her neighbors or community? These are the questions that the Democrats will have to answer in the next two years if they will the way they are projected to win. Because if they don't, and they can't turn things around from where they are going now, then they are in big trouble. It might be very prudent, especially because the press in this country is supposed to hold EVERY administration accountable, for Salon to do an expose on these issues and how a Democratic presidential administration and Congress will appeal to that American individual in each one of us, no matter how big or small it happens to be.
What boggles the mind is people not questioning Palins's arguments: Branding Obama a socialist because of an innocent response to Joe the plumber- really people use your brain please! Obama an elitist, give me a break McCain has been running in the elitist crowd all his life. He also married one.(doesn't make him a bad person). Obama not experienced/not ready - what makes her more ready? Obama can't keep Americans safe - what make her think she or McCain can? We don't know who the real Obama is - he's has been in our face for over 2 years. She has been there barely 8 wks? Who is the real Sarah Palin? A while back Campbell Brown of CNN aired a video on Palin and husband's association with Alaska Independent Party but stated that they were told not to air it. It appears strange to me that controversial stories on the web regarding Palin,(letter written by someone who has known her since 92), her son Trig and also a video of McCain's preacher conveniently disappear and are never mentioned by the media. Are they under a gag when it comes to McCain/Palin. Other point to take into consideration: why are negative ads against Obama (the farmer not going to expand his business if Obama wins -ridculous)posted by other sources other than RNC. I'd like to know who is behind them and who is really paying for them. Vote your choice but do it for the right reasons not because of scare tactics.
