Obama woos Michigan voters on the economy

Obama and Biden campaign hard in the Wolverine State, where a loss -- although not anticipated -- could spell disaster for Democrats on Nov. 4.

The letters thread is now closed.

Michigan is not at all a sure win

If it comes down to just the black vote in Detroit against the rest of the state Obama will assuredly lose both Michigan AND the election.

Gee, that's a lot of eggs in one hat. The worst chances Dems have had since McGovern in fact.

Suddenly it's looking like all the race-baiting and voter disenfranchisement and piling on the candidate winning in the big electoral states wasn't such a good idea after all

And this is BEFORE the Repugs roll out their October surprise and we can all rest assured they will and it will be bad.

Why does the writer assume city dwelling Detroit aren't hockey fans?

The Wings play in Joe Louis Arena. They used to play at the Olympia, next to Northwestern High School, which was nearly all-black when my dad graduated from it in 1943. It's the Pistons, the essentially all-black team, who play way out in the burbs. The Red Wings represent the city and Detroiters are proud of them.

need a new party.

If dems had a candidate that simply and confidently promoted straight left wing policies (eradication of poverty, mandating/socialising universal healthcare, reducing military spending, etc), then they would be running away with this election instead of going neck and neck.

Why is this the case after 8 years of disaster and decay?

If dems don't win this they they should pack up and go home. They can come back when they are prepared and able to fullfil their proper role, win power with the right policies and keep the extreme right in check.

And they should apologise to Nader.

WOO THIS! OBAMA'S RACE!

RACE AS A TOPIC OF DISCUSSION

My grandfather often repeated the old saw that people should never discuss religion or politics since those topics often resulted in endless conflict with never a chance of resolution.

That advice goes back a good while since I’m a gramps myself now. I’ve never abided by it anyway since both religion and politics are sources of excellent discussion.

The advice is passe’ today but if politics and religion were still off-limits in 2008, another more volatile subject would have to be added to the injunction, namely, race.

To mention a person’s race either directly or indirectly today can raise more hackles than politics or religion combined. In fact, to say virtually anything about a Black candidate for public office in America, even if the reference were to his or her hobbies, printer paper, or favorite beverage, runs the risk of charges of racism nowadays.

Comments about Whites or Asians carry no such risk, for some reason.

Yet, volatile or not, and moreso now that we have the first serious Black candidate for president, discussion of race has become a top discussion topic mainly because Senator Obama and many Blacks mention it so often.

Obama himself initially brought up his race, (recall his line about not having a face that’s featured on our currency when he also, casually, mentioned that he’s Black), for a reason, not to discount his race but rather to accent it and suggest that Whites who voted against him were out and out racists.

A perfect stranger at a Fourth of July party I attended, having imbibed a few adult beverages, sat near the entrance to the backyard and asked everyone who passed through the gate, “Are you voting for Obama?” If the new arrivals said, “No,” he then said, “Well, you’re a racist!”

Funny or not, Mr. Adult Beverage was making a valid point, Obama’s point, that if Whites don’t vote for him then we’re racists, a transparent appeal to White Guilt...

John McCain will NOT win Michigan

Michiganders suffering from high unemployment brought on by catastrophic job losses on top of everything else voting for Republicans? Won't happen. If it does, we are all in serious trouble, and while I might need new glasses, I just don't see it.

Obama Leads in Michigan

Here in Michigan, Obama's polls are moving up while McCain's are stagnant: Obama's lead in recent polls range from +5 to +9.

non-sequitur

Despite all the talk about expanding the map, Obama's own strategists don't see much of a path to the White House if he doesn't carry Michigan's 17 electoral votes, and neither do Republicans.

"Despite"? That sentence doesn't make any sense. "Expanding the map" necessarily includes trying hard to hold on to what we already have.

@ hootowl

"Suddenly it's looking like all the race-baiting and voter disenfranchisement and piling on the candidate winning in the big electoral states wasn't such a good idea after all"

Yes, hootowl, because one only needs to win a few big states to win the whole thing. None of the other states (like MI) are important.

Race-baiting and voter disenfranchisement? What the hell are you talking about? Are you a poor wounded PUMA? Wanna talk about baiting - the Palin choice was pure bait and nothing else for Xian fundies and soccer moms. (Republican men have been engaged in a different sort of -bating...)

What you call piling on is known in the real world as running an effective campaign.

You've posted your daily drivel here. You can collect your check from the McCain campaign and move on to another blog now.

Obama's strenghts in Michigan will be the Detroit area and the I-94 corridor. Count Grand Rapids (radical Republican stronghold) and all points north out for Obama. The state might very well go for McCain and for that it will have itself to thank when unemployment there reaches 15 percent under a withering Palin Administration in 4 years.

Reality Based

Wow, the trolls and idiots woke up early today.

Obama will take Michigan by a comfortable margin.

Economy

Who pays for the bailout?

Who pays for the Wars we are already in?

Who pays for the Wars we are going to get in?

Who transfers wealth from the many to the few?

The democrats and republicans spell disaster for all of us.

All those expenditures take money away from people and services that we should be providing them. There will be no money for education, health care, or rebuilding the infrastructure if we keep electing politicians who are in the pockets of the War Industry and Wall Street.

Since they own the media they pretend there is no alternative but to give in and pay up.

It is a financial crisis. It is grand theft. Both parties shoveling money into the crooks hands. Our money.
