What small-town America thinks of Sarah Palin

From Minnesota to Mount Rushmore, the coffee shops and bars are buzzing with talk of whether the moose-hunting mom is fit to be vice president.

The letters thread is now closed.

As usual, the Paline supporters' responses are simplistic and emotional--they fear Obama's intellect--

and Obama supporters responses are reasoned and evidence-based.

Who do we want running the country, reptiles or humans?

Palin, not Paline,

that is...

More to the point, what ANCHORAGE women think of Sarah Palin

This is from an account of an Anti-Palin Rally in Anchorage that has been forwarded by e-mail:

The Alaska Women Reject Palin rally was held outside on the lawn in front of the Loussac Library in midtown Anchorage. Home-made signs were encouraged, the idea was that Sarah Palin does not speak for all Alaska women or men.

Never have I seen anything like it in my 17 and a half years of living in Anchorage. The organizers had someone walk the rally with a counter, and they clicked off well over 1,400 people. This was the biggest political rally ever in the history of the State! Many people honked and gave the thumbs up as they drove by. And even those that didn't honk looked wide-eyed and awe-struck at the huge crowd that was growing by the minute. This just doesn't happen here.

So, if you've been doing the math, yes, the Alaska Women Reject Palin rally was significantly bigger than Palin's rally that got all the national media coverage! So take heart, sit back, and enjoy the photo gallery. Feel free to spread the pictures around to anyone who needs to know that Sarah Palin most definitely does not speak for all Alaskans. The citizens of Alaska, who know her best, have things to say.

Gimmee a Braaaaake!

I may be small town but I'm not completely stupid! Sarah Palin scares the hell out of me. What the hell would her 3 am call sound like. Blast the f'rs!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We are not talking Ms "she's got a cute ass" so she needs to be president here! Republicans already have a tough time being taken seriously on the world stage and I don't need this bimbo degrading my image even more. We all know she's a 'trick" by McCain and there couldn't have been a more "political" pick. Please tell me, McCain, that you are not serious!!!!! It's suicide.

Perception vs Reality

I find it disturbing that Palin supporters haven't realised how she's being treated by the McCain campaign. They roll her out and let he re-read the same old tired speech and then send her back into obscurity until they decide to use her again. They're attempting to sell her as someone who will "shake things up"...when the truth is she's someone they have on a very short leash. Its doubtful she'll be treated any differently in an Administration than she is in a campaign.

While they claim "sexism" at any critiszm of her policies, its they who practice it daily....no no honey, you just read the speech we wrote for you and let the men handle campaign"

Anyone who votes for McCain because they think Palin will be there to represent their views should think twice. Whatever her views are, they won't ever effect policy in a McCain Administration. Her purpose is to sway voters, not set policy.

TEXAS RANCHER AGAINST PALIN

HELLO - NO QUESTION PALIN ENERGIZED THE FUNDAMENTLIST REPUBLICAN BASE - BUT PLEASE BE AWARE THAT MOST AMERICANS ARE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD - PALIN, LIKE McCAIN, IS NO FRIEND OF THE GREAT MAJORITY OF AMERICAN WOMEN - EVEN THOUGH SHE SAYS SHE CAN "SEE RUSSIA FROM HER HOUSE IN ALASKA", SHE IS A JOKE RELATIVE TO INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS - PROTECTED BY McCAINS MANAGERS, SHE HAS REFUSED ALL BUT TWO MEDIA INTERVIEWS - HER HUSBAND HAS REFUSED TO RESPOND TO A BI-PARTISAN SUBPOENA CONCERNING ETHICS PROBLEMS IN ALASKA ( REMIND YOU OF THE LAST 8 YEARS) - WHAT REALLY SCARES ME IS SHE SEEMS TO BELIEVE WHAT SHE SAYS - PALIN IS A GOOD CHEERLEADER BUT McCAINS CHOICE HAS DESTROYED HIS CHANCHES FOR WINNING THIS ELECTION !!

Let's Cut the Crap

I love how pollsters pretend Americans are so sophisticated and care about issues. SINCE WHEN?

THis election is simple.

the Woman or the Black guy? With a percentage actually voting on issues (educated voters and young people in college who will be in the minority.)

Anything else is BS.

Unbelievable!

If American voters are stupid enough to view a McCain/Palin presidential ticket as "maverick," or "reform," they deserve the continuing financial ruin and high national unemployment; spreading war in the Middle East; repeal of Roe v. Wade; destruction of social security; refusal to institute government healthcare; drilling off our coasts with inevitable oil spills and ruination of the tourism industry; drilling in the Arctic wilderness, with the resultant environmental degradation; rise to $200/barrel oil by the end of 2009 at the latest; and so forth, which are certain to follow.

Oh, and don't forget: the further erosion of America's worldwide standing in science. We are already the laughingstock of the globe for our rejection of evolution and denial of global climate change. With Palin in the White House, we'll see further spread of the laughable "science of creationism" in our schools along with a continuation of the disastrous "abstinence only" sex education. You can see where this got Palin's daughter.

Name one thing that's better after 8 years of Republicans in the White House, other than oil-and-defense companies' profits and the bank account balances of the top 1% of wealthy Americans. And yet still, American voters are seriously considering giving them another four years.

Unbelievable!!!

Small towns?

Northglenn (not North Glenn) is not a small town, it's a 1960s era suburb of Denver (and my long time residence). I wonder about the research for this article.

In any case, as usual, the reasons given by "undecideds" for voting are as disturbing as ever. Jefferson would be appalled at the ineffectiveness of our public education system.

Moose-shooting mama

Palin will shake up Washington. She has the drive and integrity. She will not beat around the bush like Obama has (remember FISA and NAFTA).

stuck on stupid

I see the demo craps are out in force over Gov Palin. Why is it they can't accept the fact she has more experience running a government, that being the state of Alaska, with an annual budget in the billions, than both NOBAMA and BIDEN combined? Neither of these two fools has ever held a real job, unless you count being a community organizer as some high powered employment. Probably would get more serious discussions at the locate Starbucks. You poor lost soles just have to realize McCain put a very large turd in NOBAMA'S punchbowl and he can't seem to get around it. Maybe with less pot and coke, his mind would have been clear enough to figure it out. It's too bad the demo craps didn't select Hillary, at least then they would have had a chance in 2008. Oh well, there's always 2012.
