Sarah Palin's dead lake

By promoting runaway development in her hometown, say locals, Palin has "fouled her own nest" -- and that goes for the lake where she lives.

The letters thread is now closed.

Yet another Palin cover story

Salon just doesn't get it. Palin's imploding on her own. She had a great two week run. She has no second act. The novelty's warn off. The polls bear this out.

Major portions of the economy were just nationalized. American capitalism as we knew it, is gone. Neither candidate has a clue. Nancy Pelosi's congress is going on vacation. Just as well. Has anyone noticed that congress is no longer a branch of government lately? And that it's the Democrats who did that?

And you guys are still going on about Palin.

I am telling you, the left's hysteria about Palin just pushes people toward Palin; and says more about the left than it does about Palin.

Poor land regulation = Crap

There's a reason why Wasilla is slammed by "Alaskans". Poor land regulation equals crap. Unfortunately, many U.S. cities have this drill down to a science.

Thursday, September 18, 2008 06:45 PM

Hey

I'm a staunch Obama supporter, and I can't abide Palin. BUT--I've been reading all these endless Salon stories raking her, and they ALL seem to rely on the same few people as sources. I know Wasilla is a small town, but come on! Is Anne Kilkenny the ONLY person anybody asks for an anti-Palin quote up there?? This is bush league.

Thursday, September 18, 2008 06:50 PM

So What?

The last time we had a heavy rain in the DC area the rain burned my skin and smelled like lye and there is smog across the country at the cruising altitude of passenger jets.

Are you thinking that Biden, Obama and McCain are champions of the environment?

Show me.

How is the environment in Iraq with all the depleted uranium munitions we use there?

Let's blame the woman.

She must be a witch!

If you buy products packaged in plastic - pot calls kettle black.

DuPont, isn't that in Delaware?

"Better Living Through Chemistry"

What state is c from?

Salon - raising the bar on hypocrisy!

Thursday, September 18, 2008 06:52 PM

Oh good, an environmentalist too

I realize there's been quite an onslaught of negative coverage on Palin from Salon in the past couple of weeks - however, besides the lies of the McCain campaign, the working-mother rhetoric, and the small-town backbiting tradition she seems to come from (anonymous sources from Wasilla, anyone?) - this article probably bothers me most.

Do we really need someone in the White House looking out for big-box store development/corporations/continued clear-cut development? Someone who won't look after her own neighborhood? This will lead me to read up on Obama's community organizing efforts & the effects he's had on the streets of Chicago.

In short, I think we need an individual in power with a longer worldview than the benjamins she will be stuffing in her pockets tomorrow.

...And forget McCain, whether he kicks or not during his tenure, he's toast.

Thursday, September 18, 2008 06:53 PM

Palin is a book banner.

Everything else is just noise.

An actual book banner for vice president. That should be the last thing that needs to be said about this woman.

Thursday, September 18, 2008 06:58 PM

Arrrrrrgh!

Not another front page Palin article. Can't we just vote this neophyte off the island and pretend it's McCain who Obama is running against?

On second thought, here's another article that proves she's a bonafide member of the "can't shoot straight" gang.

@fishfry

What makes you think Salon is "left"?

Does "left" and "right" really mean anything?

Lately, Salon is about as "progressive" as Rush Limbaugh.

Who's side are they on?

Take a whiff.

Thursday, September 18, 2008 07:01 PM

Is this desperation, or what?

You mean her lake is not as pristine as Lake Tahoe?

Hello, what about The Sea of Azov?

What about Lake Baikkal?

Then, there is always Deal Lake, in Asbury Park, right?

I used to fish for carp there and now all the carp you can find are librals carping about meanspirited Wepubwicans.

Hey, the Atlantic Ocean near Newark has been getting pretty polluted too.

That's her fault too, right?

Then they got all these fishes getting pulled out of the sea all over the oceans.

It's a Republican conspiracy, right?

All these dedicated hunters and fishers wanna do is turn our seas, oceans and lakes and rivers into dead, polluted wastelands, right?

Nobody but you refined pwogwessive elite people care about the environment, only you, and, unless we elect Barry O, even the Chesapeake Bay will become polluted.

You mean it is already polluted, after all of them good Democrat Maryland officials had the last 100 years to reverse the death of so many crabs, oysters and blue fish and stripped bass?

Yep, Sarah keelt alla dem fishes, she did, yup!

Thursday, September 18, 2008 07:02 PM

!!!Poseur Alert!!!

Caribou Barbie obviously doesn't know THAT much about fishing. She's got her little spincast rod/reel combo upside-down in that photograph... Being that it's the sort of tackle you give to a child to fish for bluegill, one would think that a serious outdoorswoman would at least know how to use it.

Shades of John Kerry and the deer-hunting gaffe.

Thursday, September 18, 2008 07:13 PM

BTW

How pristine is the environment in Chicago?

Thursday, September 18, 2008 07:13 PM

Alaskan tourism must be up by 175%.

What with all of the left-wing New York writers clamoring for live, local dirt on Governor Sarah Palin. Can there possibly be a single hotel room available in Wasila? Have they run out of corned beef? Have they flown in extra copies of the Sunday New York Times and pounds of Starbucks coffee?

Thursday, September 18, 2008 07:18 PM

Yep, Sarah keelt alla dem fishes, she did, yup!

Yup.

Thursday, September 18, 2008 07:19 PM

There is much more to talk about than Palin

Salon's facination with Palin has gone beyond politicaly concerned and into the realm of pathologicaly obsessive.

Thursday, September 18, 2008 07:25 PM

This article is inaccurate and misleading.

The author makes it seem as if Wasilla is nothing but box stores, which is simply untrue. Wasilla also has truck and car dealerships! And although the article mentioned the drive-thru espresso stands, they only hinted at what I consider to be the critical fact, which is that Wasilla is absolutely saturated with the damn things.

What are you trying to hide, Salon?!!

Thursday, September 18, 2008 07:26 PM

@Elephantman

Corned Beef?

Just go ahead and say it.

Thursday, September 18, 2008 07:28 PM

She opened the door

There are many polluted bodies of water, yes. We are not blaming Sarah Palin for all of them, no. Probably not even for Lucille, et al.

But. Palin has invited us to take a dip into her particular bodies of water. In trying to promote herself, invoking pristine images of the place she claims to love, identify with and protect, in making parallels between the Amazing Alaska she reveres and her own pristine self, Palin is now accountable for how she has actually loved and protected.
