Sarah Palin's powerful "First Dude"

Todd Palin has exerted unusual influence on his wife's Alaska government. In Washington, their methods would do Bush and Cheney proud.

The letters thread is now closed.

Is This the Best????

If the best women we can come up with in the country are Palin and Clinton then we are in big trouble. Surely there are more honest women with integrity that are in public office now and hopefully will be in the near future. THESE TWO ARE AN INSULT TO THE BEST IN WOMEN !!!

Tuesday, September 16, 2008 07:09 AM

I don't have a problem with getting Sarah & Todd as a package deal

I have a problem with getting Sarah! Regardless of who comes along with her!

If Todd has more national and international knowledge and exposure then she does, then hey, that's all to the good. Trouble is, I don't believe he does. Conundrum.

If we're still reading about Sarah Palin the terrorists win ...

Excuse me ... but didn't two major financial institutions just collapse? And this is your lead story?

Stop! Just stop! Just fucking stop playing culture war! I don't give a happy damn about Sarah Palin! Tell me WHAT IS GOING ON WITH OUR MONEY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

where's the "eskimo"?

i was led to believe he is Eskimo. funny, he doesn't look it...

Tuesday, September 16, 2008 07:31 AM

@ artarat

"Eskimo" is considered a slur... He is part Inuit - I can see it in his face, and in the face of his children... It's subtle, but it's there.

I could care less about the "First Dude" or "First Dud" whatever you want to call him. Keep these people away from teh levers of power or we are all going to be very sorry.

I'm agreeing with you that there are MUCH bigger concerns to be addressing...including "WHAT IS GOING ON WITH OUR MONEY."

Less of what's-her-name and more of substance on Salon.

I'm getting more of my "learning" (as far as Salon) from the letters thread than from the articles from which they spawn.

Tuesday, September 16, 2008 07:32 AM

@artarat

He's 1/8 Yup'ik (not sure that is how it is spelled).

Il Duce de Wasilla 2

"Palin's office redacted most of what they turned over, and refused to turn over more than 1,000 messages, citing executive privilege."

This chick is something else! I mean, talk about fascist. As governor of one of the smallest states, she's ALREADY claiming executive privilege in an investigation.

However, I wasn't aware that spouses of the office holder also had executive privilege, otherwise why would Todd Palin have access to the emails, but not a concerned citizen.

Saracuda and first dude

Fine by me if Saracuda gets a leg up from first dude. She likely needs it handling all the supermom tasks with such ease while looking so put together while slaying government dragons.

That said, however, let's get to the meat and potatoes of this campaign, please. Education? Yeah, both candidates want to improve it. Please tell us how. Economy? Yeah, both candidates want to change regulatory oversight. But how? Taxes? Yeah, both say the other side will raise and they will lower. Details, please.

If I were Saracuda and truly interested in improving the state of the American family and making a difference as a role model for women in government, I would be insulted by the consistent coverage that seems more fitting of a pop idol than an important politician. With concern she may be manipulated as a Karl Rove/Cheney puppet who will perform beautifully in the plan, I'd like to hear her speak her own words in response to some real issues. If she's so good, what's she afraid of?

carbontwelve

I've listened to the McCain stump speeches and ads about all the (usurped from OB) change and reform platform they'll bring in every direction possible. What I sorely find lacking is: HOW????????? Words, words, words. Peruse the Obama site, is my view---gee, actual plans and strategies and proposals.

Tuesday, September 16, 2008 07:50 AM

oops

Meant "OB" in prior post...

Tuesday, September 16, 2008 07:52 AM

oops three times!!!

BO. Barack Obama. I know how to spell, but acronyms do me in ;)

to amosprop

Thank you 7amosprop. Of course, you know you've asked the impossible--for a less than half-educated American to read a book--least of all one on HISTORY.

Gracias.

Did anyone notice the Mayor of Houston, Bill White, addressing his constituents in English AND Spanish?

Pelosi is one maggot with a gavel...

...and the Dems won't know what hit them after the ballot box gets thru with them for denying us daily access to AK's resources. I thank God every day for Sarah and Todd because I knew John was wavering but the next four will be exciting --then if Sarah chooses a black vp the Dems are out for decades. Back to the squirrels in 'Frisco, Nancy.

Hillary's Experience

As I recall, it was Hillary Clinton's experience as first lady that is largely responsible for her qualification to run for US Senator in New York and, later, for President.

And I believe it was the influence she exerted on Bill in health care and other matters that provided her with that experience.

So does that somehow diminish Bill?

Again, the left is protesting too much about Sarah Palin and that itself tells us more than what they actually say (we are scared!).

The unvetted dude

Sure a spouse or dude may be involved with government. However, this is really off the map especially taken in context with the degree of cronyism reported in the Palin governorship. The relationship becomes far less professional and far less doing what's best for the state of Alaska- let alone the USA. If the dude is used in this type of role, he should (just like Mrs. Palin) be vetted in the next 50 days before the election. The media is not only doing a poor job of vetting Mrs Palin's qualifications for VP, but is "not present" at vetting the Dude. And since both Mrs. Palin and the Dude may have been involved in some vindictive firing of an employee and other questionable behavior, this may need a looksee. That both Mr. McCain and Mrs Palin are not giving interviews to well-respected journalists, our democratic process is a joke.

Let's vett Mrs Palin. Let's vett the "Dude".

First Dude

Why is this a surprise?

Her church says that a wife is to submit to her husband.

Tuesday, September 16, 2008 08:03 AM

Interesting

I wonder if Mike was upset about Hillary's involvement in running the country when her husband was president.

Tuesday, September 16, 2008 08:07 AM

Analyze Obama or Hillary like this and you'll have a modicum of credibility-- and a real story.

You are demonstrating that you have an ability to investigate. Let's see you do it on Obama or Hillary. Then you'll have a blockbuster of a story, and a long one at that. We know you wouldn't dare. Nothing you or any of the other men of your ilk are doing is going to stop women from shattering the glass ceiling. I'm absolutely thrilled.
