Even more precise would be to specify that there is nothing wrong with being a Christian. Christians are:
Catholics, Episcopalins, Presbyterians, Methodists, Church of Christ, Baptists and many others who are perfectly respectable people.
If folks want to speak in tongues, worship without music, or handle snakes, I don't really care. That is their business and not mine. When they are minding their business, I am perfectly content to allow them to do it as long as they don't start trying to mind mine.
What we have to beware of are those End Times domininists who would try to not only trample upon the individual rights of the rest of us, but who, given power, would send us to war in the Middle East to provoke wars that they claim are prophecy in Revelations that must be fulfilled. They believe that Jerusalem must be entirely in the hands of the Jews for the Rapture to come.
In the their own churches, muttering about sin and hoping to go to Jesus, they present no danger to us. Interfering with public policy in violation of the Wall of Separation, they can be quite dangerous not only to our freedoms in this country but to prospects for peace in the world at large.
T., your links to the "he said/she said" about Obama and Ayers, while not being much different from the hearsay contained in this article by Talbot which you object to, do not describe Obama as having a "close, ongoing relationship" with Ayers, which I take was your intent. You want to try again, big guy?
if you don't care for that, try Oscar Wilde's "Salome" which I don't think has anything to do with salami. Whichever tickles your fancy, they're not m-o-n-o-t-o-n-o-o-s, as all the commotion about Sarah Palin has increasingly become. She's Attila the Hun, she's Joan of Arc, she's Ma Barker, she's Delilah......Extremism works both ways. Queen Elizabeth 1 was "good Queen Bess" to her admirers but "bloody Bess" to those she had locked in the Tower to await a grisly fate.
You are an abortion preacher, maybe even a late term abortion preacher, like Obama.Banned from a public library?not bookstores? bookstores would carry your book if they could make money! You are using our public libraries as an excuse to promote your book. She protected the children in her small town by not allowing children to have access to your views because she a mother! The only thing you have to fear is that you will be looked at as a fool!Be afraid Be very afraid!
The papers on Ayers/Obama are not he said/she said. The ones examined so far (out of thousands) are damning.
There's a web site (http://globallabor.blogspot.com) that has comprehensive research on this, including .pdf files of CAC documents showing grant approvals to Ayers-connected "schools" while legitimate educational institutions were turned down.
No he said/she said about it, and that's why Obama is trying so hard to squash the story.
No article about him and Obama?
The right-wing Christians have made this question more complicated, because they call themselves, "Christians." Period. We have seen great posts here on Salon in the past few days about this. e.g. Somebody asked for a Roman Catholic books at a "Christian" book store, and the clerk told her, "Oh, no. We don't have Catholic books. Only Christian books."
We need to work around their preposterous terminology. My suggestion is, "christianists," with a small c. All christianists are fundamentalists, but some fundamentalists, those who stay out of politics, are not christianists.
We need a term. "Evangelical" is not correct. It includes many nice human beings. No matter what we call them though, the christianists will continue to call themselves just plain, "Christians." They pronounce it in a distinctive way however. Sometimes you can use their pronunciation to distinguish them: They say, "Chrisssss-chun." Many S's, hissing. Sssssssnakey!
just so there is no doubt. May I suggest radical christianist to distinguish them from the decent and fair people who recognize that Roman Catholics are not only Christians but were Christians first. Those people who are always willing to ignore historical fact seem to me to be by definition pretty damned stupid.
The papers on Ayers/Obama are not he said/she said. The ones examined so far (out of thousands) are damning.
Then please provide a direct link to a particular piece of damning information. Not damning by inference, that is, by what you believe something means. I'm looking for damning by fact. A claim was made earlier that Obama and Ayers have a close relationship for the past 20 years. I want to see evidence of that. Like, holidays together with the 2 families, christmas cards, that sort of thing. Refusing to release records is not enough.
The decision to withhold information from the public, like McCain's decision to withhold his medical records or his wife's decision to withhold her tax returns, could be taken for a range of reasons, some of which may not be damning.
For example, this:
CAC documents showing grant approvals to Ayers-connected "schools" while legitimate educational institutions were turned down
Please show me that Ayers benefited from this, that Obama made it happen, and that Obama benefited as well. That would be damning evidence.
I provided a link to a web site with lot of information, not just "inference" but the actual documents themselves.
Look on the righthand side of the page. There are probably about 10 or so articles, some of them quite long and well-documented.
And this is only the tip of the iceberg.

If you are smug beyond any chance of self awareness and you are confirmed in your contempt for all but a few thousand Americans then Palin is the ideal candidate. Only a group of people who had already been successful in getting a chimp elected would run a howler monkey. There will be swiftblood to come, they will try to make her look good by casting Obama as the missing 9/11 hijacker, a jihadist.
If the rupuglicrat strategy is a winning campaign ploy then what is in play here are the hearts and minds of people who can be convinced that there really were wmd's in Irak, that the French are our enemies for not joining our war and the economy is on the upswing. It is so very hard to see it but Palin may be the one to sway them. God save the republic!
Much of the initial coverage about Fort Hood turned out to be wrong. Is there anything wrong with that?
