    Enlightened Selfishness For Heterosexuals

If you want better government that's capable of dealing with the real issues our country faces then take the issue of gay rights away from the religious right. It's not the whole answer by far, of course, but this issue does give the religious right an edge in our inland sea of red states. It animates them as much as abortion and helps to launch them into political office where they proceed with destructive and counterproductive policies. Gay people obviously are never going away, and we're not going back in the closet either. The good part is that when we are once granted full equality under the law most people soon recognise that the dire predictions of the theocrats don't come to pass, to say the least, and the issue begins to subside for good. This is the situation today in Massachusetts. Gay rights isn't just for gay people. It's for everyone who hopes for government that can focus on real problems and create a better future for all of us.
