What small-town America is saying about Obama

In diners and mobile homes from New Mexico to North Carolina, I listened to working-class people try to make sense of a black president named Barack.

The letters thread is now closed.

You are.

WHO's THE FOOL?

You are. For insisting on shoving an empty suit on the ticket that over half the party made clear they wanted no part of -much less half the country with an electoral map skewed by far to the center or right.

It's been obvious since super Tuesday he wouldn't win a general and glaringly obvious thereforth on.

Therefore you might want to save your condescending lectures for the Nobama zealots. ;-)

Small towns?

I live in a small town, with several smaller towns around it. I hear very few people being supportive of Obama. It is complex- but in the end, because most of the folks were GOP supporters to begin with, they are sticking with the GOP. They listen to trash talk radio, watch FOX news, and believe every word they hear because it makes them feel better about themselves, see the word in black and white with no complexities to grapple with, and gives them someone to blame for their woes. The conservative protestant ministers also follow this up by telling to vote straight ticket Republican because God wants them to, so they are reinforced. No problem. Palin is being well trained to say the things the GOP wants her to, and like Pavlov's dog the small town white folks respond with a drool ready to vote. It's over, because in the end all the people the Dems believe are on their side but really are not (lots of well educated bigots) will secretly vote GOP on Nov. 4th. Pandering to people who don't want to listen anyway just pisses off the base.

Who's the fool?

As a general rule

Hooty's the fool.

...ignore the repuglicker troll. It wants you to ignore the massive on-the-ground operation that Obama is putting into place (myself included)-- registering new voters, poll watching activism (including legal teams to contest voter purges -- so the RNC can't steal it quite so easily this time), get-out-the-vote efforts in every state... we're working very hard for the day that the fruits of community organizing come back and bite the repugs in the ass.

As 8 years of GOP (Greedy Oil Profiteer) rule and 28 years of GOP dominance in DC continue to wreak havoc on what's left of the American middle class, the rubes stay glued to Faux nooz, and continue to vote for their own impoverishment. I say, they deserve what they get... problem is, they're dragging the rest of us down with them. We're fighting to keep them from doing that again.

Metalman

Obama has indeed demoralized his base, with his ghastly swing to the right back in June & July. However, McSame's pick of Sarah "Quayle-in" has done a lot to re-energize Obama's base... at least it did in my case. I've started sending him money again and volunteered to do GOTV, voter registration & poll watching. Palin worries me & just about everyone I know.

Hootowl is Confused and Outraged.

Why don't blacks see Obama as he does, an Uppity Negro who doesn't know his place?? Maybe he can find some answers from his local Klan Kleagle. Or that informative website, www.stormfront.org.

@pointus

We're not demoralized, we're energized', to the tune of 66 million dollars in record new campaign contributions. You must be mouthing some mush from a rote memorized script, because you sound very much like you're out of tune in just a general way about shit.

Welcome back, ShawnWM!

“…rural white Americans are limited educationally, socially, economically & geographically.”

I have to say this is an extremely ignorant statement, but unfortunately it appears that most posters here and Mr. Hoyle agree with you. How is it that both Al Gore and John Kerry received roughly fifty percent of the vote then? Does fifty percent of the voting population reside in urban America? And all of those city-dwellers are well-educated Democrats?

And just for fun, let’s imagine that anyone had said that urban, black Americans are limited educationally, socially, economically and geographically. Would that be OK, or would the majority of you be deeply and irrevocably offended?

I feel like Cassandra here, but Obama’s supporters’ (not Obama’s) air of superiority will guarantee a McCain-Palin inauguration in January.

@gorgona

The hot air has been let out of "the bounce" get ready to get trounced.

klytus:

As a musician, I detest being characterized as out of tune. If you had read my entire post, you'd have seen that I pointed out that Obama's base has been re-energized. When I say base, I refer to those Democrats and activists who are generally pro-labor, pro-civil liberties, anto-interventionist, and pro-choice.

Fact is, Obama's FISA reversal demoralized a whole lot of folks (including myself), as well as his choice of Jason Furman for his top economic advisor, and his bellicose stated positions on Colombia, the death penalty, Israel, and Pakistan. Some would also say that Obama has been backing away from his original pledge to immediately exit Iraq. HOWEVER...

McCain's VP pick still throws things into sharp contrast. Obama would be an infinitely better Commander-in-Chief than McCain.

Well, I looked it up.

Roughly 80% of the US population is urban. So according to most of you, it is safe to say that the current state of our nation and (I fear) the soon-to-be McCain-Palin administration can be blamed on the unwashed 20%.

I hope you can all comfort yourselves with the knowledge that you’re smarter than they are.

Sunday, September 14, 2008 03:34 PM

Klytus

I realize that you are so full of your own enlightenment that you couldn’t possibly be bothered to read (and understand) a post before responding. Had you been just a tad less enlightened you would have understood that I will be voting Obama. (So the trouncing doesn’t apply to me.)

This is why I worry that the Democrats are going to sabotage themselves…again.

Sunday, September 14, 2008 03:38 PM

@Santos and Klytus

And I thought it was just me thinking that ShawnWM had a kissing cousin...

hee hee!

You can tell by the candidate they picked. Not only a cheap crook in an empty suit, but y'know the guy who was going to "bring America together" and started by alienating over half the party and near 100% of the independents.

Watch them now, spittle and spew their toothless garbage projecting their stupidity and racism onto everyone else. Santo is threating starting a civil war (oooooooooooooh!) and Klytus Ostrichian is moving to Canada! (as if they'd have him).

Pathetic.
