His Texas twang, his endless malapropisms and mispronunciations are an act. And it's worked rather well for him.
Many white people will give you the pc answer when asked in a public setting whether they would vote for a black candidate for president, public pressure and the embarassment of being looked at as predudiced, they will always answer YES. It will give you a false picture of what is going to happen in the voting booth! When the curtains are closed!!-On the other side,95% of blacks will say that they will vote for Barak Obama!Almost all will say it is not because HE is black, and they are right,it is because THEY are black!!!
He offers problems? Obama does not offer problems, he addresses problems that need to be addressed that he did not create. Now if you have a mother or a father and you cut yourself and are in danger of bleeding to death and you go to your father and say I may be bleeding to death and your--let's say father--says to you: "You look so handsome today, how could you possibly be bleeding? That's your life's blood, the same blood that's flowing through my veins." Then he goes back to clipping his toenails. Do you feel flattered and satisfied or does your self preservation kick in and you go to your mother who sees and comprehends the situation, addresses it honestly and drives you off to the ER to get you patched up? It's a clumsy analogy but in Obama is your mother and McCain is your detached placating "everything's all right" father. Obama might tell you things are hell but he is more likely to do somethign about it
If Barack spoke in Texas-talk, as W. Bush speaks, these people would like him more. But, luck is a bigger factor.
This article was about underprivileged, salt-o'-the-earth white people. Somebody could write this same article about lucky eastern or suburban-anywhere white folks, and they could come up with the same idiotic quotes.
A guy in a blue blazer in Bloomfield Township might say the same darn thing as that hard-bitten, cranky-talkin' good-ole, bean-cannin' disabled coal miner. And that blue blazer guy is just luckier than ole poopy. He is no smarter. He just has more money, and he's just lucky to have it.
Americans do not believe in luck. If they get something, they imagined they must have earned it, and that they must be smart. But they are wrong. Even when they are lucky, they are wrong.
Maybe we don't like Obama's positions on issues. Maybe he offers problems, but no specific solutions. Maybe we don't look at the world with the same filter as Dan Hoyle. He just can't understand why we don't think like he does.
Yes, maybe that's all true. But you used the word "we", so I assume you're grouping yourself with all those people that said they wouldn't vote for Obama because he's a muslim, or because he's 'not your kinda people'. You stand out in that group, then, in giving rational reasons for your choice, which I'm afraid is not what all of these other people are doing.
Keep in mind, this isn't just posturing with buddies, or having a casual chat with co-workers. A reporter asked these people why they weren't supporting Obama, and a bunch of them all but said "because he is black, and I am uncomfortable with that."
In the problems we're facing.
This article was condescending and sometimes insulting. To determine that anyone doubting Senator Obama is their candidate of choice is a racist is simplistic and mostly wrong.
Senator Obama....
Repeatedly (until last week) says he wants to raise taxes
Shows little to no respect for the military or for the dangerous waters the U.S. swims (think of the European speeches this past summer)
Appears completely naive about the real, not the dramatized, dangers from militant Islamists and now perhaps even Russia
Provided a pretty flip response to a topic about which many Americans hold strong views....when does life start...
Has allowed attacks against Sarah Palin well beyond the very real issue of "Does she have enough experience and toughness?"
Quite literally, threw Hillary under a bus....
Showed disdian for middle Americans whose religion is important to them in a daily way.
There are many reasons at this time to be unsure of Senator Obama...and none of them relate to his race.
Colin Powell simply would not have these problems and last time I checked, he was black. So is Condi Rice and she is repeatedly attacked for everything with no one ever even remarking that there might be racism involved
Get off of it and back to real issues...oh, yeah, and not all Americans living in small towns are stupid nor all city slickers smart...
Many of the posts have tones that will encourage more people NOT TO VOTE for Senator Obama. Now, continuing those tones of insult and disdain...that is stupid if indeed the people writing them are actually Obama supporters.
in an affluent county near Atlanta was followed/tailgated for over 2 miles enroute home from an errand with 2 of her 4 young children in her Honda Odyssey, sporting an Obama sticker, by, in her words, a rich, white man (she is white) who followed just closely enough to insure that she was able to see his middle finger via her rearview/side view mirrors. This happened today. She says she wasn't afraid. My husband is furious. He votes the other way from his wife and daughter. Said this was almost enough to make him switch.
My elderly Mom, suffering from dementia, resides in a nursing home in a small Southern town. One of her sitters (who is black as is the norm there) was a bit fearful when I raised the issue of politics and Dems and Obama. She implied that it might not be a good idea to show one's support for Obama, that is speak out for him. I believe she thinks that retribution (i.e. job security) might be jeopardized.
To Alinford, author of the below:
So, is it more racist that 95% of African Americans are voting for Obama because he is black, or that 15% of Caucasian Americans will not vote for him because he is black?
I simply reply, you are fooling no one but yourself. You have no understanding nor appreciation of the Black experience and history, have you? Blacks are proud of Obama's accomplishment and why shouldn't they be? Was it racist to vote for Bush because he was "someone you could have a beer with?" Presumably you voted for him both times. If so, you owe the rest of us who didn't an apology for the last 4 years at the very least.
To get through the next few weeks, I have volunteered with the local Obama campaign. There is a black lady of my generation (came of age during the 60's) who says that if the country doesn't elect the Dem slate this time, she is done. I have hope, but I also have fear and this is a way to get to Nov. 4 with some degree of equanimity.
