What small-town America is saying about Obama In diners and mobile homes from New Mexico to North Carolina, I listened to working-class people try to make sense of a black president named Barack.

  • Why Republicans don't have to work as hard to appeal.

Uh, duh. there's more of them than anti-war self-purported "liberals".

  • @nananance - tired and lame .

I live in a small town and the people here who won't vote for Obama because he is an African-American would never have voted for a Democrat in the general election.

Nonsense. From Oklahoma to Indiana to New York and Texas, small town America RUSHED and RACED out to meet the Clintons during the primary.

Don't you dare blame them for your stupidity.

  • Other Democrats didn't need your loser condescension

    @Beelyl65

"And in my opinion, it is a losing strategy to give these backward dimwits any time and attention that could be spent addressing people who at least have some capacity for abstract thought."

Franklin Roosevelt had no trouble connecting with small-town voters. Neither did Bill Clinton. Why can't Obama?

  • wasn't davis derided for saying it was a race between personalities?

trust is a major issue with most people when selecting a president...even more so in times like these.

everytime someone, from sen. obama's camp or the news media or a liberal blogger derides the republican party leaders with sneering intellectual superiority rather than balanced disagreement with policy it enforces the masses to believe that is the way you feel about them and to bond more completely with the republican party. we, the masses, have been told for the past two years that questions about sen. obama was off limits as far as his background, his race, his affiliations and his experience and focus was to be on his charismatic PERSONALITY and his ability to present a speech...we're in love with him and you should be too! okay. that's your opinion and you're entitled to it BUT, so are we.

  • What is small-town America saying about Obama

The media including Salon needs to write about something so they write about how people will not vote for a Black man-- they are guessing -- and they are giving people ideas who have only a few ideas in the first place because the media whips up anger and people just want little to do with getting informed and simply shy away from learning anything--- that suits those Republicans just fine-- they want to deal with an ignorant public as much as possible.

Back in February 2008, Iowa voted solidly for Obama but then Hillary talked about are you you ready to make history voting for a Black man or a female? This is not the issue in this election. It is a referendum on the War in Iraq. 2/3 of the people do not approve of this war. That war is the source of much internal needs in this country which go unmet too.

Michael Moore gets a town to "Bowl for obama" and he said it best-- small town USA is ready to vote for Obama-- but it needs active people like Michael Moore and YOU out there to jump start it now that we have 53 days left!!!!!!

  • Anyone monitoring this place?

Hootowl has crossed a few lines of civility, most flagrantly in his/her last post. Could someone please do something about it?

  • SALON: All Obama, all the time, with an occasional hit on Palin...

...but now we know what they're thinking in diners and mobile homes. Can you say yuck?

  • Smart Trumps Stupid Trumps Smart

I have a degree in ad marketing. When in the hell are these Democrats going to learn that selling a president to a specific demographic is no more difficult and in fact, entails the same EXACT tactics as selling a damned loaded Hummer to a neurotic short guy with a small penis?????

I cannot believe that in light of the last two tragic losses and all the money, just DYING to go into this party after the last 8 years, that they haven't had the brains or humility to hire their own "Rove", so to speak. THERE IS NO ROOM LEFT FOR IDEALISM; THE STAKES ARE TOO DIRE. Look, it's a nice fantasy, but there is NO unity in the the party, or they never would have championed a such a high-risk candidate.

Does it have to be that the very idealistic naivety which makes us better than them be the thing which keeps us from ever getting in the White House I fear, again?

  • The 2008 Election and the Democratic Party

I believe Barack Obama is an intelligent, sensitive and caring individual. I have no doubt about his patriotism, loyalty, and earnest desires to see all of us prosper. He has good ideas, and yes, some not so good. That is normal. He has made good sound decisions and some not so good. That is normal too. He may lack experience on the world stage, but then again, what president hasn’t? Who can say what the future will bring? I believe he would be flexible enough in his thinking to adjust to the necessities of whatever problem or crisis might come along. In short, he will probably be a good president – perhaps a great one, although that is usually not known until long after a sitting president has entered the history books. Henry Truman comes to mind.

Still, and sadly, I will not be voting for Barack for president. Not because he’s black, not because he’s not qualified. Not for any reason that has to do with him directly. Simply stated I have become fed up with the viciousness of the extremists, on the right and on the left…but mostly on the left, where I find more hate and vile commentary seems to be coming. I feel that the party of Roosevelt, Truman and Kennedy has been hijacked by fanatics and I can no longer relate to it. I will go my separate way. I wish you well.

  • We're Doomed

After reading this depressing article, all I can think of is, "God, we're doomed".

Forget about Alaska secessionism, where can I sign up for a movement to have the northeast secede from the U.S.? We'll take New York City off your hands, too. That should solve all our problems.

  • High School Education Only?

The following quote made my jaw drop to the floor...I mean really.

"We know Obama's plenty book-smart ... but I liked Harry Truman, the last president to have a simple high school education."

Is this for real? I mean with that said, are these people OK going into surgery with a medical practitioner with a "simple high school education" or getting onto a 747 which was just recently serviced by a mechanic with a "simple high school education"? Is education and training not relevant here?

What the f#@!? Is this really what Obama is up against?
