How is it that a man who is Harvard educated and experienced in community activism can be discounted because of his name and race while everyone gets excited about two people who promise to start wars with Iran and Russia without even finishing the wars in Iraq and Afganistan. How can people continue to support a party who taxes the poor and gives breaks to the rich, a party which erodes our constitutional rights and gives us a vp who has attempted to ban books, and fire the librarian at the local library. These people still refuse to see the loss of sea ice as a result of global warming. (I mean what else could cause the ice to melt?)

The choice here is so easy. But I am so depressed about where this is going, I'm ready to cry. Sure there are unknowns about how Obama will govern, but I can see exactly what we'll get if McCain wins the election and I can tell you now just like I told everyone in 2000, Don't vote republican, it's a big mistake. I fully expect that now, as in 2000 and 2004, few if any will listen to me. I expect that now as then, I'll lose respect from people for saying so. If the world doesn't end in the next four years of republican power, we will certainly be extreemly close. In four years I will definately be saying I told you so. Unless, of course, everyone take the chance of losing the respect of their friends and relatives and reminds them that it was the republican policies of preemtive war against terror, lack of regulation in the housing market, torture and the refusal to work with our allies to build a real coalition and work within the bounds of the UN that has brought us to this low standing in the world. This isn't just the fault of 911 and terrorism, this is plain bad governing and we need to reexamine how we do things. Giving the country to the republicans will not accomplish that. If we can't convince our fellow Americans that the POW/moosetracker combo is the same as having a cowboy in the oval office, it's over, period.

So people who are obvious, total idiots--people who SELF-IDENTIFY as idiots ("I know it sounds stupid, but Barack 'Hussein' Obama?") are poised to define our national priorities once again, it seems. At a certain point these people get what they deserve by voting the way they do.

They're too dim to make the connection between the shuttered storefronts in their downtowns and the giant Wal-Marts down the road, and it's just too taxing on them to figure out that the claims made in a viral e-mail ("Obama is a Muslim! He wants to kill your babies!") are false. So they vote Republican against their own interests. At this point I have zero sympathy for these people. They gave us George Bush, and they just might give us John McCain and Sarah Palin.

What IS tragic is that the rest of the country, and indeed the rest of the world, will suffer unimaginable horrors if McCain and Palin, the king and queen of anti-intellectualism, manage to win the election with the help of these hopeless morons.

I've lived in small white towns all my life, and currently do, and yes, they are filled with dumb, racist people who won't vote for Obama.

You can keep writing all these letters mocking middle America, but the cause was you.

This election mattered/matters.

Democrats had a chance to be in control of the Executive branch and Congress. It was ours to have. And we will lose because of hubris of in the intellectual elite.

You can talk down to all of small town stupid America, but their attitudes are not new or surprising. Did you really believe racism didn't exist? Did you believe that everyone would see past unrelateablity and elect the chosen one?

I have believed from the beginning that this election year we needed a safer bet. (An Aside: who would have thought HRC would have been the safe choice?) Democrats NEEDED to win this election and won't. And all of us enlightened, liberal, open-minded people can talk about the decline of America, but this wasn't a surprise and forcing this candidate on the populous was the real reason we will see 4 more years of the same.

If you wanted a win you should have thought about who was picking the winner.

But I'm guessing you live in a state that is firmly in Obama's category anyway, so how each of these "dimwits" votes is probably a hell of a lot more important than how you will. Then add to the mix the REAL news from this article (which I think is excellent reading by the way) -- namely that many of these dimwits are apparently true "swing voters", meaning they carry double the voting strength of the "binary" dimwit voter who always either votes Republican or stays home on election day. Each vote a swing voter casts FOR McCain is a truly lost potential Obama vote.

By my math, that makes each one of these "dimwits" about 400% more important than you and me in this election. So get the fuck down from your ivory tower, make a contribtuion to Obama's campaign and go out and hug a dimwit today.
