What small-town America is saying about Obama

In diners and mobile homes from New Mexico to North Carolina, I listened to working-class people try to make sense of a black president named Barack.

@Daniel Dvorkin

Great post. Thank you.

"considerable"

Okay, maybe I shouldn't have used that word. "Barack Obama spent a portion of his youth in poverty," how's that?

Because yes, damn it, if your mother has to apply for food stamps to keep you fed, you are poor. You may not be as poor as some other people -- poverty is always relative; most poor people in America are rich by comparison to what passes for the middle class in much of the world -- but you need food stamps, you are not middle class and you are damn sure not rich.

Rich, as in John Sidney McCain III. Who had his Annapolis appointment handed to him on a silver platter because of who his daddy and granddaddy were, who couldn't fly worth a damn and who was only given a flying post because of his lineage, whose incompetent piloting gave him the opportunity for his oh-so-heroic POW experience (after he had already crashed four planes!), who dumped the wife who waited for him through the years of his captivity so he could marry from "comfortably wealthy" up into "obscenely wealthy." Who can't remember how many houses he owns. Who thinks that if you make four million dollars a year, you're middle class.

And yes, any poor or middle-class person who thinks this coddled aristocrat is somehow more like them than a man who worked his way to the top, a true Horatio Alger story of the type conservatives claim to love but clearly loathe (remember what they did to a guy named Clinton?) is beyond hope."

@rv_just_saying

Couldn't agree more. So it bears repeating...

"Challenge to Charlie Gibson

I challenge him to interview Chelsea Clinton and he can do so in an even more intelligent manner.

She experienced her fathers more than 10 years as Governor of Arkansas. His eight years as President. She experienced her mothers 6 years as Senator from the Great State of New York. She just survived the most vicious primary, maybe ever.

Chelsea Clinton is more intelligent, far more well traveled, far more knowable about world affairs, and yes, far more experienced than Mrs. Palin.

I read that again because it's true.

Chelsea Clinton is more intelligent, far more well traveled, far more knowable about world affairs, and yes, far more experienced than Mrs. Palin."

I wouldn't have necessarily phrased things the way this commenter did, but I sure did have the same thoughts and feelings when I was watching the "services forum" tonight with McCain and then Obama.

"I just finished watching the service to america interview type thing. The name is paraphrased. First mccain was on then obama. Mccain was the typical mccain. Of course community organizers are great. Ah what’s her face was just pissed that her experience was dissed. He never said that the snide remarks about service to america were disgusting. I guess he couldn’t unless he disowned his own campaign. Obama got on and I was again amazed at how smart and inspirational he is and what a leader he is. If he was on tv more he'd blow mccain away in this election. Obama is a true leader that inspires and blows the cobwebs out of the minds of old jaded people like myself. JFK though I was a bit young and RFK and MLK were the last ones that made me feel this way. When they were murdered the naiveté was crushed and the ensuing years ground it into bits so small they’re non-existent.

I watched as obama listened to the questioner with all of his attention, his mind working as he took in and understood what the person was asking. This is not some guy that is smart but can’t relate, some arrogant dude that belittles people because they are so stupid. This is a guy who has been there down in the lives we lead, learned, emphasized, and thought of ways to make life better. Sometimes being in the midst of a crappy life is what it takes to see what’s crappy and how you would change it. I’ve been there. I’ve worked at a place where management was intent on screwing you and didn’t know how to manage people. I learned what not to do. Obama has been there down in the trenches, saw and understood what was wrong. Now he’s taking what he learned and what’s to apply it to running this country.

This guy is amazing. I forget how amazing he is when I don’t see him for awhile. Tonight I was reminded in a big way.

Wow……."

Hidden identity

"Charlie Gibson was probably chosen for this first mainstream media interview because he’s a tad more benign than some of the other pitbulls, with and without lipstick or lip gloss, who seem to subscribe to the Barney Frank School of Thought, "

Come on, you really didn't say this did you? "Tad more benign", "Lip gloss" "Barney Frank"????

TAD???? Done deal.

It's OK, you can come out here, as good a place as any.

The insanity here is unbelievable

Daniel Dvorkin wrote: Barak Obama spent a considerable portion of his youth in poverty. He worked his own way to the top.

John McCain -- John Sidney McCain III -- is the son and grandson of admirals. He's American military aristocracy. And he married, as aristocrats often do, into serious money.

Any blue-collar voter who thinks McCain is more "people like us" than Obama has to be, I'm sorry, a complete goddamn moron.

FACT: An entry level military officer makes about $28,000/yr.

FACT: Then they have to work their way UP the ladder (10 pay grades) over YEARS through demonstrated PERFORMANCE on the job.

FACT: No one is military aristrocracy, you don't ascend to an inherited title, you have to earn it as you learn the institution.

So before you go spewing lies, maybe you should do some research and get your facts in place.

Here's another fact for you: BO hasn't the experience and therefore also doesn't have the vaguest notion of how to command a military force or run a Senate committee or manage a business. Now go put on your detective outfit and see if you can find the facts to refute that! I'll bet you can't...

BO's candidacy is a sad commentary on the unrealistic daydreams and outright lies of the insane left in this country. It's really a shame he ruined the possibility for a real choice on a 2 party ticket.
