  • AG experience

I too had experience with the Assemblies of God as a kid. We were taught that AOG theology and ONLY those teachings were the inspired word of God.

In other words, roughly one hundred years ago the creator of the universe decided to use as his spokespeople a small group of poorly educated bigots from the American south.

    On yet another lighter note:

Jesus walks into the temple one day and finds people conducting every sort of personal business. He flys into a rage and upends their tables, scattering money and products, chasing people out the doors and into the streets. He then storms out the front door of the temple not even bothering to shut it, when a beggar sitting at the entrance shouts out, "Hey! Were you born in a barn?"

  • You're missing the point!

This woman's religious viewpoint is very relevant as well as her church's teachings. Some have said that this denomination has been around for decades with no harm. This is only true in that they have had no power to enact what they perceive as the outworking of bible prophesy. They want the war in the "WAR TO END ALL WARS" in the Middle East which will propell Jesus to come and get his faithful followers (The Rapture)leaving the rest of mankind to die in the battle of the end times. THIS IS THE FEAR; THAT MS. PALIN WILL FEEL THAT SHE IS THE INSTRUMENT TO BRING THIS ABOUT! The question she needs to answer is will she use her power to promote peace of assist in creating conditions for the Rapture? You already know the answer. She has already stated/prayed that the war in Iraq be part of God's plan. The answer to that question should tell you that we are in a world of hurt!

  • I have been searching the Salon archives in vain... Where can I find the article that seriously questions what Minneapolis muslims (Rep. Keith Ellison) believe?

    Anybody?

  • Didn't Nostradamus and the Myans predict

that the world would end in 2012? Is Sarah Palin the Anti-Christ in drag, or is she just running as his partner?

  • Small town values

I do not understand how anyone can regard lieutenant governor of Alaska as a "national office," as the author apparently does.

The town Ms. Palin served (using the word guardedly) as mayor had fewer people than the small coastal California town where I grew up. Our mayor worked three afternoons a week and did a pretty good job, in between running her real estate business. I cannot imagine being mayor of Wasila was a bigger job. Well, to be fair, our mayor didn't try to impose censorship on our local library or fire the librarian. That might have occupied a little more of Ms. Palin's time.

I try to imagine our former mayor as vice president of the United States and kind of seize up mentally, although I can say unequivocally that I'd rather have her than Palin any day of any week.

  • Vulcanrider

I've never seen any video of Barack Obama preaching from the altar. Sarah Palin uses the church as her political pulpit and the church uses her as their puppet. It's a fair trade as long as she stays in Alaska and the citizens of that state are Ok with it. I don't live there and I'm not Ok with it.

  • SHUT UP ALREADY!

I got news for you sister. The churches that almost ALL OF US grew up in have preached the most extreme religious views in the nation. You think the jews, catholics, and regular mainland Baptist churches, freewill baptists, and so on have not contributed to the "hate, intolerance, and bigotry" market?

Of course they have! And the more you get on Palin's ass about stuff, the better she polls. You might want to start talking about the issues.

  • Honest Abe

When Palin said "That's what we have to make sure that we are praying for -- that there is a plan and that that plan is God's plan," she was basically echoing the words of Lincoln, who said "Let us not pray that God is on our side, let us pray that we are on God's side"

Palin is evil and must be stopped, but the line in question is actually quite acceptable.

  • AG exp./and clarify initial post

Rupert, I don't understand why you're calling me out. I was quite careful to accurately describe my (limited) experience with an AG church and to keep my interpretation to a minimum. I even mentioned that I did not know whether this particular church was representative of the whole denomination. Though other posters here tell quite similar stories.

I don't know what goes on in a mosque or a synagogue; I've never been to either.

My feeling is, as others have stated, that I don't care which religion a candidate practices- So long as they don't try to push it on me, my children, neighbors, or make it national policy.

No reasonable person could argue that there has not been a clear trend in this country towards the elevation of (particularly fundie Christian) viewpoints in the political discourse. BTW a trend opposed to every other developed country where religion is on the wane. Witness the presidential primary debates where the candidates had to jump through hoops to answer religious questions. Sometimes with laughable disconnect. Pious Rudy Giuliani anyone?

I told you what I saw going on there, hoping you would draw your own conclusions. I know I've reached mine.

  • Oh, my

Attacke her church and religious beliefs. I guess if it's ok for Sean Hannity, it's ok for Salon. But wait, doesn't Salon decry Sean Hannity's methods? I guess not...

  • Poco

Attacke her church and religious beliefs. I guess if it's ok for Sean Hannity, it's ok for Salon. But wait, doesn't Salon decry Sean Hannity's methods?

The difference is that Salon's attacks are based on the truth, whereas Hannity's are based on lies.

It just figures that you couldn't tell the diffence, pub.

  • Palin a Pentecostal? Oh, my dear me, whatever shall we do?

Enough with the ridiculous phoney hand-wringing and religion-based smear campaigns against Sarah Palin. Salon has REALLY hit rock bottom with these essays.

  • Palin's church vs. government

I've ben trying to get a larger context of where Republican Vice Presidential nominee Sarah Palin is coming from and why the "Religious Right" who weren't previously impressed with John McCain are so very enthused about her. (Yeah, yeah, some women identify with her and some men are fantasizing... I mean, besides that.) Her religious affiliation is the key, and the larger, underlying theme is "dominionism."

One of the declared aims of the Dominionists is the overthrow of the division between Church and State: Biblical law would be the law of the land.

A group called Theocracy Watch has been tracking the political influence of the Dominionists - you can find more about this at

    http://www.theocracywatch.org/

    An extract from Theocracy Watch:

“...The theocratic right seeks to establish dominion, or control over society in the name of God...

“Twenty-five years ago, dominionists targeted the Republican Party as the vehicle through which they could advance their agenda. At the same time, a small group of Republican strategists targeted fundamentalist, Pentecostal and charismatic churches to expand the base of the Republican Party. This web site is not about traditional Republicans or conservative Christians. It is about the manipulation of people of a certain faith for political power. It is about the rise of dominionists in the U.S. federal government...

"...The American people need to maintain vigilance and understand the history of how dominionists came to political power. And we need to embrace democracy with a passion -- for it was voter apathy that allowed leaders like Pat Robertson to get so many dominionists elected to Congress in the first place...

"...Today's hard right seeks total dominion. It's packing the courts and rigging the rules. The target is not the Democrats but democracy itself..."

One heartbeat from the president? No thanks.
