I missed Romney's speech - thank goodness - but had the bad luck to see Guiliani.
His speech was pretty much the definition of "smarmy." He sounded like the teacher's pet that all of the regular kids wanted to bash in the hallway between classes.
My favorite line from his diatribe: "When I was a prosecutor, I learned that when the facts don't fit - change the facts." In other words . . . lie. That is exactly what he did last night. It was nice to see him, John McCain and their two diabolical looking trophy wives smirking at his "jokes" about Obama, and his comparisons between Obama and Palin. In Republican World, not only are they equal - Palin is BETTER than Obama.
As much as I would like to, I won't say what impressions I get from Ms. Palin, but suffice it to say that I do not perceive her as Mr. Obama's equal, and the fact that she would join in a lie as outrageous as the one being told by the Republicans - namely that she is ready to be President of the United States - pretty much proves it.
My main problem with the Republicans in general, and the McCain campaign in particular, is that they seem to want to pretend that they had nothing to do with the last eight years - to my mind eight of the most shameful years in American political history - and act as though Barack Obama and John McCain are just two differing agents of change, and that all we're really talking about is methods and experience.
That is a load of crap. If I were Obama, I would start every speech with a list: Iraq,Guantanamo, domestic wiretapping at an unprecedented rate, Katrina, Alberto Gonzalez, Colin Powell quits in disgust (even though he didn't say so), $4 gas, Enron, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, Bear Stearns . . . do I really need to go on?
If the Democrats were running a monkey, I'd still say "Throw the bastards out," but since they're running one of the best-qualified, most charismatic candidates ever to seek the office, this is pretty much a no-brainer.
