McCain: No, really, we vetted her! As revelations about Sarah Palin mount, the McCain team scrambles to dispel reports that they didn't know what they were getting into.

  • JUST TO BE CLEAR

    SETTING THE RECORD STRAIGHT

Apparently Sarah Pawlenty was in fact vetted in some detail a while back in North Hollywood by L. Ron Hubbard’s 3rd cousin’s offshoot “Church of Palintology,” using a technological variant of Dianetics Analysis:

  • PLEASE GIVE A WARM REPUBLICAN WELCOME

TO THE YOUNG MAN HAVING SEX WITH THE VICE-PRESIDENTIAL NOMINEE'S DAUGHTER!

  • Not getting too excited

First Palin was a "stroke of genius" pick for McCain's VP, energizing the base and motivating recalcitrant conservatives to get off their butts and start working hard for their candidate. Seems I read that line a mere 72 hours ago, and it sent a foreboding shiver down my spine, till I realized, "Wait, it's still just the end of August, there's a long ways to go."

Now the pick's going down in flames -- kinda sorta -- and instead of rubbing my hands with glee and waiting for Palin and McCain to shrivel up and vanish before my very eyes, I'm falling back on the same realization. This is a close race now, and it's going to be a close race whether McCain has Palin at his side or Dwight D. Eisenhower or Daffy Duck. The reason is simple: 95% of the country is already decided, loathes the other party, and is about as polarized as it can possibly be. The other 5% are apparently not paying attention, and probably won't for quite some time yet.

  • Yeah, but...

The Republicans love her. The huntin' and fishin' and weldin' and fornicatin' resonate very well in our American echo chamber. If McCain really picked her on purpose, McCain is a genius. Let's see how she plays out.

  • This election concerns issues, not personalities

Please focus on the issues, and not on the Palin personality--assuming that you know what the issues are.

  • Virtual Vet

John McCain has proved his credentials as a true fiscal conservative. Just think of all the money he saved on long-distance calls to Alaska.

  • WHAT THE PHO??

Is there really anything else to be said?

  • If they Knew.......

If both McCain and Palin knew that Bristol was pregnant before Palin was selected as the VP candidate, then they both decided to turn her into the most famous pregnant teenager in America-on purpose.

In what universe is this a compassionate considered idea? Family values, my ass.

  • ...but she is a mother, a reformer with executive experience....

What!? How can you doubt the word of a maverick reformer like John McCain?

Heck, I've been watching the RNC for like an hour and everyone being interviewed is completely unbiased and without prior instructions and speaking of their own free will saying that he vetted her...you know, like the 'maverick' that he is...a real reforming reformer...mother...executive...maverick. Maverick, hockey mom! Reformer maverick reformer, hockey mom executive mother maverick POW reformer PTA executive....bzzzz

It's much better than Cats! I'm going to see her again and again and again.... Oops, wrong comedy show.

  • Vetting

The McCain vetting of Palin reminds me of something that happened awhile back in West Virginia. The McCain campaign claimed it had been endorsed by a major Democrat. The major Democrat turned out to be a man known here as Icky Frye. Mr. Frye married an immigrant looking for citizenship. She, a fairly attractive woman, got a job in state government and then had an affair with Gov. Bob Wise. Mr. Frye, who is, let us say kindly, a bit disheveled as well as a loose cannon, decided to run for governor to get revenge on Mr. Wise (who has since left politics). Icky Frye, the prominent Democrat, got one or two percent of the vote. He is considered a joke. This is Sen. McCain's prominent supporter.

I'd say the same people who vetted Icky Frye vetted Sarah Palin.

  • Amusing

I actually doubt that McCain knew about Miss Bristol's very delicate condition. Look at the actual video of the announcement, McCain looking Bristol up and down with wide eyes, McCain's daughter standing there staring at her.

If you really want to know about what is going on in small towns, you don't consult official sources, you find the best gossip in town. I can go back to my mother's small town and know everything that is going on within an hour just by keeping my mouth shut. The neighbor lady who lives down the street keeps an eye on my elderly mother for me ... well not just that ... she keeps an eye on everybody.

Also, small town newspapers are notorious for discretion. They don't even print all the crimes. If they offend enough readers, they will soon be out of business.

I can't help but be amused by the idea of a bunch of smartass lawyers utterly fooled.

I think Sarah Palin is some ambitious piece of work. Damn! I almost admire her.

  • @ Xlp Thlplylp

I know that one of the issues is about the kind of judgment each candidate has. Biden is yet another example of Obama's good judgment and Palin is yet another example of McCain's poor judgment.

  • two things.

    1) There's an awful lot of Republicans named "Tucker," aren't there. Two prominent ones on this campaign alone!

    2) I don't think Palin will be withdrawn as the VP pick for a number of reasons. Even as more and more disturbing things come out, such as the recent Huffington Post story, complete with video, about her extremely right-wing Christian views (everything she wants, apparently, is nothing less than the Will of God, and she actually told a group of kids freshly trained to be more or less missionaries that they needed to get to work converting everyone in the state) and her ultra militant pastor, who says that disagreeing with the President and with the pastor means someone will go to hell. Ahhh.

  • 20 year old DUI

If the best we can come up with is her husband's 20 year old DUI then she ought to sail through this who thing without any trouble.

Instead of talking about that the focus ought to be on her apparent vindictiveness and crazy right wing christian views. The attacks should be on her policies. Not on her family struggles.

The scary thing is that people seem to have swallowed McCain's story about how great she is. Watching tonight's BBC news was very disheartening. As long as people don't bother to do any critical thinking or research we are doomed. The uninformed electorate in this country is leading us straight down the drain.
