First of all, Mrs. Palin's lack of cultural and international nouse is exposed when she allowed her daughter to be named Bristol, showing that she was unaware that Bristols is British rhyming slang for 'breasts'. (Bristol cities = titties). Of course, she may just have named her daughter after that fair city which built its wealth largely on the slave trade.
Second of all, it is the Republican party and its religious toadies, such Rick Warren who have striven mightily to make the General Election a referendum on abortion.
Now we have an opportunity to see that the Palin family is right in the thick of experiencing those typical American family dramas, like the pregnant women in her forties deciding whether to bear a child with Down syndrome, and the teenage daughter who gets knocked up just when she should be filing college applications.
The Palins have made their decisions based on their beliefs, and have stuck to their guns, shotgun wedding and all.
This is good. It is healthy for the nation to discuss these subjects and for Mrs Palin to take the lead. Many Republicans wanted a referendum on abortion. They can have one. Maybe they will win, maybe they won't, but the result may help to start the process of laying this topic to rest.
Now that she has started the process, Mrs. Palin may as well publish her medical records. We the people have a right to know about the health of the woman who may be the next President but one, and Trig has the potential to be the first Down Syndrome child to grow up in the White House which would raise the profile of the condition exponentially.
[It seems likely to me that the child Trig is her natural child, as Down syndrome births are statistically much commoner for older mothers.]
