  • Hey Salon

You guys reading these posts? Can you see now how deep the troll infestation has gotten?

Can you see now how something needs to be done to excise those whose only goal in life is apparently to cause strife?

Can you see now that it hasn't just been mean Obama supporters causing discord? That those who are genuine are acting...in a genuine fashion?

Remember when you took the much appreciated step of banning anonymous postings? Well clearly that only superficially fixed the problem, the infestation runs deep (and I continue to believe that your integrity is being compromised by it, an interactive online community is only as good as its community)

please pay close attention to this thread Salon, for here is where one can see the true colours of those who post here.

    thank you

  • For Joan, to all fellow subscribers and not "@" anyone

Joan, simple thank you. Never mind the inevitable blogosphere right to sniping. Not right this minute, any way. I just want to repeat a heartfelt thank you. I have been dreading the media deluge from _both_ political party conventions. Almost eighty years old, I've watched more and more of my political allies [whatever "party" affiliation ... or, in some instances -- believe it or not?! ;-) none (!!)] ?"slip this mortal coil" and this morning ... considering the relatively-speaking mundane? trivial? things on my To Do list for today, was actually contemplating ducking out of all of them in order to join the RC church and ask for a spiritual mentor to my Last Rites. [He's a really interesting sounding man, by the way! ;-)] So, thank you, Joan Walsh. For this particular article and for all the work that you and so many people do to keep Salon.com going, alive and vital.

Fellow subscribers, that goes for you too. At the moment I checked in, letters from a full 80 of you were already posted. I'm going to do the best I can to read them all before I clutter up space with another post. All of you have helped me a lot with my need to understand (what I haven't yet seen as a major reader-response available thread here at Salon) the generational divide among us all -- as to how we see things. I need to understand that because though I don't know whether "the meek shall inherit the earth", I know that at my age what I personally need to prepare for is what non-earth I must be prepared to inherit ... and how to assign my priorities for that ... while also caring so much about "this earth" and the people (all of you!) younger'n me who populate it.

But meanwhile, I woke up this morning, and I came to my computer. And so, of course, I found the media coverage -- complete with photos -- of Hillary's talk. So far, Joan, yours has been the most thoughtful (and for me, helpful).

[I shouldn't bother all of you by posting this, but -- as my oldest stepson used to like to say: wotthehey]

    ?! ;-)

  • right on hillary! now please help to bring all those " hillary for mc coathanger" women back before they sell their reporductive, etc rights to mr. repug! and alito!

I think what hillary did last night at the convention was just what was needed. unfortunately, this freaking country seems to be on a two party election system; or else I'd offer the suggestion for those STUPID, DUMB BITCHES at hillary voters for mc jerko [www.hillaryvotersformccain.org]; at least choose nader-Ind., or [ is she still running?] cynthia mc kinney-Green![ ron paul-Repug.; may not be bad, but still he is pro-life, he claims; and NO health care for all.]

with that, I'll say what she does. OBAMA IS IT! HE IS THE " LIGHT,TRUTH,THE WAY" if we are ever to beat john mc fuckhead this november. he may be corporate funded, but he at least offers the only hope from a " bush-mc bush" america! [ so was hillary- only main difference was her also being funded by emily's list-feminist group- besides the other 400 corporations they both had individual " donations" from the employees at!]

  • Thanks Joan

I'm hoping we get at least two updates from you on the atmosphere out there!

reading the media account of Hillary's speech has ME scratching my head...It's just incredible how addicted people are to the insidious narrative. Open Salon's GOP blogger, Mortimer Smyth, had a unique take from the right:

    http://open.salon.com/content.php?cid=12802

But this is getting out of hand. Has anybody heard how Brooks commented on Clinton's speech?

  • I thought the speech was good

On a side note: I am surprised at home few of my friends or family know what a PUMA is. It leads me to believe that only us hyper-aware folks know or care.

Senator Clinton's speech worked well because it appeals to both her supporters and the average television viewer. I think we shoudl all follow her advice and get to work defeating McCain.

  • Hillary left out one line

As an orator, Hillary's no JFK, Reagan or Obama. It was still a good speech.

But why, o why couldn't she have acknowledged that nobody stole the nomination from her. If only she could have brought herself to say: "Sen. Obama beat me, fair and square."

Judging by Internet comments from her supporters, there remains much resentment that Obama, the party and/or the media conspired to take away the prize that was rightfully hers.

We will never know how Hillary Clinton would have fared in November, just as we'll never know how John McCain or Bill Bradley would have matched up in 2000 (or RFK and Mitt Romney's dad in 1968). That's politics, and the Clintons have been playing this game for a long time.

  • Easy

But why, o why couldn't she have acknowledged that nobody stole the nomination from her.

    because it isn't true.

This has been today's edition of simple answers to stupid questions.

  • Tough, gracious, and smart not to "undo" previous criticisms

I loved Hillary's speech. While I am a former supporter who is equally excited about voting for Barack Obama, I do have some lingering hard feelings about the way she was treated by the media. Last night proved again that Hillary is tough as nails and that her commitment goes beyond her own personal ambition. She has suffered what must be an incredibly painful experience (the narrowest loss in the highest voting primary ever) with enormous grace and magnanimity.

I have to disagree with the Republican-pushed notion that Hillary didn't do enough to counter her earlier criticisms of Obama's qualifications and readiness. She gave an unequivocal endorsement of Obama and a very clear directive to her supporters to vote for him. Had she tried to directly "undo" previous criticisms, the media commentary on the speech would be full of nothing but continuous replays of those earlier comments - comparing what she said before vs. now and questioning her sincerity. This would NOT have been helpful to Obama. He and others will make a strong case that he is ready to lead.
