Isn't she lovely? In her prime-time speech Monday, Michelle Obama foiled her harshest detractors and perhaps even won over Middle America.

  • @wychwood

Obama called his wife "cute." Oh, how horrid. Not. OTOH I found McCain's joking encouragement to his 50 plus yr old wife to enter into a topless pageant a pathetic pander that pimped out his grandmom wife to get a few laughs from a bunch of drunks. Yeah, shame on Obama.

  • Elvis was there too "liitle sister, don't you kiss me once, say it's very nice and then run"....

The grave-robbing continues....... MLK, JFK and now Jacqueline Bouvier-Knnedy who aren't being allowed to rest in peace. Edward Kennedy has certainly got plenty of mileage out of the careers of his two more talented brothers. The Hero of Chappaquidick is probably a feminist icon and egalatarians must be pleased that the inquest into the death of a young woman was held behind closed doors. What age would Mary Jo be now if only that cowardly roisterer had saved her as he saved himself?

Michelle Obama's "peacock green" dress was lovely and the colour was totally appropriate, she oozed charm from every pore and her wig was top-quality. Most of the wigs and hair extension worn by afflent western women are made from the hair shorn from poor Indian girls living in villages and willing to sacrifice their beautiful glossy hair for badly-needed money. What exactly does the Democratic Party stand for these days?

  • "Little sister, don't you kiss me once or twice,

say it's very nice and then run...."

  • Correction:

"affluent". It must be all that bourbon and beer I swill for breakfast.

  • @redshooz

redshooz: "The song used to introduce Mrs. Obama was not "Isn't She Lovely." It was "I Was Made To Love Her"---both written by Stevie Wonder."

Rebecca Traister correctly stated that the song playing after the speech was "Isn't She Lovely."

  • @AlecsMom re: Wychwood

AlecsMom: "@wychwood - Obama called his wife "cute." Oh, how horrid. Not."

I agree. Just for sake of further argument: When Obama said "cute" he was referring to Michelle and his two daughters, all three, standing together. There is no way that Obama's use of "cute" could or should be interpreted as being belittling or something.

  • Is this really going to work?

I thought Michelle Obama did well. I like a lot of what she and Barrack Obama say. So why do I feel depressed?

But...it is easy to remain cynical. It's risky to hope. I hate being manipulated, like when I find myself weeping uncontrollably during a TV commercial. We are all bombarded with messages that try to sell us something. The fact that I cannot control my response is disturbing.

I remember the same euphoria after the 2004 Convention. I hear the same words. I have the same sick feeling. The "we are sorry" website, addressed to the rest of the world in 2004, is haunting me.

I'll vote for Obama anyway. But I understand the doubts. Maybe some Obama supporters can explain why they are so sure about him, other than the obvious that McCain would be a lot worse.

(FYI, I have not read the other PUMA article by R. Traister yet.)

  • @maureenodonnell

Maureen: "The grave-robbing continues....... MLK, JFK and now Jacqueline Bouvier-Knnedy who aren't being allowed to rest in peace."

Your premise here is that nobody should make reference to historical figures while making speeches. Your premise is false, and the falseness is futher compounded by the fact that this is, in fact, an event with the potential to make further history.

maureenodonnell: "Edward Kennedy has certainly got plenty of mileage out of the careers of his two more talented brothers."

So you find it sporting to unleash the usual anti-Kennedy smears, do you? It's not as though we haven't all heard them before. I'll bet you fancy yourself "shocking." But you're just another predictable tosser.

maureen: "Michelle Obama's "peacock green" dress was lovely and the colour was totally appropriate, she oozed charm from every pore and her wig was top-quality."

You've got a wig made out of big strands of Ugly.

Who are you addressing? Why the snootiness? As for Obama bringing back hope and honor, you seem to have missed the point. The point isn't that Obama is perfect or that he's going to reform everything to some Platonic ideal. The point is that the U.S. has been run by a corrupt set of jackals for the past 8 years and we're hungry for a leader who doesn't completely suck. The low-suckage Obama could just be that leader. We're not asking for much here. I'm not sure what Orwell has to do with anything, though I am sure it makes you feel smart to make a British literary reference.

According to Obama the jackals have been around for "28" years, not 8...

  • She connected with at least one person...

    my wife.

There were clear parallels between them, we are both children of working class parents who put themselves through college, my wife holds a master's degree and was working at an Ivy League teaching and research hospital doing some cutting edge stuff in stent treatments when she became pregnant with kids three and four, yeah, twins. And though I offered to be Mr. Mom we both knew the reality was that I made more money and got better raises in my position than she did in health care.

And so she definitely connected with Michelle last night in the sense that she is a professional and intelligent woman but she is not solely defined by "what" she does but she is as complex as any other person and defined by a whole series of roles, mother to our four kids, wife and partner with me, daughter and sister and Ivy League educated health care provider. (She's back to part-time work and I think she finds this the most fulfilling period of her life, as she can have a firm ground in both roles, mother and professional).

I find it odd that some of the "feminist" posting to this story rail at Michelle for defining herself as such, or suggesting that it was all political theater (undoubtedly some was) but do you not think that she takes pride in her other roles? But I didn't get the impression that she plays some sort of Stepford Wife to Obama's 'bringing home the bacon" male role. I saw them, as my wife and I see ourselves, as partners, with shared goals which involves both our careers and our family.

I think Michelle gave the perfect speech needed tonight to show her, yes, feminine side and to connect with the woman of America. As for what kind of first lady she will make, I'm thinking the elegance and grace of Jackie Kennedy combined with the intelligence of a Hillary Clinton and a bit of the tenacity of Nancy Reagan. She'll be fine.
