Isn't she lovely? In her prime-time speech Monday, Michelle Obama foiled her harshest detractors and perhaps even won over Middle America.

  • actually, that is not what Chris Rock said, bringback...

    affirmative action

I was never comfortable with it, didn't like it 30 years ago and don't like it now. But I can't help but think about what Chris Rock said: ".. affirmative action is like being sent to college by the Uncle that molested you..".

    -- bringbackmalcolm

Chris Rock made that funny comment about how African Americans often feel about living in the United States.

We love it, but it does have a history that you all love to gloss over.

  • @AKASmith

Something has always told me that you were left feeling uncomfortable about the colored version of Pleasantville. But I don't live in Pleasantville, I live in a neighborhood comrpised of people born here, and some pretty fresh off the boat, and I assure you, if I had your narrowness of mind, I WOULD despair of any and all hope.

  • Klytus, is that supposed to be a letter?

Poor soul, can't you do any better?

  • @maureen

I only invest in the best.

    Is the best you attach

    Your chicken scratch

    From the booby hatch?

  • @ buck mulligan

You know who AA hurts the most? Asians and Jews. Do you think its fair that asian and jewish students with top scores get rejected from schools so that lesser qualified students can take their place? It's totally racist and wrong.

Nope, it's the affirmative action for white legacies http://www.boston.com/ae/books/articles/2006/10/25/detailing_bias_in_college_admissions/ that hurt jews and asians. You know, like our dear leader in the white house now. There's affirmative action for geography. If you're a white kid living in Cambridge getting stellar grades and perfect SATs, you have less of a chance to go to Harvard than some white farmboy from Montana with lower grades and SATs. But no one ever calls that affirmative action.

And guess what, at Berkeley and Stanford, white kids with lower SATs and gpas get in before the Asians kids with better grades. Is that not affirmative action for whites? Oh but the same people who trash AA for Latinos and blacks say Asians (it used to be Jews) aren't as "well-rounded".

And because *boys* are doing not as well as girls, there's a growing affirmative action effort for them too.

  • White bra-strap showing on left arm?

Not sure, could have been a reflection, rather than a bra-strap. Do African-American women even wear white bras?

Point Two: Early on in the the speech, she said something about, "..me and my brother." She should have said, "...my brither and me." However, many Americans will criticize her, because they believe mistakenly that everybody needs to say, "...and I."

They are wrong, but in their psilly psuedo middle-American grammatical context, they will fault her.

[Can't read all the posts... Sorry! If this is repeat, sorry!]

  • She did very well

She put her case before her party and was OUTSTANDING. I want Obama to win and what better supporter than his very smart, engaging, attractive, wife who appeared to have trained well to play the role of first lady with kids. She is as American as apple pie and proved it. Coming from where she came in Chicago and from hard working parents, she has done very well. We should be quite proud that we have this kind of talent and courage in our midst. We are living great history for our own kids and country.

  • Buck is not an attorney

He doesn't reason like someone who has had a sniff of a law book. I'm calling BS on that fraud.

  • "Michelle Obama foiled her harshest detractors"?

Michelle Obama did a beautiful, brilliant job last night.

But I know for sure that one of her detractors wasn't foiled.

Our local paper's website here in Lubbock hosts several blogs, including that of a very rightwing retired retina surgeon and bloviator extraordinaire, Donald May.

Boy, was he not foiled by Michelle Obama's speech. Read this. It's a hoot, actually.

  • Strong

I saw strength and tremendous grace.

Good god, it's a mistake to be offended by "lovely."

She WAS lovely. HE's lovely too! And not only did he call her "cute" but she called him "handsome." What a drag...happy loving sexuality in the White House. Horrors!

She did a tremendous job. Sure, theater. SO WHAT.

I hazard that neither Barack nor Michelle Obama are perfect human beings.

For anyone, anyone, to hesitate even a nanosecond before choosing Obama in the voting booth, is insanity.

He's not the Messiah. But he isn't a crazed bully zealot who would happily drag the entire planet over the brink, either.

Give him a chance to do what he can, and let's put our own shoulders to the wheel and help.

  • Timbuktom, The British queen, Elizbeth 11, gives a speech to her subjects at Christmas which used to begin with "My husband and I"

but now I've learned that Michelle Obama knows more about English grammar than any queen. Klytus regards the dromedary as superior to the bactrian camel (the Asian camel with two humps) and,, if I ruled the world, every day would be the first day of spring. This is such a stimulating forum that the Russians must be quaking in their shoes while an international crisis is developing in Georgia (s.e.Europe). Maybe Putin has a touching personal story to tell but, if he has, he's not unloading it on the world.

  • @maureen

More confused musings from psych unit 338? Napoleon is kinda cool, but maureen is odonnell the great!

  • Michelle and Hillary

    Michelle was terrific.

Tonight Hillary speaks. Given previews in the news of her speech's content, I hope her supporters really listen to and heed what she has to say.

  • @maureen

The vast majority of U.S. citizens--in particular, those over the age of 40 or so--do not need you to educate us on the Kennedy legacy (the good, the bad, and the ugly). I can't think of any person hailed in any arena, political or otherwise, for legitimate accomplishments, whose legacy is perfect. Even Mother Theresa was trashed by Penn and Teller.

  • The world and its history according to maureen

    A paranoid schizophenic's wandering dream.

  • Gehgoeson, a little off-message, aren't you, with Barack claiming that he's a citizen of the world.

You write about two unknowns (outside the USA) who trashed a little old nun, Mother Theresa. I know about plummy-voiced Hitchens but he's no great shakes either.

I can't see what point you're trying to make although, of course, I know that you're part of THE ONSLAUGHT. Maybe you're suggesting that Mother Theresa made loadsamoney during Prohibition, maybe you're hinting that she was a Nazi-appeaser just like good old Joseph, or, such is the cryptic nature of your comment, you're suggesting that she went out one night with a young woman, for some fun and frolics, and left her to drown when the car ran off the road. The Keenedys are fakes and so is Joe Biden. I don't believe the little Albanian nun, Mother Theresa, was.
