Isn't she lovely? In her prime-time speech Monday, Michelle Obama foiled her harshest detractors and perhaps even won over Middle America.

  • Feminism thy name is Michelle

The respondents and parts of this article that cast this "lovely Michelle" in some kind of opposition to the ambitious high achiever, as if these are permanent "either-or" kind of propositions, are part of an old feminist dynamic that is dying.

Michelle is incredibly bright and talented. Michelle is a fighter. Michelle can make a lot of money. Michelle can wrap a crowd around her finger. Michelle is a mother. Michelle quit work to stay home and bake cookies and instill her children with good values. Michelle kicks ass. Michelle is kind of hot.

People who don't believe in the idea of these kinds of combinations --or who don't believe they can be authentic-- still force women into boxes. The article, while favorable, has a clear flavor of "this is what Michelle pretended to be to win over the regular white people, how clever." Maybe this is what Michelle is? Or is that just not possible in your world?

  • Buckface...what is your accomplishment?

You are another one who needs to fleck off already. You are a racist dimwit. I am sick to death of people like you - bitter, miserable, jealous losers who do nothing all day but sit on a board, typing jackass commentary that they would never say to someone's face. Affirmative action, huh? What the fuck do you know about accomplishing anything worthwhile? That Senator Obama would want to run for president in a country with idiots like you in it is a miracle.

  • @labnews63

why is it racist to dislike affirmative action? affirmative action is what is racist.

Talks about the former pastor of the Obamas as unpatriotic because of his harsh comments about America. But what he left out was this was the same man who did two tours in Vietnam while Bush,Cheney and Limbaugh dodged their duty.

The church she attended provides housing for hundreds of homeless, provides scholorships for hundreds of students to go to college, feeds thousands in its food program;helps with the elderly and has a re-entry program for man and women getting out of prison. Many in his congregation have gone to Iraq to fight. Wow how unpatriotic can you get.

Not one of the members of Obama's former church has ever bombed a government building destroying millions in property and killing 168 men, women and children like right wingers. Not one of his members has ever bombed a clinic killing women because they did not agree with their stance on abortion rights like right wingers. Not one of his members has ever threatned to kill McCain like right wingers did against Sen. Obama.

It is amazing how whites view blacks as unpatriotic just because they don't agree with certain views but never use those same adjectives when it comes to destructive actions by whites. Look at the Obama's actions. They have followed the rules. They are law abiding. They pay their taxes. They give to charity and have helped pass laws to help our men and women who are coming back home from war.

Again Rev. Wright did two tours of duty in Vietnam I think he as a right to voice his opinion.

My only disagreement with you is that I did think it was a great speech, given the type of speech it was and everything she needed to do with it (as I outlined in my last post). She very much exceeded my expectations. The speech was well-crafted and delivered, moving and inspiring, and it hit all the right emotional notes without becoming lugubrious. She has a gift for oratory that could challenge her husband's.

She also looked smashing, which, whether you're male or female, in our image-obsessed culture means a lot. For those who might consider that a sexist comment, just think for a minute about the first televised Nixon-Kennedy debate in 1960 and how much of an impact their different appearances made. Get ready for a similar juxtaposition in the debates this year. Good thing for McCain that the make-up arts for TV have advanced so dramatically since then!

  • LABC63 and the very same to you. You've taken longer in your foul-mouthed tirade than

any "long-winded" posts I've sent today. I wouldn't think you have any medical qualifications, judging on the standard of your language and other obvious deficiencies, so I merely smile at your odium. Perhaps you should consider seeing an oral hygienist.

  • Damn BucK

Did you say the same thing about Bush. Talk about affirmative-action. He was admitted on a Legacy program. His grades were not great either. You know as I do he can't string to together two sentences. What merit did George Bush have to be President. MOst of the business he ran went under. That dummy traded one of the best baseball players when he owned the Rangers.

Did you say the same thing about "Brownie?" Bush appointed a man that was judging horse shows to head FEMA. Talk about affirmative-action. Now we find out that Ms. Goodling was not hiring people based on qualifications to be attorney-generals, she was hiring them on their political beliefs.

Don't even go their on that affirmative-action crap. We have seen the last 8 years that most of the white boys in office are incompetent and only got where they are because people vote for people that they feel comfortable with.

Alright! It's a free for all and the trolls are present. A little intelligent discussion manages to occur regardless. The below is neither, really, but:

I thought Michelle did alright- It was a good introduction to the nation at large, she is likeable and dare I say it, cute!

There wasn't a whole lot of substance to any of it, but these conventions are strictly show-biz because of both the format and fact that the average American voter doesn't want to be befuddled with issues or policy.

I'm looking forward to Biden talking. He seems like just the junkyard dog the too-nice Democrats are going to need in order to remind us what a mess the Busheviks have made of this country, and that McCain intends on continuing Bush's agenda of running this country into the ground.

I don't believe that Obama is a messiah, but I know he won't be entering office looking to invade somebody in order to burnish either his or America's macho credentials. This is hope enough for now.

The GOP is the party of hatred, xenophobia and despair- but to their credit they make absolutely no bones about it. I eagerly look forward to their convention, the speech from McCain's trophy wife, and how the press is going to spin it. Given that McCain has to run against Bush's record after adopting his methods and rubberstamping his policies is going to make for some interesting contortions for both him and his press apologists.
