I just hope Middle America isn't anything like the latrine of maureen. Keep smokin' that hazey hobbit herb, and keep on makin' your crazy voice heard.

  • Feed the monster you've created

And it was all bullshit. Am I the only person in America sick of the poor obama 'never knew a father's love' victim routine. All she did in her speech was perpetuate the great myth axelrove built for this campaign. obama was not without a father figure and he wasn't poor, so why do they keep up the 'poor obama' routine? The media is obviously never going to vet him so no one really knows who barack obama is, much less what he'll do. I personally think there's something pathetic about a man that brokers himself through pity. What's more, it's all false. There was nothing new in that speech, same old crap she's peddled everywhere she's been since her 'patriotic' moment. Now true to all expectations, the media will canonize michelle for her groundbreaking speech and what an orator she's become. What a crock, nothing fresh from michelle or you. Could you be more disappointing, Traister?

  • Sniff

Only someone with a cold, cold heart could've resisted that speech. I was so proud of Michelle. She gave hope to not just black women, but all women. Brava!

  • Lame PR stunt

Hey Obama's just like you and me! He's got kids and a wife, and they joke together, and best of all, SHE LOVES HER COUNTRY!

I just couldn't handle all the SUBSTANCE last night!

If I say I'm a "Strong Black Woman" can I get off the troll list...

  • Jung or Maslow . . .

I forget which, said: "That which is most personal is most general." The whole point of the exercise was to tell the personal story of M.O. so that the Obama family would be seen as just another American family. She succeeded. I doubt that anyone who watched or listened to her speech came away thinking she was scary or threatening.

In fact, the post-game comments from both MSNBC and CNN had the republicans stating they were happy because team Obama hadn't advanced the ball. (Sorry about the sports metaphor, but I heard it more than once on both networks.) I disagree. By taking away the "they're too exotic to live in the White House" argument, the ball was advanced last night.

    @ cahcap

As for the trolls two points: 1) The old saw: "You can lead a whore to culture, be you can't make her think." comes to mind, and 2) I find it best to just ignore them: It's no fun trolling if no one bites.

  • @Cat vs. Roomba

I note you are not denying your troll status. I hope McCain pays you well.

  • Klytus, your parakeet had certain preferences for latrine-paper at the bottom of his cage

and you must be letting him fly around more often. He's been pecking at your keyboard with his beak (for heaven's sake feed him some millet seeds) and is posting the most ridiculous tosh. I'm afraid your parakeet is incontinent.

  • and yet....

    and yet.....

    HE VOTED FOR FISA!!!

This year will be a choice of the lesser of the two evils....

  • That's wonderful. . .

. . .except Michelle Obama isn't actually running for anything.

Highly visible political wives are nothing new (Hillary Clinton, Eleanor Roosevelt, Mary Todd Lincoln, et al.), but I wonder if there's ever before been so much attention and analysis devoted to one before her husband was even elected. Is it really a good thing for democracy when people base a large part of their vote for, or against, a candidate on their feelings about his wife?

Because that means that correspondingly less of their vote will be based on the actual candidate's proposals, experience, voting record, and other such things which, in the long run, matter vastly more.

  • @debaser

I agree with you 100%. I had a subscription a few years ago but let it lapse. But I renewed it this year because of the election. Sure, a few years ago the level of discourse in the letters thread was not always what I had hoped for. But the level of discourse and the editorial direction has deteriorated dramatically with my 2nd go round with Salon. Now I visit it pretty much for entertainment value - I actually find it fun to read the ridiculous letters - my life is sort of boring so reading the junk here is fun. But maybe I should go back to watching soaps or E!

Apologies for above to all of you who actually take the time to post well-reasoned, dispassionate, letters with arguments that are grounded in evidence. Unfortunately, your voices are drowned out by the junk.

  • Binah

I hope you get some Windex for that crystal ball. Remember, this is Salon. Anything that's not 1 trillion percent in agreement with the doctrine is an enemy of the new world order. There are enemies everywhere, everywhere.

Yes, but he's also the first biracial presidential candidate to vote for FISA...

  • @ann0nonymous

"But winning over middle America, it will take more than a speech to do so."

Agree - but she certainly is off to a great start with this speech!

  • South Side Girl too

Michelle Obama's poised, heartfelt, humble, and eloquent speech last night moved this Chicago girl to tears. When an entire system is devoted to denigrating the achievements of women by spurious comments on their appearance, dress, sexuality, and intellect it is heartening to have Michelle Obama standing tall for the rest of us.

She powerfully asserted her pride in her modest but honorable origins, her supportive love for her husband, and her hopes for her daughters' brighter future. Her gracious presence on the world stage last night was a refreshing and powerful rebuke to all the racists and sexists who have worked so tirelessly to smear her over these last few months.
