I'm not sure if you are a serious poster or not because you have only written two letters--but giving you the benefit of the doubt your point is an interesting one to me.

My parents are Republicans who have voted single issue (at least my mother) because of the abortion issue for many election cycles. But this cycle presents a new challenge for my mother's position for three reasons:

    1. abortions decreased under Clinton, not under Bush. why? Because Clinton had more family structured benefits that may have increased women's economic power to keep their babies/and or get adequate health care. Anyway, it's an interesting idea why abortions didn't go down under Bush since he is pro-life.

    2. Obama, as I'm sure you know, has changed his position on late term abortions which is more in keeping with the actual roe v. wade ruling. He stated that his issue with the bill you mention was that it made no exception for the health of the mother--which is a concern of some in the pro-life as well as the pro-choice movement.

    3. McCain is an older candidate so his choice of vp may be very important if he does not run for a second term, or if he has any health problems. If he chooses a pro-choice running mate (as he seems to be promising some of the women who carli fiona or whatever her name is--who is pro-choice and heading up former Clinton supporters who are now moving to McCain--but are also pro-choice) then is it safe for you to vote for a ticket that may be only partially on your side on this issue depending on who McCain selects as his running mate?

And/or even if they are on your side of the abortion issue--what do you have to say about abortion not decreasing under Bush where there was a clear Bush/Cheney both sides committed pro-life ticket? (I thought that Rick Warren, in not addressing this issue, failed his supporters...)

I'm just wondering. One last item--as a person who owns zero houses, I don't consider the house comments to be completely irrelevant. Also, don't you remember in 2004 how Republicans were calling John kerry a gigolo for marrying a rich heiress and living off of her wealth? Does not what goes around, come around? Or are there different standards applied to political candidates based on their political party?

    Just wondering.

one more thing: sorry I can't let this go but it does strike me as odd that the Republican party that is so not pro-life on other issues (death penalty, war coming to mind) abortion is the single or single biggest issue that bothers you when it comes to life.

I was personally appalled by Rick Warrens comments about the holaucast and abortion--does it ever occur to you that Republican politicians have no political will to make abortion illegal--but that it could be a carrot dangled before the evangelicals willing to vote for them?

The reason I state this is that for Roe v. Wade to be overturned--by fiat--you just get into a bigger political war in Washington DC. I haven't seen Republicans who actually want to create this war..not even Bush. Bush expressed contempt for his evangelical supporters--and I have a hard time believing that McCain who once referred to pastors like Rick Warren as agents of intolerance have anything less than contempt for them and who is a bipartisan senator wants that war either.

In short--is it conceivable that Republicans are merely using this issue to get elected--not because they share your ideals?

  • Excellent Choice!!!

    And so it begins.......

The gloves are off and we're taking the fight straight to them!!! Biden had me on the floor today!! Wow.

If plagiarism is the absolute worst thing they can come up with......well, shucks! Let 'em come!!

Joe Biden is tough! He'll rip your face off and have you thanking him for it when he's done!! What a great pick!! I couldn't be happier. I really wanted to see Hillary chosen but, oh well!! I can get behind Obama/Biden 100%!!!

We are going to beat McCain like a rented mule my friends!!!

Fired up and Ready to GO!!!

  • Too funny -- at HuffPo, there's a post up saying the MCCAIN people say they are talking to Colin Powell ...

... yeah, that guy ... the guy who testified to the UN even though he thought a lot of the "intelligence" he was reading was bullshit.

I trust Powell is smart enough to say "thanks, but no thanks" and stay retired.

Yes, Colin Powell WAS a hero to some people ... but to run for office would be to put his entire sordid career (going all the way back to My Lai) on the stand...

    Just say no!

... but to think McCain's camp would ask -- priceless

    =========================================================

I feel good about Biden even though I've disagreed with him often (he's more than just a bit of a hawk, but most of the folks on those subcommittes are -- the MIC koolaid is probably of the triple-X strength) ... He has a lot of energy and enthusiasm and is a good contrast to the more "cerebral" Obama.... and he's REALLY smart and knowledgeable from what I seen. He can think and talk on his feet, even if he occasionally stumbles.

  • Come on down!

As long as Biben doesn't have weapons of mass deception stored up his sleeves, he's cool with me.

  • Yeah

I like Biden, and I think the speech was good, but I don't think 'Barack America' was the biggest goof. What made me chuckle was when Biden said:

"He will have such an incredible opportunity, incredible opportunity, not only to change the direction of America but literally, literally to change the direction of the world."

He'll literally change the direction of the word? Shades of Christopher Reeve. Biden seems to say 'literally' instead of 'uh' or 'ah' or something more traditional like that. Of course I don't think such verbal tics are important--just amusing.

  • Good Move

Although Biden will make a good VP, the real advantage Biden brings to the table is as a campaigner. He will be a pit bull against the GOP. He will suck the wind out old man McCain, and he'll kick the crap out of his VP choice.
