I'm pretty sure most people have not a clue just how widespread this method of disseminating lies is, but I can tell you from personal experience that it is huge. I run an IT shop and have worked on many peoples systems, including their emails. I can always tell a right winger from the collection of "liemails" they have in their inbox. Drilling in the ANWR, Obama's lack of patriotism, Michelle's racism etc. You name it, there exists an email purporting to tell the truth.
I once received the Obama with his hands down by his sides while the national anthem was played liemail from a right wing acquaintance. He had cc'ed the entire list, so magically, I had access to all the other people who he considered with him and were probably right wingers.
I did a reply all and mocked every facet of the email, ending with a call for all Republicans to "vote for Hillary since she has her hand over her heart in a perfectly patriotic stance".
There was stony silence, followed by one emailer telling me to remove her and 3 other names from my "mailing list".
And so they closed ranks, and I was out of the circle. But it was enlightening and terrifying. We are dealing with a very closed minded group of people here who feed on their own self-caused ignorance. These are the same people who grew up listening to Rush Limbaugh on the radio (how can you check on the veracity of his outlandish statements while sitting in a car driving to work?)
This is the future of politics, and as long as they breath the fetid air of ignorance, they'll continue believing what they WANT to believe in, and keep delivering us disasters like Bush.
How does the intelligent left respond? Do we start releasing bogus official sounding emails about McCain and his wife? What will this turn into?
At some point, we need another Mr. Welch/Senator McCarthy moment. The exchange is amazing to watch (http://www.americanrhetoric.com/speeches/welch-mccarthy.html), unfortunately, there is no McCarthy anyone can turn to to ask if they have left no sense of decency.
a) You have not updated yourself else you would have known that I have no God and if indeed than certainly not yours !!
b) You're not of my class so what prevents you from moving yourself silently from here to e.g. the US Army and get yourself some "education" if you're not that dumb enough.
c) Salon is not a place for you to spit your venum... Fox & Cohorts might be more suited to your taste & likings.
At Salon one is required to have at least a level "Batchelors" of any sort to fit the general breed... and one is supposed to be fully employed in a higher than "working class" environment or totally retired from 10 to 24 positions.
d) If you're not panting from hi-pressure or suffered a solid brain hemorrhage by now then I advise you to take the British cue at heart..... :Get stuffed ... !! a rather nasty but pointedly expression very much in use by those attending Cambridge, Oxford and Eaton (in England) you are not elligible for. a) I do know you are about 47 kinds of crazy. I did glance at some of your previous posts.
b) I fight the good fight every day. I am also able to spell and articulate myself clearly and coherently.
c) I won't watch Fox propaganda nor repeat their venemous lies. You do by saying Obama is a non-citizen and a Muslim.
d) Your last two paragraphs are completely incoherent. You are a crazy man. Not that that's necessarily bad! Most people prefer 'fun crazy' not 'creepy insane crazy.' Maybe less of the latter and more of the former and your posts will be more readable and enjoyable.
I have an strange sensation while reading your article, because already on the first page there is the acute sense that I've read this before: the circulating calumny. Possibly right here on Salon among posts.

And where I live, there are all three. It was just a little astonishing, at first.
Of course, I had moved here from Princeton,N.J. at least four years prior to 9/11. The after affects were also astounding, how greatly dispirited (depressed) that latter population when we were out shopping together in the same supermarkets. I recognized the reaction as often described in literature that comes out of the experiences described by Jews enduring the Third Reich. It is also common among African Americans who experience our culture in the same way. That reaction, to a common plight among minorities experiencing the same discrediting and disparaging on an almost daily basis,often induces extreme choices of behaviour to compensate. A good way to sample that would be to take a look again at the film: The Pianist,by Roman Polanski,which starred Adrien Brody. Yes, take a look again and see if you don't recognize the connection.
I make no scientific or any other claims for this. It is simply an observation that has been accumulating over seventy years.
