Thank you for the thoughtful response. Yes I have attended a few strip shows in my life and found that it was one spectator sport I could do without. Your analysis of Barack's ambivalence toward his Pastor's sermons may well be accurate but just the idea that such ambivalence about his Country exists is cause for concern. It tells us he is trying to find out who he is and what he believes, which is something all of us struggle with. I admire that quest for identity but I do not think he should seek to resolve his personal quandry by running for President. That is a bridge too far, he needs incremental steps of solidifying his identity before he marches on. I think people in this Country are outraged by the Bush/Cheney trashing of the Constitution and the protocols of honest Government, I know I am. Baracks candidacy is an opportunity to give the Republicans the salute of disrespect that they deserve. But now we are talking about the leadership of the Country we love and cherish and turning it over to a man who is still soul searching to find out who he really is.
Unless he is able to be more open and reveal the man beneath the facade he will not win. I would encourage him to share the inner struggle which you describe from his book let people see the human side of his dilema, trust the American people for they are as forgiving and understanding a civilization as can be found on the planet. I enjoyed you story of St. Peter and the Seminar in Heaven for the Universal Unitarians.
What I do not understand is why no one on the Obama side is sending emails that simply tell the truth about John McCain. The man has a a scandalous past and present and never do a I see anything on the Obama website or elsewhere remotely criticizing McCain.
There is very little at this point that would cause me to sit home or vote Republican. I will vote ofr Barack Obama in November. My concern is that a year of negative and misleading emails, campaign speeches, etc by Hillary Clinton and John McCain will take a toll. It is not enough to say that these are lies. Obama must go on the offensive, not with lies but the truth about John and Cindy McCain. These are nasty corrupt people with very scandalous pasts. From adultery, drug addiction and drug trafficking, military insubordination, whore mongering, corruption, and bigotry, to religious fraud and elitism, the McCain's true boigraphies offer a treasure trove of real true facts that would be devastating if laid before the public. McCain's honor and hero biography is a sham made up out of whole cloth. Very little of his biography can be backed up with the facts.
If Obama does not have the stomach to tell the truth about McCain, he is by default telling people McCain is a good guy and voting for him is okay. THAT IS THE BIGGEST LIE OF ALL!
You're not "on message" anyway as Obama announced in Berlin that he's a citizen of the world. The world is varied with a lot of divergent opinions, in case you didn't know. As for those "intelligent and thoughtful" writers you mention, I wonder if you have in mind a writer in War Room who chose the heading "Chickenshit" for his/her letter. All the best and keep close to the wall!
Obama, whose father was a practicing Muslim and whose mother was a radical Marxist, has stated that his mother: "Was the dominant figure in my formative years; and, the values she taught me continue to be my touchstone in the world of politics". Common sense deductive reasoning suggests that Obama's rearing as a child, and his extended 20yr relationships, and obvious conformity, with anti-American fanatics such as Rev. Wright ( the Pastor of his church that promoted the doctrine of Louis Farrakhan and James Cone, the guru of Black Liberation Theology ) ; and, Frank Davis, William Ayers, Gerald Kellman, Bernadette Dohrn, etc., etc., are in fact reflective of Obama's true psychological makeup. A conclusion rigidly re-enforced by Obama's San Francisco commentary denigrating folks from small-town America. Obama's affinity for questionable associates such as Tony Rezco, a convicted felon, raises a myriad of questions. Further, his increasingly frequent petulant responses to legitimate criticism is troubling. This man's INITIAL refusal to wear an American flag lapel pin; to place his hand over his heart on the singing of our National Anthem; and, the replacement of the American flag on his campaign plane with an Obama rising sun are conditioned reflexes from his protracted association with disaffected elements in our society; visual images that Obama is certain to attempt to obfuscate in future campaign appearances; even though, he has openly admitted: "I didn't want to offend Muslims and others who don't like America.". Obama is our "home-grown" version of Hugo Chavez. Further, Michelle Obama's angry commentary directed at our country is telling. Fifty-seven (Islamic) State Obama's comments that he would use U.S. Military Forces against Pakistan, a Nation with a sizable nuclear arsenal, and an ally in the war on terror, even without President Musharraf's permission; a Nation that he mistakenly believed to be Arab; his indecision/confusion as to whether Iran poses a serious regional threat; while in other commentary, stating that he would halt the U.S. military's development of advanced weapons systems demonstrates a profound ignorance of the geopolitical threat environment confronting America. His long-term subversive associations, and his immersion in seditious anti-American diatribe have indeed revealed Obama as the real-life Manchurian Candidate. Greg Neubeck
I've been waiting to see Salon, much less the MSM pick up on Cindy (the "only child") McCain's, concealment of her half sister:

Whenever I hear about this kind of ignorant, stomach-turning disinformation campaign, I can't help but think of one of my favorite Henry James quotes: “I don’t want everyone to like me. I should think less of myself if some people did.”
The people who put this stuff out and the majority of the people who are going to be swayed by it most certainly fall in that "some" class. They remind me of another favorite quote from British philosopher and sociologist Herbert Spencer: "There is a principle which is a bar against all information, which is proof against all arguments and which cannot fail to keep a man in everlasting ignorance - that principle is contempt prior to investigation."
These people are not going to be swayed by facts or debunkings or logic. They have substituted contempt for thought and so intensely fear reality-based information that the possibility of it being valid is untenable to them.
Does their ignorant point of view sometimes determine elections? You bet it does. Because too many progressive voters stayed home on election day, George W. Bush was elected not once, but twice by it.
Does this crap need to be addressed? Certainly. Kudos to Salon for a fairly decent job of tackling the issue.
Do we need to get all fired up about it and get involved in flame wars with morons here in the discussion section? Maybe not so much, eh?
What we do need to do is become as informed as we can about the subject and when we get that fwd: fwd: fwd: from Uncle George -- in my case it would probably be Aunt Phyllis, but she knows better than to include me in anything like that again -- we need to do as others here have suggested and hit the "Reply to all" button and reply with the truth.
I've written a few of those truth responses. They all went something like this:
"Dear Aunt ____ [or whoever]. I've got to admit that I'm a little embarrassed that someone related to me [someone I care about, etc.], and that I know is usually better informed than this, would send me such silly nonsense. Have you been into the sherry again? You know what the doctor said about sherry with your diabetes!"Surely you're aware that blah, blah, blah, blah [reality]. The next time you get something like this in the mail and are tempted to send it on, why not look here [snopes link] and make sure it's real before you embarrass both of us by forwarding it to everybody we know. I think you'll be glad you did.
"Your loving nephew [friend, etc.]"
It works almost every time, as does the face-to-face version of the same when running into somebody spouting their nonsense in the non-virtual world.
Getting excited about it and fussing and fuming here influences nobody and wastes energy that is better spent registering new progressive voters and getting them out to the polls on election day.
Much of the initial coverage about Fort Hood turned out to be wrong. Is there anything wrong with that?
