Thanks klytus for the rational retort to maureen's misread of Malcolm X's spiritual and political evolution. The 1960's was a hotbed of angst, and too often the players of that era get pigeonholed and typecast. Things were not as simple as the read maureen gives of the prominent Black names back then. Here is a quote from one of them:
''I favor integration on buses and in all areas of public accommodation and travel...I am for equality. However, I think integration in our public schools is different. In that setting, you are dealing with one of the most important assets of an individual -- the mind. White people view black people as inferior. A large percentage of them have a very low opinion of our race. People with such a low view of the black race cannot be given free rein and put in charge of the intellectual care and development of our boys and girls.''
That was not H. Rap Brown, but Martin Luther King.
EVEN IF the email wasn't lying - that Michelle Obama's thesis is a glowing paean to all things Black Power...
So fucking what?
Something she wrote as a 21 year old certainly shouldn't be held against her as a 40-something mother of two now should it? You don't think she could've...ya know...changed her mind? Nah...once you have an opinion on something there it stays immoveable for the rest of your life right?
And besides...Do you REMEMBER the stupid shit you believed when you were 21?? No really, think back...there are few things in life more irritating than a 21 year old. Would you be okay with being judged on a journal you wrote in when you were 21? I know I certainly wouldn't.
The only people who believe that someone can't change their mind in 25 years of living are morons and republicans (I guess that's only one type of person...)
In order to actually debunk the first e-mails about Michelle Obama's thesis, one first has to read the thesis in its entirety. If one does not do that, one can neither legimately support or defend the thesis. All those efforts either way are nothing but sound and fury. Do you really think that Obama's thesis committee could just get away with reading part of it? No thesis is designed to be critiqued in the way in which most of you are doing it. By critiqued, I mean that it cannot be either praised or criticized piecemeal. For those too lazy to read it, I can only say that you are making fools of yourselves.
Maureenodonnell is also right (she is often right) in this: You simply cannot assume that someone thinks in their 40s as they did in their 20s. If anyone were to do so, it would merely indicate an appalling lack of intellectual growth. Do you who are 25 think as you did when you were five? Do you are 45 think as you did when you were 25? If so, I certainly feel sorry for you.
If chain emails are an effective way of getting a negative campaign message out, then Americans are, in general, a nation of utter nincompoops. While I wouldn't argue with anyone else who would make such an observation, I still have to wonder if stupidity is that pervasive in American society. Given that George W. Bush managed to get a second term as President, I would have to say yes, Americans are that stupid. Not just ignorant, which can be remedied with some effort, but stupid.
"Depending on the situation, serving one ethnic or racial constituency "first and foremost" could be considered racist. It wouldn't be for a member of the House of Reps whose district was primarily of that race/ethnicity. It would be for a President, who presumably is responsible for all citizens of all demographics."
But that statement was from MICHELLE OBAMA'S thesis! She is not running for public office and has never held public office. When she spoke of serving the black community, she probably meant volunteering for Black charities, donating her money to them etc. etc. Ever heard the expression "charity begins at home?" That's all she meant by saying that her first responsibility was to serve her own community.
Thanks isn't due to me, but to X's own words which I'm glad you've posted. I was born during that hotbed, and I'm happy to say the heat has cooled, but not the hurt on both sides, it still sorta smolders. But believe it, we're getting past the after radiation effects more rationally every day. And Obama's hope or no, that's my hope, and I think everybody else's...ya know? But I do agree with one thing that people should take note of...don't bandy about the label racist unless its really there. And most times you know when its there there, so have always a care.
You've chosen quite a bit of extreme information that you say has been circulating around the Internet. There is more information out there that is likely to be true. The fact is that many people are not going to vote for Barack Obama nor are they going to listen to the debunking. He is not a candidate that a major party should put up as presidential material. If Obama had a record in the Senate of legislation or doing much work during his lifetime, these "evil" email gossips wouldn't matter a bit. Why would anyone want to vote for someone with so empty a record who will only go on witch hunts if elected to find out who is putting bad information out about him. The evil rumor of Thomas Jefferson bedding his slave was probably true and debunking it didn't seem to matter in the long run. If rumors aren't true, they will go away. Tell Salon's and the media's candidate to "get a life."
Supposedly, 10 percent, or MORE, of the U.S. believes Obama is a Muslim. If Obama doesn't win the Presidency, I am going to make plans to move to Canada or Europe, where we won't have the danger of becoming a fascist state rearing its awful head.
Much of the initial coverage about Fort Hood turned out to be wrong. Is there anything wrong with that?
