Debunking anti-Obama e-mails Error-filled chain e-mails designed to scare voters away from Barack Obama are circulating widely on the Internet. Salon deconstructs a pair, one smearing the candidate, the other his wife.

  • @Kirk

Self correcting? Is that the episode when the captain and company go through a transporter warp and get stranded in the nega-verse of the mirror mirror, and then Scotty fixes the transporter pad, and they return to the normal-verse. For the love of god...Fuck off.

  • Consider the source

It only takes a keyboard. Not brains.

  • The Obama e-mails and the "cure"

Reading this from my window of unbiased clarity in Toronto (tongue somewhat in cheek) I wonder about the bigger problem that these e-mails are symptomatic of. Blatant racism and fear mongering aside, I can't help feel that the reason this is an issue, is the damn length of your election cycle. As some of you may know, In Canada, we have a boom-boom out go the lights system. The whole thing takes about a month. As a result we only have time for the big two (the economy and the environment) if time allows we may have a discussion as to what level we'll be funding arts. Every now and then the issue comes up, but it's really just to fill time.

The point being, we simply do not have the cycles for these kind of attacks to make there way in any substantive fashion. It seems to me (so it must be worse for those of you who live in the states) that this thing has been going on forever. I have to believe that if your entire process from nomination to election lasted four weeks, the level of discourse would be raised enough and tightened up to the point where this kind of attack simply wouldn't have the time to be an issue. Right now, the whole thing reminds of that horrific show which my wife seems to love "Big Brother" with nothing to do but kill endless time, everyone sits around and lies about one another. Just a thought........

  • Great

Another article that cuts through the BS. Salon-nature's antidote to CNN.

  • American citizenship is to be prized, no matter where your ancestors came from.

The media over here is reporting that Barack Obama's younger brother, fully African, is living in destitution in Nairobi. I don't think people realise that there is so much poverty and deprivation in the world and that the United States, however imperfect, offers opportunities that are not available elsewhere. Anyone who's a candidate for what is still the most important job in the world will have his or her life put under the microscope. Even Socks, the Clintons' cat, became an "animal companion of interest" so a relatively new politician on the inernational scene such as Barack Obama has aroused even more attention than usual and that interest will extend to his wife and relations. Italy is the land of the "paparazzi" and it was an Italian reporter who found George (?) Obama living in one of Nairobi's shanty-towns.

The Net is like the monster created by Victor Frankenstein. He thought he could control it but found out the fallacy of that. Mary Shelley never envisaged the Internet but she grasped the essentials about unimaginable possibilities when she wrote her novel. That's the way we live now.

  • @maureen

Yeah, we used to have this guy named Walter Cronkite who read the news for CBS, and after each news cast he used to say "And that's the way it is.."

  • Xranadu Hutman

Point out one fucking inaccuracy in the first email, aside from the unsourced mystery fellow classmate.

    That's what I thought.

  • "mystery fellow class mate?"

    Sounds shadey Grady.

  • Anyway only zealots like y'all

would turn off the spam filters on your email so that you're bathed in the shit that political advertising is, anyhow. Who do you think sees this crap? You, and Glenn Greenwalds army of angry sock monkeys scouring the interblogs for those mean evil war criminals who don't agree with your doctrine. What's that? A hundred people? Same with your dopplegangers. Oh Oh I got an email that says McCain can whip Iraqi ass single handed. Ok I wasn't going to vote for him, but now I am!!! Woopie!!!! Huzzah!

It's kind of sad the kind of teapot tempests brew on the interblogs. What otherwise trivial nonsense gets elevated to a divine struggle between the forces of the light and the apocalypse.

Today slashdot reported that California, Ohio and Florida banned e-voting and that thousands of these machines are piling up in warehouses around the country. Why not a mention of that here @ Salon? Why is there almost nothing material covered here besides whisper campaigns about the VP slot, and of course Greenwald's obsessive paranoia about being snubbed by the mainstream media?

I'm afraid that Salon doesn't even pretend to matter any longer, much less do any reporting even if it's the laziest kind. Not even that. It's just hot air and vaguely informed opinions about minutiae and personal vendettas.

  • @ Ouroboros

    Michelle Obama:

"There was no doubt in my mind that as a member of the black community, I am obligated to this community and will utilize all of my present and future resources to benefit the black community first and foremost."

    How is this not racist?

Why do you want to think it is racist?

That is -- and I hope you will forgive me -- something I find very suspect.

If I were to say this:

As a woman, who is aware of discrimination based upon sex, I feel obligated to the feminist community and will utilize all of my present and further resources to benefit women first and foremost.

Does that make me a sexist? Does that mean that I hate men?

And if some men decide to take great offense at that and any and all efforts that I might make on the behalf of women, these men, who are members of the community who still get about 25% more wages and income than women, who are still very much the majority of political leaders, who are still able to control the top tier of of decision makers in the corporate world, are they not the true sexists?

So if you really believe that there is something improper in that Michelle Obama statement, albeit taken out of the context of the rest of her thesis, what does that make you?

  • @Captain Jerk

If this shit is so trivial why did you write four fucking livid paragraphs about it?
