First off, everyone has to acknowledge that the "debate" format was unique, effective and fair. It compared apples to apples for once. Why all you secular lefties are getting your panties in a bunch because Rick Warren moderated is typical religious bigotry since both candidates are avowed Christians. Did they not have a clue what they'd be in for? The debate revealed stark contrasts between the two candidates: McCain is certain of his positions and Obama is not. Lefties like to interpret that as McCain being too simplistic, which of course makes Obama more cerebral. I interpret Obama's nuanced responses as that of a typical politician that does not want to take a firm position on any controversial issue, lest there's a chance of alienating any potential votes. People on either side of an issue walk away not sure of where Obama stands, leaving open an interpretation that vaguely fits their position. I personally prefer a leader with conviction.
That smug b-tard asking the questions reminded me of the kid who owned the ball everyone else was obliged to play with. And Obama's obedience in such a forum made me sad.
I don't mean to generalize but it seems to me that one's obedience to a higher power tends to be greater in those who have lower intellectual curiosity. There's a disturbing (to me) parallel between one offering up one's life to a fictional character and one who offers up one's vote to a fictional platform.
When is the atheist forum?
He strikes as the same as every other goatee backwards hat wearing fat 40 year old golfer/bowler driving a pickup you see every day. With little to add but the certainty of his own convictions and little else. His questions were essentially
"Are you as selfrighteous about my views as I am?"
is all about soundbites, not action.
He'll hunt down Osama to the gates of Hell. Except for when he's advocating pulling more troops to stabilize and police Iraq and then calls for them to be diverted from being sent home for a well deserved rest to take on Russia.
He's against all liberal Supreme Court justices except for when he's voting to confirm every single one of them.
McCain's faith display was actually about a very brave VC soldier's display. McCain was not at risk that Christmas for being Christian, the VC was. Let's hope there are a few kind Christian guards in Guantanemo showing equal kindness.
On the side, my five year old granddaughter is also absolutely certain she is always correct and is willing to fight you for it.
Or is that one of those "quaint" notions like the Geneva Convention and the 4th Amendment that we've had to do away with?
I cannot tell you how infuriated and sick and tired I am of these religious hucksters horning their way into the democratic process and poisoning the well against reasonable discourse.
At bare minimum, the Saddleback Church should lose its tax exempt status. If religious leaders want to play politics they can ante up like everyone else.
Just what we need, another idiot in the whitehouse who doesn't give any thought before he speaks.
McCain's answers were quick. He hit all his talking points. He mercilessly pandered (to Clintonistas with the Ebay hero, to Warren, quoting his book, to prolifers with his supreme court answer .. even though he voted for all of them).
Like many on this forum I hate the fact that in order for a candidate to win they have to 'prove' their spirituality. I long for the day a candidate tells the world it's none of your damn business. But for now, one step at a time.
A black president, and Republicans out.
Also, it was clear that Obama treated this forum as an interview. Answering Warren directly, looking at his questioner. McCain however turned to the audience on most questions, treating the forum as a town hall meeting.
Finally, is anyone sick of this 'my friends' crap. It's so disingenuous. I first heard heard back when he was 'spanking' Romney at the debated.
Are the Evangelicals still around?
My god, I thought they got what they wanted these last four years.
A holy war resulting in the death of thousands of American kids, a destroyed economy, the diminishment of power and respect for America; all in all the end of a short lived empire. I mean it's all building to the rapture, or endtimes or whatever monkey, hocus-pocus bullshit they believe in.
Now what do they want?
Can't they just go away and revel in the understanding that they helped destroy America.
How anyone can say McCain "did pretty well." He stuck to bits of stump speech and rehearsed, maudlin stories (the one about the cross in the dirt sounded made up for the occasion; maybe he's told it before, but I hadn't heard it) -- where Obama gave thoughtful, even-handed responses to the questions he was asked, at the level of abstraction or spirituality that they were asked. (McCain took a question about the concept of evil and turned it straight into a worn-out rah-rah for the war in Iraq, trying to float once again the idea that we're "winning".) Yes, I'm an Obama supporter, but I'm not stupid. If McCain had said anything vaguely original or heartfelt, I'd have seen it, I would acknowledge it. He didn't.
And though Warren did a pretty decent job, he laughed too hard at McCain's lame jokes, clearly enjoyed the depressing amount of approval McCain received from the church audience. Why is it so many men who claim to be followers of Jesus -- you know, that skinny guy hanging on the cross, who talked about giving whatever you have to someone else who needs it more -- always so well-fed?
How is it our fault you people stick your noses in where they don't belong? Gay marraige, abortion, none of these things are any of your business. For the past eight years we got stuck with what essentially amounts to a sock puppet running the country because you cared more about other people's sex lives then you did your own needs.
Much of the initial coverage about Fort Hood turned out to be wrong. Is there anything wrong with that?
