  • children of a much lesser god

It is pitiful and embarrasing that our presidential candidates feel they must publicly flog their Christianity in order to get the votes of people who punterjoe accurately described as immune to reason in his excellent post in this thread. These "christians" will not vote for Obama under any circumstance. Obama's no dummy and probably knows this, so his appearance at Saddleback is really more about showing his supporters and the undecided that he is at least open minded and not writing off those who plainly will not vote for him- politically a good move.

As for the candidate's respective versions of Christianity I much prefer Obama's, which seems to me to be of a far more tolerant- dare I say it Jesus-like- version than the angry and hateful neo-con fundamentalist god McCain has so publicly embraced to pander to the republican base.

  • How Democrats are so-o-o-o accommodating...

When BRACK OBAMA the made-up character like hard-bodied golfer JORDAN BAKER also "...incurably dishonest" from THE GREAT GATZBY{see OBAMA's statements that a) his mom and dad met at Selma, b) that his middle-name BARACK came from the word 'baruch'blessing only after a JEWISH AIPAC meeting in WASHINGTON,c) tire inflation is as good as drilling for our energy problems, d) so many other fabricated invented falsehoods!!!}; answered that 'evil exists' without referring to AL-Q'AIDA the TALIBAN or the ongoing RUSSIAN onslaught into GEORGIA - OBAMA delighted his creators THE NATIONAL ^SSHOLE MEDIA in honing to their blinkered-reality of the world= UNITED STATES CAPITALISM BAD - RUSSIAN TYRANNY IS GOOD!!! Perhaps these sentiments would play better in the 1/2 of EUROPE that was not under the SOVIET UNION's enlightened policies than here in the good ol' USofA besides MARXIST enclaves in BERKELEY CA. or CAMBRIDGE MA. or the heart-of-the DEMBHOLE PARTY nationwide. 'Arise ye workers of the world' and vote for BARACK the MARXIST of 'hope&change'[if HILLARY&D^CKHEAD will allow him to take center-stage at his own coronation???!!! All hail comrade OBAMA - the eventual president. Or is he the more he spouts his 'red-tinged' policies of accommodation without the aid of a teleprompter??? If he 'gives-in' this easily to the sleazy CLINTON's to 'unify' the DEMBHOLE PARTY - will he give away say POLAND, or the UKRAINE, or what is becoming of a democratic IRAQ to assure 'peace in our time'??? Ah DEMBHOLES always such accommodating wankers!!!

  • Admirably Cynical

The Republican strategy for the last three elections is simple: portray every one of your opponent's strengths as a weakness. Kerry's a war hero and Bush was a draft dodger? ... why, Kerry didn't *earn* those medals. Obama is popular, and the people of the world are cheering him on, making them realise there's

hope for America and generally, to coin a phrase, welcome him with open arms as a liberator? Why ... he must be a mere celebrity.

Obama's strategy here, as elsewhere, is much better - take the fight to the Republican heartland. He's not going to swing that many evangelicals to vote for him ... but he'll get some, he'll keep some others at home, he'll keep the debate about McCain's faith open. Most importantly ... he'll force McCain to keep spending time and money shoring up his base.

Obama does, regrettably, seem to be a man of faith. But don't let that mask the ambition and calculation that's gone into this move. He's fighting the Republicans over there, in the red states, so that he doesn't have to fight McCain over here.

  • @Clapham

You said: “Evangelicals are not fooled by Obama. We see his record, the fact that he sat under the teaching of a heretical (and racist) preacher for 20 years, and we see where his priorities lie.”

You are so right to see through Obama. You obviously see that he is not an ignorant rube that thinks the earth is only 6000 years old and that the Bible is the literal word of god. You clearly see that he doesn’t buy into that puerile rubbish about the rapture, the tribulation and that we (the US) have to protect Israel so that God can destroy it on his own good time.

Thanks for calling bullshit on Obama and painting him for the secularist that I know he really is.

Unfortunately, Obama seems to loose sight of his secularist roots and spends way too much time pandering to the ignorant and deeply anti-intellectual evangelical community.

  • @ Deeply Imbedded I could not agree more.

America , where you better pony up to Jesus if you want to get elected. The real galling thing about McCain is that you know he is lying through his teeth. There is nothing in his past to indicate this is anything more than pandering. Rick Warren is no different than yer run of the mill money grabbing TEE VEE evangelist. I guess you can be smug if you have conned people out of millions of dollars. We are the laughing stock of the world again running this religious litmus test like some theocracy.

  • The brethern

I guess I am an ignorant yahoo (see post above), but I thought McCain addressed the questions more directly, without the signature ah-ah-ahs and no, I don't think he cheated with an earpiece. As for "Do this to the least of my brothers"--where are the sisters? This religion thing, though, should not be such a big litmus test.

  • McCain's Greatest Moral Failing

Was the failure of his first marriage? I'll bet that must have made his current wife feel great.

I just keep chuckling at the mere thought of what my wife's reaction would be if I told the world that my greatest moral failing had been the termination of a previous romantic relationship. Of course, I would never dream of humiliating anybody like that, let alone my wife.

Seriously, am I the only one who feels that way? C'mon, it's Sunday...we can gossip a little.

  • @Ellis

I agree, what's also funny is McCain is still able to rectify his moral failing and do the right thing by going back to his first wife who didn't want the divorce.

    Yeah right.

  • on obama's cowardice

Last night, Obama proved that he is an utter coward when he sidestepped the question on abortion. When asked when human rights should begin for an unborn person, he merely claimed that we should cut down on unwanted children.

In fact, his voting record, and his A+ rating with Planned Parenthood, Emily's list, and NARAL prove that he has no regard whatever for the innocent children that want only to be born and cared for and loved. His shrill vitriol advocates total access to abortion at all stages.

Think about it: he defends even so called "partial birth abortion" which involves puncturing the head of a child so its brains can be sucked out.

Murder looks like murder, doesn't it? And he assents to it.
