    Why Can't Obama...

Today is 11 August. Nobody cares. America is in the height of burgers and beer, pennant races and days at the beach. This past Sunday on This Week with George Stephanopolopouphisis(who wasn't even there), Cokie and George and Dee Dee and a couple of other guests conversed over the round table about whatever it was they discussed. The only people watching the show were the cameramen, the technical director and me. And the only reason I was watching the show was that I had just come home after a 2 week vacation and I needed some inane blather to help me do the laundry so that I might have something to wear come Monday morning. We are in the season of the Summer Doldrums. John McCain could wear a dress and do a review in Provincetown as Liza Minelli and it might result in a 1% drop in the polls. Barack Obama could go on tour with Keanue Reeves as second fiddle, give John Edwards a big kiss on the lips and annex Freedonia as his personal feifdom and nobody would care. Conventional wisdom has always stated that until after Labor Day the American electorate doesn't pay attention. Guess what? We are not paying attention. It is summer. We don't care. So tell Cokie and Wolf and the various Georges and the two prominent journalists and the Bush-Cheney campaign official to relax, have a beer, go see a bunch of men dressed as women impersonating Broadway stars singing Broadway tunes and have a good time. There is plenty of time for all this campaign nonsense. But there is still plenty of summer left . See you all in the Fall.
