Would Obama prosecute the Bush administration for torture? Obama's brain trust wants to form a commission on torture and call Bush officials as witnesses, but put off prosecutions -- if any -- till a second term.
The letters thread is now closed.
  • OBAMA's 2nd term?

He kills me, the man is so arrogant he goes around talking about his second term all the time. He is going to be George Bush the second, he thinks he is being crowned KING. Let's just see how he will interprete the Constitution. I wish some one had the balls to change our elction process and make it a popular vote, screw the delegates and the elctoral college, a complete popular vote!

    Sign me sick of Policitcs!

  • They'll be back...

In four or eight or twelve years, the right will be back in power. I shudder to think what crimes they will be emboldened to commit then, if they get away with the crimes they've committed over the past several years, now. If we let all of this slide, the Republic is dead.

BTW, NYShooter's post moved me to tears. Will we ever be that America again?

  • @NYShooter

    Dear NY Shooter,

Thanks so very much for your post. It brought tears streaming down my face and put a lump in my throat that was choking, to say the least.

You reminded me and us of that which we should be about. My great fear is that it will not happen. When we have people like Scalia, Thomas, Roberts and Alito on the SCOTUS what can we expect. They are at the highest levels of law and order in our country and they are actually the enemy, and they attack us from within.

I think it was Sinclair Lewis who said something like: 'when tyranny comes to America it will be wrapped in a flag and carrying a cross'. How prescient and profound he was, seeing in the 1930's, what has come to pass, in these current times.

Right wing extremist religion, including my own, has joined with the top tier of businesses under the guise of the Republican party to form a level of Fascism that we would never have guessed was ever possible in these United States.

Dear NYShooter, I cry with you and for you, for what you have experienced and for what we have so far experienced and are yet to experience from the likes of...well we all know who they are. Their names have been brought up countless times by so many on this forum that further repetition seems pointless.

Big Religions have joined with the Big Business elite to form a boiling pot of the 'perfect storm 'that seems about to consume all of us. Right wing fundamentalist ideology, both business ideology and religious ideology has merged, despite Jesus' admonition, to form a 'perfect storm' that is brewing and is about to dismantle America.

The Americans, the saving people for you, about whom you spoke so eloquently, will not prevail to save us, they are no more. The bell is tolling for us and the Neocons and the Theocons are pulling the rope and doing the tolling, they are called conservatives, they are called Republicans.

Religion was aligned with Hitler, the Nazis and the Fascists as well. And it is aligned now, with the Republicans, the.conservatives.

Another Holocaust is with us. And what nearly consumed you, seems about to consume America. It has put secret torture prisons throughout the world, it is that powerful. Not only is the Holocaust with us once again, the Spanish Inquisition is also with us, once again.

NY Shooter, your post was about reminding us of our duty and our responsibility to prosecute on behalf of and for the Rule of Law. The violaters of that Rule of Law have permeated America directly, and indirectly, the entire 'Family of Man'. But we will fall short of your and my aspirations toward the rule of law, and so, how little remains of our now badly shredded Constitution, that "old piece of paper ", that Bush and Scalia are now trampling. They have so efficiently showered us with their fears and fearmongering, that we too have become so fearful that we will never prosecute them.

What is left of our Democracy is very near death or at the very least is becoming an economic slavery to fill the American Gulag of prisons with economic slaves, and possibly even political slaves.

NY Shooter, many thanks for your profound and insightful post. I sincerely hope that what you call for comes to pass. I fear, that as before (Nixon and Ford) it may never happen. And as before, our nation will be none the wiser and thus, the ultimate loser. Then we both will weep tears, as will so many of our countrymen. The 59 million who voted for the Bushies will continue to take up arms to resolve their angst, as they go about shooting up more churches and other bastions of intellectualism that they disagree with. The burning of books has been going on in America since the days of Nixon and his political strategist Kevin Phillips, who 'southernized' the Republican party.

So, will Obama prosecute the Bushies. I very, very much doubt it. The Bush family and their crimes have been immunized by their alignment with the religious right. Once, immunized by their eastern establishment heritage, now it is the RR that they have secured in their corner and it is that group of mega religions/mega churches that immunizes them.

We, the American people, will never see any prosecutions, and America will be the great loser for it. Were their prosecutions, the Bush family betrayal of America would stand out and their family immunity would cease. Thus saving our nation from the next perpetrator of evil and horrors, Jeb Bush.

Though in his heart Obama MIGHT know he SHOULD seek justice he is under it all a politician and don't they freaking ALWAYS seek the expedient way of doing things and eschew that which is the moral or correct path. Yup, that is exactly what they do and that is exactly what he will do.

  • Back to basics

Torture is in the lowest, worst rank of crimes, along with murder and rape. We need to investigate. The only defense would be to say, "I never tortured."

These people either tortured, or they did not torture. We need to investigate and document any torture by Americans. Then, afterward, the punishments will be a separate issue.

Leave the debate over punishment for the future. Even leave the debate over charges and trials for the future. Sarting now, take the first step, and begin the investigation.
