Letters posted here are associated with the following article:
Would Obama prosecute the Bush administration for torture? Obama's brain trust wants to form a commission on torture and call Bush officials as witnesses, but put off prosecutions -- if any -- till a second term.

  • Obama Is A Pussy

By framing any potential movement for justice as a "partisan witch hunt" he furthers a self-fulfilling prophecy. The fact is this Administration is rife with real, actual scandal. If Obama had any balls he would use this scandal to both win the election and create the conditions for accountability.

There is NO issue more important than these fundamental issues of executive branch overreach. Its not just the policy of torture and the illegal wiretaps etc. -- its a fundamental constitutional question about the power of the president and whether or not it is limited. In other words its a fundamental question about Am,erica's very identity.

But I guess Obama feels he has to upgrade infrastructure or get his half-assed health plan passed.

This country has no leadership at all.

  • Willing to become a facist state

Wow, very emotional posts here today. But are any of you actually thinking about what you are writing? "Truth Commissions" that act in secret finding out information about people. That sounds like some other political agencies from history...Oh that's right the SS and KGB among the various other groups in history that used power of political majority to tract down and keep "tabs" on those who might be doing wrong in the eyes of the power holders.

Alot of you are so angry at the Bush administration that you are willing to form your own facist government in order to battle the perceived facist government of Bush. Turning over complete control to one party is wrong...as many of you point out when it's republicans, but when it is your party that is control that becomes okay?

The fact that so many of you can spend your days posting these posts saying with impunity what you want (torturing Bush, killing this or that republican, the ignorance of anyone who doesn't agree with your or is too much to the right) should show the freedoms that still exist in this country and that it isn't a dictatorship sans any personal liberties. But this our way or it's the wrong way attitude of alot of liberals on this site seem guilty of the same wrongdoings that you accuse the right of. So let me ask this of all of you if this dichotomy Good vs. Evil of the Bush administration is so wrong, why do so many of you want to implant the liberal dichotomy that seems to run rampant on this site?

I don't have any answers to what the right path is but just want to give a little warning. Those of you who have this extreme left ideas over what is the right path are the reasons so many people are scarred of liberals. What little "right" media is left picks up on this and the average citizen is as scared by you as any terrorist. You claim to be for freedoms of speech, right to choose, etc, but only when those choices are in line with what you believe. So if the mentality of the "cowboy" Bush and all those "stupid hillbillies" that voted for him are wrong, how is your way of thinking any better. It's the same "our way or the highway" mentality and doesn't leave me much hope no matter who is in office next. And now to end with an ad homen attack: Maybe it's not the right that are the stupid, blind, obedient lap dogs, just a thought.

And since any one with a different opinion is considered a troll or a repug let me clear the air. I'm a liberal leaning conservative, not a republican, who loves this country and believes if people were more motivated by intelligence and the right but sometimes tough choices (this is for both parties who seem so concerned with knee jerk political alliance and faux outrage over anything the other party does) this country would be the beacon it was supposed to be.

  • @NYShooter

    wow, helluva post

  • @inkspot

You are an idiot -- a completely disingenuous asshole. Fuck off.

  • Just reading when "cognitive dissonance" popped up on p.l of Letters

I'm not sure whether that's regarded as better or worse than "the one note samba" but it's fascinating to anyone even mildly interested in the English language (particularly words with a Latinate root). Does it mean that quite a number of Americans relegate almost every human activity to the psychologist's/psychotherapist's/ psychiatrist's couch? Does it mean that a people who once had a reputation for plain speaking now find it easier to resort to linguistic subterfuge (I know, I know, more of it). My excuse is that I'm not a proud "shooting from the hip" American. Oh yes, does the "would" of Mark Benjamin's question translate better as "Could", since that appears to be the nub of the argument.

Anyway, a bit of plain English MIGHT be in order. Today is Mr. Obama's 47th birthday and Mark Benjamin, so sanguine (here we go again!) in his attitude to the US Presidency, first term cum second term, has ignored the human factor. "Happy birthday, Barack" is short and sweet like a donkey's gallop. As well, from a woman's point of view, attention to detail is important. Just ask Maureen Dowd!

  • @ The Fool

You are an idiot -- a completely disingenuous asshole. Fuck off.

How am I disingenuous? Is it because you don't agree with what I say or is it because you know me personally and are an astute judge of my character. since you don't know me I'm guessing it's the previous reason.

Am I disingenuous because I lean to the right but find myself on a very left news site. Or perhaps I just enjoy getting as many views on events as possible. I want to know what all factions are thinking, luckily since I was a victim of the mortgage meltdown i now have the time to pursue and get all the various takes on the news to my heart's content.

But The Fool please explain to me how I am disingenuous since your initial attack was lacking in any substance other then being Ad Homen. I would like to understand what leads you to this revelation.

  • Let's not get ahead of ourselves, either

With three months still to go and Karl Rove calling the shots behind the scenes, Obama has not been elected yet.

And do you think by Election Day all of our previous problems will have been magically solved involving irregularities, voting-machine security, minority intimidation, hanging chads, exit poll anomalies and Swiftboat misinformation in every swing state that promises to be close?
