Would Obama prosecute the Bush administration for torture?

Obama's brain trust wants to form a commission on torture and call Bush officials as witnesses, but put off prosecutions -- if any -- till a second term.

The letters thread is now closed.

@ Dave Satan

Too late, Dave. Salon's crammed with what Saul Alinsky called "means and ends liberals". They're the sort of people whose laundry-list purity obsessions and refusal to evolve any new strategies beyond what was already co-opted by the Cons back in 1970, are one of the main reasons why the Cons have been allowed to shift this country ever rightward. (The takeover of our media by right-wing interests -- a takeover that started in the 1970s and which moneyed liberals ignored until a decade ago, and which they still have yet to figure out how to counter, is another.)

I wish I could tear these people away from their papier-mache puppets and tiara-crowned pink-gowned ego-trippings and make them study Alinsky's Rules for Radicals. But nooooo, doing what he suggests would, y'know, involve icky boring shoe-leather work. And connecting with - GASP - people who don't think, eat, and listen to the same bands they do! Some of them may even be black.

Since that'll never happen, I'll settle for telling people to Google the words "Obama Chicago organizer". But it still won't do any good.

Mr Compromise: "I don't do confrontation"

Obama"s cave in on FISA ,( a nod to how he'll deal with corporations and just how lightly he considers the citizenry), backtrack on NAFTA & reproductive rights, the pile of bodies under his bus and his unwillingness to confront anything stronger than slights to his wife are precursors to how he'll preside. The first term will begin campaign 2012 and in 2012 he'll be looking for donors to fund his library.(yawn)

the only change we'll get with Obama is his historicity and thats just why the DNC chose him...

@thegreatinkspot

"leaning to the right" already makes you a fucke up asshole, especially if you are capable of leaning to the right after the last 8 years. Besides, since when is bringing war criminals to justice considered left wing extremism? Was Chris Dodd's dead, a Nurnberg prosecutor an extremist too? You fucking right-leaning twerp.

@NYShooter

The US you and your forefathers imagined, is gone for ever.

The Statue of Liberty which brought succor to so many millions of refugees and the words written beneath it have no meaning today.

The First Republic is being slowly owned by corporate

The Obama you and me believe will not lift a finger to stop it, because he himself is an agent of the same.

I saw Smith Goes to Washington yesterday night and i wept for America.

Are you the descendants of the brave who threw out boxes of tea over Boston harbor to protest taxes?

Are you the same people who wrote those immortal words: "We the people..."

Are you the same people who would rather give the shirt off your back to a defeated enemy and share your meals with him?

Are you the same people who pioneered the Flower Power Generation?

I weep for you.

I liked the idea

that one poster put forth, of denying GB a secret service detail for life. Saves taxpayer dollars while forcing GB to pay his own way for a change. On second thought, the visual of what Blackwater guards could do to an innocent American public... and there's no chance that some vigilante would finally do the job that congress refuses to do. I'll just go back now and do what we've all been doing: disparing that the situation is hopeless. God save us, as we are incapable of saving ourselves.

Political Expediency

Obama will have enough on his hands, other than give Bush people more publicity. Congress, with the approval of American voters, allowed George Bush and his thugs to invade Iraq, torture anyone who looks like a Muslim, and run roughshod in the Middle East. Did I forget oil? How about oil at $140 a barrel? It wasn't until Obama went to the Middle East that the price of oil dropped. That is the audacity of hope. I trust the media will play up whichever story gets the most readers, Obama great, or Obama bad.

For torture of the United States of America?

I say, let's get Bush and his cronies out of D.C. and ban them to Texas--a proper sentence and punishment. I think most of us would be happy not to ever hear any of this administration's names and misdeeds ever again. Nor will we forget the worst administration this country has ever witnessed.

Obama will have too many other things to take care of to get this country back up out of the gutter. Let's concentrate on that.

are we not a nation ruled by law?

How can we just sweep the crimes of the Bush administration under the rug, if we claim to be a civilized nation ruled by laws, and not a banana republic dictatorship?

It would require immense leadership to accomplish this--plus some Republicans on board to avoid the charges of partisanship. It must be fair and transparent. Plenty of Democrats will be shamed as well, for their complicity. And yes, Obama would have to establish his authority and make good his promises to be a "uniter."

But it would be so wrong to just let this drop. And it seems presumptuous to assume Obama will get a second term.

So, maybe not in the first year. But whoever gets elected needs to pursue this if our government is to have any credibility at all.
