...how I would want Bush and Cheney to be remembered as Pres and VP.
My simple answer: "Hanged for Treason."
Any bets?
Of course, the main historical example of a criminal regime being tried after its overthrow is the German "National Socialist" high command after World War II. The difference between that prosecution and our current predicament is that the Nazi regime lost a world war. The Bush regime hasn't actually "lost" a war. They just prosecuted two wars for reasons of empire and monetary gain for their cronies.
There probably won't be a full prosecution of the Bush gang for one simple reason: the entire system is sufficiently corrupt that virtually everyone in public office, the major news media, and the corporate business infrastructure is criminal to some degree. There is a heavy pot-calling-the-kettle-black element to any prosecution of the crimes of political actors.
If convicted, the various minions of the Bush criminal regime would no doubt appeal all the way to the Supreme Court, itself tainted by dubious decisions, including the installation of Bush as president. Indeed, Bush has appointed the current Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, a former key player in the "recount" in the "Florida" portion of the 2000 "election."
So what's a poor boy to do? I trust in the Law of Karma, which is likely to manifest in surprising ways. The criminality of this regime runs deep, and our main hope should be for an Obama victory in November, and a succession without incident or coup on January 20. Out of power, the Bush gang and all "Republicans" will be extremely vulnerable. At the very least, he should be relieved of his Secret Service protection. He can have all the security he wants at his pig farm in Texas. He just should pay for it himself.
It will be good to keep in mind that getting this regime out of office will be a great accomplishment in itself, overcoming an entireley criminal effort to prevent a "Democratic" victory. I wouldn't put too much energy into war or other crimes trials until this regime is out of office.
Do you really want tanks in the streets? I know I know it SOUNDS fun, but trust me it's not.
It'll never happen. naturally he will SAY he will, but its all lip service. It'll never happen. Corruption is Bliss.

Some have commented that a truth commission may work. I don't think so. For politicians to tell the truth, they have to have immunity from prosecution (=pardon) which will happen anyway, but the motivation to tell the truth when given immunity is, in my opinion, only when that person knows his/her goose is cooked, and that is impossible without the truth, hence a catch 22. It only worked in South Africa because those were very special and exceptional circumstances where there were two equal visionaries who both wanted to avoid a bloodbath from an overwhelming majority of blacks.
That is why it would never work currently in Israel's apartheid with the Palestinians, where there is no equal footing and the Palestinians don't overwhelm the Israelis in numbers (yet).
Another point is the anticipated protracted position of the power enacted by Bush with an Obama presidency. We have now a clear demonstration of the one fatal flaw of a democracy, namely that power tends to corrupt and absolute power corrupts absolutely. It is debatable that a better system of government would be what's called a "benevolent dictatorship", as in Singapore, where, I am told, there is no corruption.Just thinking aloud.
“I would not want my first term consumed by what was perceived on the part of the Republicans as a partisan witch hunt …”

Everyone, please. Slow down, take a deep breath. Now read that quote again slooowly, word by word. If you think you didn’t quite get it the first time, read it again reeeeal slow-like. Is it sinking in? A Presidential candidate actually said that? Not just any Presidential Candidate; No, no, no, a “Constitutional Professor, Harvard Law review Editor, nocturnal wet dream of a certain female NYT op-ed scribbler, and magical mid-wife of ching-chong-Change!….Presidential Candidate, said that.
O.k…o.k. I think I got it now. Since we Americans can’t seem to get enough of reality t.v. I think we’re all unwitting dupes in the greatest Candid Camera skit of all time.
Now follow me here; In 1992, we elect a Democratic President who the Republicans vow to destroy even before he’s told where the Oval Office men’s room is. Without a single R vote he manages to turn massive deficits into massive surpluses, creates 22 million new jobs, and under his leadership Global peace and prosperity break out. Ahh, but after having found the elusive men’s room, he lets a young lady give his pee-pee a peck‘r two. That’s it!! Stop the Government! The people’s business pales in comparison to this crime against Jerry Falwell, Newt Gingrich, Moms Mabley, and the entire civilized world. Three special prosecutors, hundreds of FBI agents, and the entire right wing industrial apparatus worked 24/7 to rid us of this tyrant.
O.k. so now I get it. Those are the rules, and dammit it, we’re a country of rules.
So a short few years later, George (the dolt) Bush stumbles into the White House. Now what he and his merry band of burglars did to our country and the constitution reminds me of the days I lived at 176th. And Jerome Ave. in the Bronx. If a car broke down and the driver went looking for a phone booth (a primitive instrument before cell phones) by the time he came back (about 10 mins.) what was left of his sleek new car was four cinder blocks and a couple of rusty brake drums.
But time marches on and nothing stays the same. And “the rules?” Well they got tweaked a little bit; So now, when the good guys catch the bad guys committing a crime in broad daylight we must ask the bad guys how they “perceive” the situation. Will they be upset? Will we be hurting their self esteem? I know, let’s ask them, and if they say, “don’t you have anything better to do?” we’ll just look our citizens right in the eyes and say, “see, we did all we could, what more could you want?“
Now please pass the poupon.
