The bizarre trial of bin Laden's bodyguard

The "capture videos" the Pentagon aims to bury, late-night brutality pointing to the CIA -- and even a surreal viewing of "The Dark Knight" here in Guantánamo.

A rare voice of reason on The Dark Knight...

A minor point in context of this article, I know, but thank you for not jumping on the 'Dark Knight endorses War On Terror' garbage that has been spinning around for the last two weeks. It's a nuanced, complicated movie.

Heck (spoilers)...

if any character comes off as Dick Cheney, it's Harvey Dent. Dent, the tragic villain, inexplicably goes on a rampage targeting every except the person responsible for his downfall, and then targets the family of his false enemies purely out of spite.

Thanks for your work, Julia

It is so distressing that the fundamental abuses of justice at Guantanamo and these hearings are treated in such a ho-hum manner by the American people and press. This was the first I heard that Hamdan's BOSS was released from Guantanamo (like almost everyone, I assumed his boss was bin Laden himself -- obviously THAT guy was even closer to OBL). And that stark question inviting hearsay; why hasn't that, and other questions like it, been widely reported? I think (hope?) the average person would see admitting these statements as "evidence" is fundamentally wrong.

A Proud Moment

America adopts the Soviet System of Law, then throws a picnic between the torture chamber and the kangaroo court building.

Have we lost our minds?

Massive insanity.

Reads like Russian show trials.

Thanks for your work, Julia - needed now more than ever.

We can change everything on election day. Can't wait for 2008? Its here and in three months Bush, Cheney, and the corruption that has plagued us for eight years will be over. I want to see Fox News the day after the election. That should be quite a sight. John McCain NOT!

Disgusting

These sham trials are absolutely disgusting. We used to condemn the Soviets for this type of stuff. We can't do that anymore. THANK YOU BUSH FOR EVERYTHING YOU'VE DONE FOR US. Thank you Democrats in Congress for going along with everything the Bush admininstration has asked for. Thank you Republicans for being brainless automatons that, do whatever Der Furher Bush asks you to. He couldn't of done it without all of your support. Proud to be an American, not anymore.

Welcome to our future?

Despite having read it many years ago, the trials in the USSR that Alexandr Solzhenitsyn describes in "The Gulag Archipelago" reminds me so much of these military commission trials.

What I fear I'm looking at is our future if we don't reign in government power to spy on us, only there will likely be even less adherence to what we consider acceptable courtroom procedure.

One Word:

In the grainy black and white film, the videos show Hamdan slumped on the floor, hooded and... in an attempt to avoid more abuse.

GestaPo

Every Damned Person Involved With Hamdan's Prosecution...

...is a FUCKING CRIMINAL.

And that goes double for the judge.

"Taxi to the Dark Side"

Everyone who hasn't seen this Oscar winning documentary should order it. It will be released on DVD in Sept.

It's about a totally innocent Afghan taxi driver who was mistakenly imprisoned and beaten to death at Bagram, mostly because he complained non-stop and the soldiers couldn't stand listening to him. Even our investigation called his death a homicide.

Kangaroo Court

This trial is ludicrous and a waste of time since we know how it's going to turn out in the end. The fact that it's being held by a military tribunal and before a jury of military personnel (and only six at that) implies bias at the outset. But silliest of all is that we're trying bin Laden's driver, making him out to be a dangerous homicidal zealot with a position of importance within al Qaeda. If this is the caliber of "terrorists" we've been torturing at Gitmo for the past 6 years, I think we should let them all go and stop this silly charade called the "war on terror."
