Exposing Bush's historic abuse of power Salon has uncovered new evidence of post-9/11 spying on Americans. Obtained documents point to a potential investigation of the White House that could rival Watergate.

  • What does "potential" mean?

    From the text:

So far, no lawmaker has openly endorsed a proposal for a new Church Committee-style investigation. ... The Democrats' reticence on such action ultimately may be rooted in congressional complicity with the Bush administration's intelligence policies. ... Some see a brighter prospect in Barack Obama, should he be elected. ... But even that may be a lofty hope. "It may be the last thing a new president would want to do," said a participant in the ongoing discussions.

You say it yourselves. Democrats were complicit. There is potential for an investigation here about like there is potential for Obama to keep his word on FISA or potential for Dubya to be remembered by history as our greatest president. Ain't gonna happen.

I've woken up to a fact that has left me quite cynical and that fact is this: The current difference between Republicans and Democrats and their abuse of power in this age of "war on terror" is like the difference between the front and back sides of a dime. The faces are different, but it's still the same coin.

There will be no investigation. If any chance of one pops up, look for the post-partisan unity shtick of the Obama folks to shove it right back in the box just the way Bill Clinton did with the first Bush admin scandals (What? Everyone forgotten already?) back in 1993. We'd have more chance of a full investigation with McCain in the White House and Dems in control of congress...but not much more. I'd say the odds go from about the Obama-FISA/Dubya-greatest president class to the class of a foot of snow in Miami. In July.

  • Like The Onion,

    only better:

    "Could rival Watergate"

    "Obtained documents"

    "Potential investigation"

  • Manipulation of public opnion is a greater scandal

Everything reported in this article is a scandal and needs to be corrected under the next administration. And perhaps some need to be brought to trial.

But all these abuses and illegal acts would not have been possible without the massive and perverse manipulation of public opinion after 9/11. After that fateful day, the current administration immediately started a well orchestrated campaign to create an atmosphere of fear. As Goering famously said at the Nuremberg trials "All you have to do is make people afraid and you can manipulate them at will." Nazi Propaganda Minister Goebbels couldn't have done a better job. Only the well orchestrated fear atmosphere caused the American people to accept the indignities when traveling, caused most dissent to disappear, and essentially forced Congress to vote for everything Bush needed to invade Iraq. Few had the courage to resist and most who did were duly punished either by the voter or by the Government.

  • a little worried, maybe?

Happy to read that a congressional staffer (maybe even a congressman or two?) has figured out that we are only aware of the "tip of the iceberg" regarding the crimes of the bush/cheney junta.

Isn't anybody else a little worried about what they might do to avoid being held accountable, either thru the venue mentioned or the World Court?

Are you ready for the next war?

  • Planning to plan

Rumors and murmers about "Watergate-like" investigations of BushCo's criminal regime sometime in the future are all feel-good stuff for those of us lusting for a correction to the meteoric speed of the approaching police state. But feel-good is about it. I'm not too old to have fantasies, but the thought of any new administration allowing a genuine and thorough investigation of what has happened in the name of national security over the past eight years really doesn't pass the laugh test.

As has been pointed out, both parties are involved in the systematic destruction of the Constitution we have witnessed, and neither one wants more than a token expose of all the super-secret stuff going on in our newly minted surveilence state. I thought the fascist eagle with its talons dug into the map of the country superimposed on the images of the criminals in the White House is quite apt, but democracy such as it once was in this country is now gone. Obama can't, and won't try too hard to restore it. McSame needs his meds. Congress can't get off the dime because they're so complicit and also compromised by money. So where is this all-too-necessary correction going to come from? The ACLU?

Let's see how the pardon game is played. It could cut both ways.

  • It's off the table

Nancy Pelosi, when she became the Speaker of the House, stated that "impeachment" was "off the table". It was the first inkling I had that it didn't matter who we voted it......they're all either criminals, or criminally enabling.

  • Dems will privately say...

"What, you expect me to do somethin' about that?"

They will not do a thing either today, tomorrow, or next year about anything this administration has done. They are complicate. See how they just bent way over backwards to pass the atrocious FISA fix? That says it all. Please, get over that pie in the sky fantasy of the Dems doing anything. Their real job is taking payments from their corporate masters and pretending to do something worthwhile for the country.

(DHS, please don't forget to add this post to my secret file.)

  • Ok, I'm a long-term fan of Salon, BUT

this is unintentionally hilarious, or a really clever put-on. Remember "Fitz-mas," when Cheney was going to be taken down over the Plame affair? Remember that....never happened?

Remember the big Democratic mid-term "revolution" that was going to deny Bush all his crazy anti-constitutional schemes? Never happened. In fact, all those Democrats used the opportunity to present their asses to the the Bush administration to be kicked. Then, they pulled down their collective pants and said 'Please sir, can I have some more." Sorriest bunch of weak-willed, cowardly asstards ever collected in one place. It's embarrassing to be a Democrat these days.

"Rival Watergate" my ass - sorry lads, there ain't no Barbara Jordan in Congress today. This will die a quiet death, and Americans will continue to sit in their air-conditioned rooms and watch their TV and read their internet and cluck over the terribleness of it all, and do nothing.

  • Maybe Pelosi's office planted this story?

Isn't the bottomline here a plea for those Americans who still want an accounting to vote for Democrats--even for those same Democrats are complicit in the spying and the gutting of the Fourth Amendment?
