Who understands almost nothing about Sunni and Shi'ite Muslims, but that division has been part of Iraq's history for centuries. Incurious George didn't care, and still doesn't. I'm not sure John McCain knows--or cares, either. This ignorance and disinterest in the country Bush insisted on invading and bombing five years ago has lead to a huge mess. Solving that mess is going to mainly be the next president's headache. Seems to me that having a president with some greater, or even a basic undersanding of Islam in the 21st century is not the worst idea I've ever heard.
I don't think Obama is a Muslim, especially not in the sense of "He's a muslim Manchurian candidate who is controlled by our enemies who will destroy us all!" I believe he is a Christian, but my reasons for supporting him are for the most part NOT based on either his religion or mine. I believe in the separation of church and state, and after seven years spent with a president who's eager to push his great piety into everyone's face, and even, terrifyingly, let his public policies be guided by it, I'm hoping Obama's going to run a somewhat more secular and sensible White House.
Yes, I know, he hasn't won the election, yet. I say Obama in this context because I KNOW John McCain woouldn't run either a secular or a sensible administration.
