Barack Obama's epic win

The young senator makes history not only in terms of race, while a determined Hillary Clinton delays the inevitable a bit longer.

The letters thread is now closed.

Hey, micro,

I loved the woodchipper analogy.

You're right - there is no substantive engagement to be had with the likes if Indigo. I just wonder what s/he thinks s/he is accomplishing here. I've been fighting the urge to ignore this fool all day, but some of Indigo's posts are just too ridiculous to leave alone.

@ Scott A Martin

You wrote:

"You might want to rethink your historical comparison there. The reason that Lieberman succeeded as an independent was because the Republicans broke in large numbers to support his candidacy over the stuffed-shirt that their own party was running. Any national third-party/independent candidate can ONLY succeed by drawing significant numbers away from both usually-Democratic and usually-Republican voters, AND capturing a large number of independents. There's virtually no way that Clinton could achieve this. No significant number of core Republicans will support her candidacy over McCain's. All she would achieve would be to siphon away Democratic voters who might otherwise be persuaded to vote for Obama, and therefore hand the presidency to McCain on a silver platter. Fortunately, I think Clinton is smart enough to realize this, although I fear that a good number of her supporters might choose to ignore the potential ramifications and call for an independent candidacy anyway."

I apologize if I left any impression that I believe that Hillary can win the Presidential election if she runs as an Independent. I said she could do it, just as Lieberman did it, but the "comparison" ends there because I do not believe she could win. Just as you say, she would probably take votes away from Obama, which might reduce his chance of winning (although I do not believe that amounts to "handing the Presidency to McCain on a silver platter").

On the other hand, many of Hillary's supporters say they will vote for McCain instead of Obama or not vote at all if Hillary is not on the ballot, so those votes are lost to Obama, anyway. I wouldn't be surprised if some of them changed their minds between now and November, but I am not about to question their sincerity.

It would be extremely self-centered and narcissistic of me to make the argument that Hillary should not continue running for President because I don't want her to run. It doesn't matter what my reasons might be (she'll split the vote, she'll continue to smear Obama and hurt his chances of winning, I don't think she's the best candidate for President, etc., etc.). I will repeat what I said earlier: if she believes she can win, then she should continue running for President, no matter what I think.

@karenn

In your mind, anybody who has a real job, who actually uses her law degree is evil. When Bill and Hillary arrived in Washington in 1992, they weren't millionaires like the Obamas.

----------------------

My point is Obama chose to work closely with the people when he could have been on his way to being a millionaire. Only after 2 best selling books did he get money so please save it. Only person who said anything about evil is you.

Dont assume to know my mind, because when you assume....well you should know the rest

The Women For Fair Politics Website!

Loyal Hillary Supporters,

We have been asked to post a new petition by Lanny Davis, an old friend of Hillary and Bill Clintons. Each one of us will have to make the painful decision accepting Senator Obama's nomination or asking Hillary to fight on to the convention! He feels out of respect of her 17,000,000 million voters that she at least deserves the VP slot on the ballot. Mr. Davis would like all of you to sign his petition to ask Senator Obama to place Hillary in nomination for VP. Although we are not endorsing this idea, we respect his opinion as a dear friend of the Clintons for over 40 years.

Hillary Clinton delaying the inevitable

I think the whole expression "delaying the inevitable" is obnoxious. It reminds me of how self-righteous and arrogant Salon's editors have become. Have you no shame in writing such

blatant propaganda? Leave the woman alone. She lost a campaign that she should have won to a guy who brings nothing to the table.

NO to VP for Hillary

Let him prove his talk that he's a unifier. Hillary doesn't need him.

She just has to wait till Obama self-destructs... Rezko today, MO's tape next.

With the insane disrespect she's been getting and is still getting, why bother to be a 2nd fiddle to a rookie so that he can fulfill his ambition?

I'm curious..

Why did you bother using Obamas name in the headline? The article was almost entirely about Hillary and her martyrdom at the hands of the swarthy Obama.

The strategy of Obamas campaign was brilliant. It fit the geography of primary perfectly. It is clear Clinton didn't figure out what hit them until it was too late. Even with a masterful plan and execution it ended very close. I think we are getting a great president that will pair up nicely with a democratic congress.

About "presidential dreamers"

Every other presidential dreamer in her position had taken the fight to the convention (Ronald Reagan in 1976, Ted Kennedy in 1980, Gary Hart in 1984), but she has been demonized for hanging on until the first Tuesday in June.

It's worth noting that in each of those cases when a challenger took the fight to the convention, the party in question lost the general election. Let's hope that the report that Hillary will concede on Friday is accurate.

Time to retire the HUBRIS !

As someone who had considerable admiration for Bill's electoral accomplishments (& thus Hillary), it is sad that gradually I have have to replace that admiration with a rational assessment that is not entirely favorable.

*******************************************

Hillary's Unceasing Bravado Reinforcing Intrinsic Superiority = HUBRIS

*******************************************

And we have all been treated to a feast of HUBRIS for the last 8 years, if not the last century!

This is a historic juncture as we (as a nation) realize that HUBRIS will not cut it any more - nationally or in the international stage! Time to grow up ....

*******************************************

And of course, you cannot spell HUBRIS without BUSH as well.
