Barack Obama's epic win The young senator makes history not only in terms of race, while a determined Hillary Clinton delays the inevitable a bit longer.

  • It is not over until they vote

The vote on who is the candidate does not take place until the convention. The super delegates can switch their minds until then. All Clinton has to do is bribe/threaten/AIPAC 100 supers (out of 800?) and she is the candidate.

I hope it is Obama at least he will end torture and close Gitmo. But how will he balance the budget? End the trade deficit? Stop spending social security money on other things?

  • Obama just finished speaking.

In the words of the BBC, he's set out his 'credentials' as a defender of Israel/pro-Israeli.

Next up Hillary, but I couldn't be bothered. More of the same.

  • @sirphred

As Grandpa McCoy used to say, "Showin' is better 'n' tellin'."

Please give the citation and exact quote where Obama said that Clinton supporters would back him but his supporters wouldn't back her. I've heard this from Hillary supporters, but I've also heard a lot of other strange claims that end up not being true.

  • @Bob in Pacifica

Yes, many of us have been in these kind of relationships. But the thing is, Clinton and her supporters can only pull off this blackmail if Obama and his supporters (I'm among them) truly believe there's something they can do to "make it better."

After months and months of Clinton supporters threatening to vote for McCain, I just don't care anymore. If these people are so aggrieved that their candidate lost the election fair and square that they're going to abandon the party, there's nothing Obama can do to win them back. Let them go.

Besides, Obama is leading McCain in national polls without their support.

  • Can't exactly say

Obama's speech on Israel inspired much confidence.

  • Dang, Taliesan

Stop arguing it already -- are all lawyers so obtuse? Tax rate, tax rate, tax rate!!! 33% tax versus 25% tax, get it? Why should I have to pay 33%? Because it's "progressive"? Jeez. I had this argument with someone else on another thread. Income taxation should NOT be used for wealth redistribution. It is complicated, it is messy and it is waaaay open to abuse and political corruption. Taxes should be used for current expenses only! Full stop! Government-sponsored Social Welfare projects should be kept separate, with separate funding programs! But this is not the thread for that argument, so let's drop it. Jeez.

  • You said it

By almost every reckoning (pledged delegates won, popular vote in the primaries), this has been an extraordinarily close contest, even though, as Clinton rightfully noted, "the pundits and the naysayers proclaimed week after week that this race was over." Make no mistake, there has been a snarky tenor of criticism about Clinton's determination to stay the course through all the primaries. Every other presidential dreamer in her position had taken the fight to the convention (Ronald Reagan in 1976, Ted Kennedy in 1980, Gary Hart in 1984), but she has been demonized for hanging on until the first Tuesday in June.

    Exactly.

I don't want to see her take it to the convention, but good for her for seeing it to the end of the primaries. She may be demonized (she's used to it, I'm sure, since it's been going on for years), but she has put a big crack in that glass ceiling for the woman who eventually wins it. Thank you Hillary.

    Now go Obama!

Whether you pay 25% tax or 45% tax, if you pay more than you owe on your taxable income, you can get a refund.

You don't get a refund simply because you are in a lower tax bracket.

  • Time to move on

Last night was an exciting evening for Obama volunteers and supporters. Obama gave a great uniting speech, and much praise to Hillary and once again she disappointed everyone. Not once did she congratulate Obama or recognize his achievements. Instead she continues with her bull and new math. He speech was all about me,me,and me. To her question "What does Hillary want"? I say "who care!" Hillary is just trying to keep the spot light off of Obama and on herself, buy keeping the public curious about her next move.

While pundits keep saying Obama needs to reach out to her and her supporters, I believe the opposite is true. I think Hillary & her supporters needs to reach out to Obama, and put aside their anger. Obama called Hillary to reach out, now he should ignore her until she concedes. Let Hillary call you Obama. It is Obama who has the power to call the shots, not Hillary.

HIllary is a good politician, but as a supporter of Obama the last ting I want to see is Hillary as on the ticket as VP. I do not agree she would be an asset, I think she has too much baggage...mostly Bill.

Democrats have a chance to won this election now and we need to unite behind Obama and move on. Hillary needs to step out of the spot light.

  • Taliesan, please

    Stop.being.obtuse.

  • Democratic Party, R.I.P.

He's a good man and might have been a great president.

He's also the Swiftboaters' dream come true.

  • Who Cares about Shapiro, I want to read Joan's next rant.

This article is okay, but I'm wondering when Joan Walsh is going to post something.

I mean, you know it is going to be epic, contorted and will either prove what her critics have been saying or defy expectations by being concilatory.

My bet is on the usual fake objectivity with ill concealed deep resentment, maybe even a suggestion McCain should win.

Come on Joan now is your time to shine. You can either rebalance salon or trash it more. Let's roll!

  • @trishct

Where is Joan Walsh? She's working on her next column which will list all the things that Obama must do to earn the "respect" of "Hillary's supporters." It'll be a long column because she'll list all the slights that he and the world have visited upon Hillary. She'll also explain how if you look at the numbers correctly you'll see that Clinton actually won. I'm sure that some of the time between now and publication will be spent on her choosing the correct photo of a smiling Hillary to include with the essay. She may even hint about holding out until it's proven that Barack and Farrakhan have a lovechild and that it's only a matter of time before his gay crack-smoking pedophile past is revealed on the road to Denver. Or something. It's always something.
