"No wonder they hate us, I hate us!" So wrote "widget" in a previous letter.
That says it all, folks! Like the chicken and the egg, I wonder which came first with "widget"--and others who posted: the self-loathing for our country or the chagrin over GITMO?
It's become a sad state in our nation's affairs when terrorist suspects receive more empathy than American soldiers trying to do their jobs under extremely adverse conditions. No other letter writer mentioned the mental and verbal abuse or the feces and urine hurled at our people at GITMO by these terrorist prisoners whose treatment, including medical treatment, the freedom to perform their religious observances five times daily, and the three square meals they get daily, is in many cases far better than they're accustomed to. No one witnessed the resistance this obviously-recalcitrant prisoner put up.
I think Ms. Chodroff approached this story with the same mindset exemplified by "widget," that is with an antipathy toward the United States and its armed forces.
On Memorial Day weekend, when we honor those who fought and died for us, it's a shame SALON chose to feature this story rather than one extolling our troops.
May God bless and save America!
