Hillary Clinton will likely win big here Tuesday. But could the primary vote in this former Democratic bastion be a clue to Obama's performance in November?

  • Those West Virginia Democrats and my dog

My dog was once kicked by a man who hates dogs. He never goes near that man again and whenever he sees that creep, his hatred for him is obvious, and he would no doubt go after him if I let him off leash. My dog is so much smarter than the West Virginia white trash who have been screwed by the various Republican presidents over and over and over again, but will always vote for a Republican for president, especially if the Democrat is African-American. Frankly, no demographics deserve to be screwed by the GOP more than the white trash who elect them.

  • Chances are

Obama's chances of winning WV are about as good as his chances of becoming President....

Note to Democrats, pride cometh before a fall--I would buy a LOT of insurance.....

  • Hillary Pours Gasoline on a Fire of Bigotry

Happily Hillary Clinton is not our candidate. She and Bill will be at the inauguration, but in the audience. In this she is so deserving.

As a 65 year-old today and growing up 20 miles from Morgantown, WVA, I saw bigotry and never liked it. Not all of West Virginia carries this prejudice toward blacks.

By playing the "white like me" card she shows us who she is.

  • They are not racist

I once drove through a southern state on a cross country drive and got into a conversation with a white man in a gas station while my car was being repaired. I asked him if he could ever vote for a black candidate for president. His answer:" I'm not a racist, but I would never vote for a n....r."

The fact that Clinton claims she should be the nominee because of her appeal to that particular dempgraphics should be her main disqualification, although she has many.

  • @drinkwater

"But I don't think that because Madden quoted a man who was making racist statements, that that makes this a bad article."

I agree, and I've seen the reasoning you spread out in response to my post before. You make some valid and well thought out points, but I totally disagree. My feeling is, for the reasons you describe, this nation seems to finally be moving on from the awful divisive politics of past campaigns. We, it seems as a nation are finally fed up enough to vote beyond race or gender or religion. For the most part that is. I know we still have racist lunkheads roaming the country with their oh so brilliant views on the world, which as far as I can surmise can be summed up as, "I liked it when we had separate water fountains."

Here's where you and I really part ways though. I know that there is a feeling that we lose elections because we don't reach out to these knuckle draggers. So you tell me- how do we reach out to them without losing our soul? I'd like to know the answer. See, the Karl Rove's of the world have answered that question, and they're fine with it.

I happen to feel that these unfortunate backwards thinking folk are finally disappearing from any real presence on the political scene. So ya know...fuck em. Anyone who can say in all good conscience something like-"The arrogance and all that bothers me more than black, but black is a close second," he said. "Our generation was back when blacks were the back of the bus, and it's hard to change that outlook. I just feel like I couldn't vote for him," deserves a swift kick in the ass, not my understanding. What do you really think yo ahve to say that is going to breach the divide anyway?

As we get older as a nation, we are losing our whiteness as a power structure. Slowly, to be sure, but it is definitely happening. So, I don't wish to reach out to them. You can, and good luck with that, but I think that we can finally win an election without that all important racist prick vote this go round. I may be wrong, but I'll take my chances. I guess we'll see.

  • @proudtexasgirl

Note to Democrats, pride cometh before a fall--I would buy a LOT of insurance.....

    Love your optimism.

  • proudtexasgirl

How do you buy a LOT of insurance?

  • WV is racist this week...

...and KY will be racist next week. That explains it all. Of course.

  • nope

and he won't win Ohio either. Good luck, suckers.

  • @weeping for brunnhilde

I am with you on trying to come up with a more subtle and effective way of discussing race, but I don't think this article in anyway furthers a better understanding of race. In fact it only furthers the view that race can be discussed by saying..."look he is a clan member or hates blacks I understand how race operates what the problem is and what the solution is.".

This article has enough red meat in it fan the flames of passion, self righteousness and nastiness of supporters on each side. I really don't see how this is any different than the cable TV shows that pander to base instincts and interests for the sake of stirring up the pot to garner ratings and further personal career goals.

  • Oh Rose

Your argument is absurd...but while we're playing silly games here - why not check this out?

    http://progressillinois.com/2008/05/11/features/obama-over-the-top

One point just pops out at ya don't it?

"Poblano’s simulation engine has produced some fascinating results. According to his current data, the model predicts that Clinton would win four states against McCain that Obama is favored to lose (FL, AR, WV, OH). Meanwhile, Obama wins eight states where Clinton would likely fail (MI, WI, IA, CO, NM, NV, WA, OR)."

but again...all this prognosticatin' is academic at this point. Unless of course you're The Amazing Kreskin. You aren't really The Amazing Kreskin are you??

  • Given that West Virgina borders Ohio, Pennsylvania & Virginia

Does it provide any sort clue as to how those those states will vote, or at least, the parts of those states that border West Virginia?

  • The great unifier...

    ...has become the great polarizer.

Obama is basically following the same trajectory as the other great unifier, GWB. Except he has found new things to polarize around and do it much faster.

    Black vs white

    Black vs non-blacks

    Youth vs Age

    more educated vs less-educated

the alot Religious vs the little religious

    Men vs women

    urban vs rural

    enlightened ones vs the uninitiated

    blue collar vs white collar

Did I miss any other group he is unifying? Sounds like if he gets elected, Obamas first priority will be to install a caste system to keep all these speperate groups in their proper place.
