Hillary enters death-with-dignity phase If she hasn't already quit, it's hard to envision Clinton continuing her unwinnable -- even with Florida and Michigan -- battle beyond June 4.

  • OT Atlantic Magazine This Month

Has an nice article about the fundraising team Obama put together and how it all came to be.

I'm not sure its on their website but the article was really good.

  • HIllary voters

The majority of Hillary voters will vote for Obama. Women who care abut reproductive choice will vote for Obama. He is actually better on that issue than Hillary. Any working class person who votes for McCain will be voting against their own best interest. A vindictive vote is so stupid. I suspect the only Hillary voters who may not vote for Obama are the racists.

Unit behind Obama for a BIG win in November.

  • @ -- libertyson

    Fascinating post.

Since Obama and his team have done such a good job up until now, there's every reason to think that they will figure out a way to deal with this. But it's good to know what's happening, so that as you say, we take nothing for granted.

If it's OK with you, I'd like to post your letter on other sites, HuffPo, TPM, etc.

  • Estes Kefauver

He's still in it! Not too late he's a fighter! I won't support anyone else! In it to win it!

  • Senator Clinton

When a candidate, as Senator Clinton, is ahead in the National Polls to beat John McCain, to which part of "downslide" are you referring, Mr. Shapiro?

  • Say No to sidney

Please don't re-hire sidney blumenthal when billary folds.

  • I Feel The Same

    ProudTexasGirl: I started to type a post but you said it all for me.I feel the same as you do;

    Thank You

  • @MikeKC, the letter could have been deleted by mistake

it happens sometimes. i've had letters deleted (by Joan walsh and Glenn greenwald) but NEVER without an acknowledgement that they were doing so and why. they don't like doing it. but since deletions CAN happen, they DO, and if they DO, sometimes it's by error. send it again.

i read handlebar's article too, baby_boomerang and i also liked it, but it's BIG (4 pages) so i'll summarize it in three sentences for those who aren't going to read it.
Charles P. Pierce (who must be catholic) takes the persona of "cynic" who wishes to become convinced that obama can "bring america back". The best line (and one he himself liked so much he used three times) was "He was offering absolution without confession, without penance.", (see what i mean by catholic?). Then he says, at the very end, "Convince me. Convince me. Convince me.", (but before the cock crows?).

  • Role Reversal

If Hillary and Obama's primary votes and delegate counts were reversed, I have a feeling that the cries from her supporters for Obama to get out of the race to save the party would be pretty loud...

  • How to help Hillary with her money troubles, without pissing off all the partisans

You read in all the postings a great deal of venom and feeling that Barack Obama would have to abandon his 'new ways of thinking' to rescue the old-style pol and pay for the slash and burn tactics of (and huge bills owed to) Mark Penn).

What might go a long way to promote unity and to help with the campaign debts, would be for Barack and Hillary to do a 20 state tour of joint appearances with both candidates' loyalists paying to get in. Hillary vows her love for the nominee, they get the warring factors to sing Kumbaya together, and they split the purse. I suggest focusing on the states where Hillary's strength is pronounced.

This could make the grudges on both sides go away a little, boost the war chest for Obama in the pre-convention period, and retire Hillary's debt and loans.

  • OT FYI Michigan and Obama

    http://www.mlive.com/news/index.ssf/2008/05/barack_obama_stops_in_michigan.html

    Making a stop there Wednesday.

This is really smart because after Tuesday it will sap some media attention from Hillary's big WV win AND demonstrate to supers that he's willing and ready to work hard to mend establish relationship with voters in that state, regardless of how the May 31st meeting goes.

You have to love organization like this!

  • For those of you convinced that the Supreme Court is the issue...

...and who seem to think that the results of the last 10 presidential elections are meaningless:

Take a look at the Los Angeles Times/Bloomberg Poll conducted May 1-8, 2008. http://www.pollingreport.com/prioriti.htm.

Notice that the economy & Iraq are far and away the most important issues. But keep telling yourself that Obama will ride the Supreme Court all the way to the Presidency.

  • Green Job anyone can argue about what other people care about

but do YOU personally care about the Supreme Court justices? Another article I read today talks about the court appointees (not even necessarily at Supreme Court level)that Reagan set up years ago still having an impact on environmental regulations etc. today.

And the Democratic promise to withdraw troops from Iraq? (As opposed to McCain's promise that to withdraw from Iraq allows dishonor, and al quaeda "wins"?)

    Just wondering.

  • Green Job = concern troll?

Hi Green Job, I think it is pretty obvious that people are arguing that the Supreme Court is one of the most important things that the president will do in the next few years. Not that that is the number one issue with voters. We’re a bunch of political junkies arguing about the election and talking about issues of paramount importance not popularity.

But I think you know that and are trying out some concern trolling. Better than the vitriol from the rethug trolls here who insist they will vote for McCain to spite the country.

The other thing- you also seem very worried about fairness between New Hampshire, Michigan and Florida. There’s no real equivalency here. New Hampshire already first in the nation status was protected. They moved it back because other primaries were encroaching on their date. MI and FL were told in no-uncertain-terms that they would be punished. I personally love the idea of taking away their superdelegates and leaving the committed delegates from the vote in some proportion.

However, there is no sense in comparing this primary to the republican – the parties get to make up their own rules about how they determine their nominee. There is nothing in the constitution about this and technically no one can be disenfranchised from the primary. But the parties want to attract and keep members, be seen as fair or people will walk away from their parties (which is happening in large numbers anyway.) If we wanted to and everyone agreed on it we could pull a name out of a hat or put golden tickets in candy packages to determine our nominee.

FWIW the democratic party system in the primary is proportional since that best reflects the values of the party and its members. The republicans do winner take all that comports with their black/white good/evil world view and I think the libertarians do a raffle with the serial numbers from their riffles.
